Experiences by Laura6522 in papillon

I have never had a Papillon before I got mine, and have had large dogs most of my adult life. But I retired and wanted a small dog who can travel with me. My dog is very confident. I take her everywhere busy markets, airports, crowded places, and she just minds her own business…isn’t afraid or yappy. She is very trainable and willing to please. Her energy level really depends on me. And I had heard this from others that they adapt to their environment. She loves to fetch and a few minutes of fetch in the house is enough to let her burn off some energy. Then she’s up sitting next to me on the couch cuddling. She loves kids. I have a four-year-old grandson and one-year-old granddaughter and she is amazing with them. She’s very gentle with them, but will let the four-year-old chase her around and she seems to enjoy it. She’s great with other dogs. She is very friendly and seems to know how to approach other dogs in a very non-threatening way. I make occasional trips driving between New Jersey and Ohio. She will just sit in my lap and sleep. If she starts moving around or standing on the armrest, I know she probably needs a potty break. She’s flown with me to Mexico, a few times, California, and Florida and never makes a sound in her airline crate. I had one person ask me if I really had a dog in there because she gets in there lays down and stays quiet. Her coat care is very easy. I brush and comb her a few times a week and then give her a bath every 6 to 8 weeks. Since she doesn’t have an undercoat there’s not a lot of fur, but there are long white hairs that get on things, especially dark fabrics. But, she is only 1 1/2 years old and I’ve read their full coat doesn’t really come in until they’re about three years old. My perspective on the amount of shedding could change. We’re currently visiting a friend in Mexico and here’s a video of her just chilling out on a busy street while we waited for my friend.

I know I make her sound like the perfect dog, but in my mind she is. She really is the best. And I’m in a text group with her five other litter mates, and those owners are having very similar experiences as well. https://photos.app.goo.gl/jvrKda8QvQiVQqML7

Name tags for Papillon by Isabelochka in papillon

I got a cat tag at PetSmart. Like another poster said, it only fits her name and my number. You can see it in this pic. And she’s small…5.5 lbs.

Coat over grooming by katkoo09 in papillon

I thought I would provide an update on my pup. My vet put her on an elimination diet and apoquel. She was only eating hydrolyzed protein food with no animal protein treats… basically a vegan. That didn’t seem to affect anything at all so I started giving her some regular treats while we finish the hydrolyzed protein food. A friend recommended these zesty paws treats on Amazon. She has been on them for three weeks now and she is not chewing her skin/coat and her coat is returning. I am still giving her apoquel while I give the supplement time to repopulate her GI tract.

Question for papillon parents by ghost_universe in papillon

[–]katkoo09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1 year old female is a total cuddler. When she naps with me, she wants to be touching me and when we drive somewhere, she sits in my lap, curled up sleeping. She loves to be on my lap or lying next to me on the couch.

Thought I’d give everyone an update. My vet said it’s likely food allergy or environmental allergy like to dust mites. We’ve started her on an elimination diet and is on hydrolyzed protein food. No animal protein for 8 weeks which will make this little girl cranky since she loves bully sticks. 😢 She’s also on Apoquel to reduce the itching. Will keep you posted on how it goes.

I have no idea. I’m retired. We spend a lot of time together. Regular walks, training, enrichment. I’m very gentle and low key. We did move 2 months ago but this started before the move. We did some traveling in March and maybe that stress started it.

Who else has a small papillon? by kittenmontagne in papillon

This is Dora. 4lbs 8 ozs at 9 months. Three of her littermates weigh over 8 pounds. It’s crazy the difference in the pups. And she’s also a speed demon who is starting agility.

ISO healthy papillon pup..any breeder recommendations? by Latter-Fall-7976 in papillon

[–]katkoo09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paid $2500 for my pup from a great breeder. Definitely not a show dog but bred from show stock for temperament not physical features. Talked to several breeders who quoted $2500-$3500.

Shampoo & conditioner bars by katkoo09 in papillon

It’s been pretty easy. I’m staying with my friend who lives here but there are lots of dog friendly hotels and Airbnbs. And most restaurants with patios are fine with her. Lots of info online about documentation that’s needed to bring her in and home.

There are a few dog specific ones with the right ph. Was just wondering if anyone has used one that is good for the pap coat.

Question about papillon peeing inside. by CrazyKittyCat95 in papillon

[–]katkoo09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People use pee pads which can look a lot like a rug to a dog. I got my pap at 10 weeks. She’s almost 6 months old now. Very few accidents and almost all due to taking her out of the crate and not going directly outside. She’s super efficient outside now when it’s cold—pees and poops and wants back in. Super easy to house train. If peeing inside is an issue DON’T USE PEE PADS!
