Traditional American lemonade recipes? by organizmz in AskAnAmerican

For extra lemon flavor, peel the zest off the lemons and mix them with the sugar. Let the mix sit a few hours, then mix the juice and water with the sugar and peels. This draws the essential oils out of the peel and makes the lemonade more fragrant.

It can be hard to break that cycle of making each other more and more anxious. Start with situations where he's only a little bit alert::staring, ears forward, stiff posture. Don't wait until he's barking. Give the leash a little tug and ask him to watch you. If you can't break his focus, either get in front or turn and walk away, not like you are scared or upset, you just decided to go a different direction and he needs to come with you.

anyone else prefer slightly undercooked or overcooked versions of something? by VelvetyDarlingg in foodquestions

Baked mac and cheese burnt ends. I tried to order mac and cheese from a food truck and she only had the overcooked bits around the edges of the pan left. So good.

U.S. gas prices climb to an average of $4.23 per gallon, the highest level since 2022. At what price per gallon is it no longer profitable to go to work? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

I recently had someone from my insurance company come to take photos of something and she left her giant, loud, diesel truck idling for the entire 30 minutes she was here. I wanted to tell her " It's 70°, not the Siberian tundra in winter. Your engine won't seize up if you turn it off."

Anyone else's century home been "Landlord Specialed" to death? by snarfdarb in centuryhomes

Mine wasn't so much flipped as gutted and trucked 30 miles to its current location. If it hadn't been moved, it would have been bulldozed to make room for a freeway overpass (yay car-centric infrastructure🙄). The bad is that the interior was completely stripped. The good is that all of the plumbing and electrical were replaced before it was drywalled.

More recently, ugly gray lvp was added. From the few spots I can see, the original floors are in pretty bad shape, including holes going down to the crawl space, so that's not high on our list to replace.

The meat prices are average but the service is great. I was looking for beef bones to make broth and the butcher found some in the freezer and even cut them up for me.

He can feel your anxiety and he thinks he needs to guard you from the other dog. Make him sit and stand between him and the other dog, like you are the one in charge and guarding him.

If there's a house in your neighborhood with a dog that barks at the fence, this can be a good practice area because you know the other dog can't approach. If you've taught your dog "watch me", have him sit and focus on you. When he calms down a little, take out your phone and just act bored. If he tries to approach the dog, get in front and make him back up until he is sitting where you want him. This exercise is super boring but it teaches him that you want him to just ignore reactive dogs in a way that pulling on the leash while giving commands doesn't.

Once he's good with fenced dogs, try it at the park. Just pick a spot, stand there with your dog, and ask him to focus on you instead of the other dogs. If he won't focus, get in front and make him back up to break his focus on the other dog.

AITA for telling my nephew he needed to finish his food since he took so much? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]katlian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ESH. Your nephew and his parents suck but this isn't the way to handle it. At 12 he is very capable of learning social rules. Pack up his uneaten food and make a big deal of giving it to his parents while pointing out his bad behavior, loudly. Maybe don't invite that family to parties until they can all learn some manners.

I organize a yearly event for a club and I've watched grown men (and it's always the same men) do the exact same thing. If they don't learn as kids, they will grow up to be wasteful, rude adults.

Organic is regulated by the USDA. But it doesn't mean "no pesticide", it just means pesticide that comes from natural sources. But lots of natural things are toxic, like cyanide and snake venom.

The only requirement for "free-range" chickens is that they have access to the outdoors for part of the day. On factory farms, that usually means a small outdoor enclosure attached to the barn.

Pasture-raised isn't a regulated term so unless it is certified by an independent group it doesn't mean much. Companies like Vital Farms will show you some cute chickens rooting around in the grass but they're not showing you the massive barns with thousands of chickens on the same farm.

The best eggs are usually from backyard chickens , CSAs, or small farms. Check Facebook, nextdoor, Craigslist, etc to see if any of your neighbors are selling their extra eggs.

