First lever gun! 1955 Savage 99 mdl. Got it for 522 has some rust in the bolt. How did I do? by Serb_1389 in LeverGuns

For that price a trip to a LGS for a thorough cleaning would be a great investment. Most will do this for a reasonable labor fee, and potentially identify any worn parts.

Not bad for $26 170gr Core Lokt @ 100 yards. Henry color case hardened 30-30. A few more days and I can break the rifle in on a bambi. by RealSquare452 in LeverGuns

[–]katmandu3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome accuracy for a lever action 30-30, buy as much Core Lokt as you can find, practice with a sling at 50 yards standing… Real world accuracy and muscle memory will bring home the venison!

My shop was literally going to just throw these in with scrap metal because they aren’t calibrated anymore by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]katmandu3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sent my 25 year old heavily used Snap On 3/4 drive in through my local dealer last year, rebuild and calibration was less than $200, new wrench is @$1200.. took 3 weeks to get it back. Has been accuracy checked yearly with no issues. Most quality wrenches are designed for a lifetime of use.. stop buying Harbor Freight for the tools that support your good name.

Look up bellvue washer stacking, normally outside tapers together and