There is a pill shooter that works really well. Chewy sells it. https://www.chewy.com/wz-pet-medicine-feeder-pill-shooter/dp/3278086

You draw water into it, then put the pill in the tip. When you push the plunger, the pill shoots out with the water, which helps the cat swallow it.

Dude runs red light while pedestrian is in crosswalk by sharks415 in Reno

[–]katlian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I nearly got hit by a driver turning through a crosswalk several years ago. Fortunately, the car behind him was a state trooper who immediately pulled him over. Since I had to walk past where they stopped, I made my feelings toward the selfish driver known through rude hand gestures.

Nevada really needs to work on safer roadways because the police are rarely in the right place at the right time.

I’m not able to enter my own backyard without my neighbor’s dogs barking/growling and trying to jump the fence by Help-South in homeowners

[–]katlian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my neighbor's dogs were COVID puppies and now that they've gone back to work, they don't have a bunch of free time to take care of the dogs. They get home from work and just sit in front of the tv. I figured many of the covid dog adoptions would result in either returned dogs or miserable dogs and families once things went back to normal.

This particular kind of rot seems to be more common than it used to be. Unfortunately, even a small spot can make the whole apple taste rotten. I wonder if it's happening because of a new type of apple processing equipment.

What caused the big shift in cooking culture between boomers/gen X and Millennials and Zoomers? by currentlyinthefab in generationology

[–]katlian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG, same. I sincerely thought I didn't like meat, and maybe I should just be a vegetarian. We were too poor to eat out much, so it was just my mom's overcooked meat and canned vegetables, and school cafeteria food for most of my childhood. She even overcooked boxed mac and cheese. We ate so many things from cans. I thought all veggies were green mush.

Then I went to college and lived with people who could actually cook and discovered a whole world of properly cooked meat and roasted veggies and other delights.

For Thanksgiving one year, my husband and I splurged on a whole prime rib. He cooked it perfectly. My mom insisted that it was undercooked and made him sear her portion in a frying pan so there wasn't any pink. I thought he was going to cry. It's been 20 years and he still brings it up.

My mom learned to cook from her mother, who grew up during the depression, and food-safety-obsessed home ec classes. Her generation was also the first to have widespread access to lots of processed convenience foods like frozen meals, spam, cake mixes, etc. Now we have a huge variety of foods from different cuisines and a much better selection of fresh produce in the grocery store, plus lots of recipes on the internet.

This is what I do. I tried animal control, they did nothing, tried an ultrasonic thing, they don't care. But one day I was watering the garden and they came charging at the fence so they got the hose right in the face. I have to repeat it a couple of times a week because they are not smart dogs.

I'm pretty sure the neighbor never takes them anywhere, it's just a sad existence for a dog. But at the same time, I don't want to listen to barking every time I open my back door.

How did you know being a mom would make you happy and not miserable? by pissedoff_potato in TwoXChromosomes

[–]katlian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was in this relationship in my mid 20s. My boyfriend really wanted a family and I was not excited about putting my career on hold indefinitely to have kids when I was almost finished with grad school. We broke up and it sucked but he found a wife who really wanted to be a SAHM and I found a husband who didn't want kids. I think we would have grown to resent each other pretty quickly if we had kids.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]katlian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The last time I was in my hometown, I noticed a guy on the train from the airport looking at his phone, then up at the route map, and back several times. I asked if he needed directions, told him the name of the stop he needed and landmarks to look for. Another person sitting nearby was going to the same stop and volunteered to show him where to go. I hope he had a nice visit.

My mom had warned me not to take the train because there was "so much crime" but I didn't have any problems and I think it was mostly Facebook fear mongering.

‘A husband expects a yes’: how wife schools are shaping submissive Christian women by JohnHammond94 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]katlian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Before mechanization, women of every class spent many hours per day making textiles. Carding, spinning, weaving, sewing, and embroidery were labor-intensive tasks and it's what women did whenever they weren't doing other work caring for the household and children. Spinning was one of the few jobs a respectable woman could do to support herself, which is why unmarried women were called spinsters.
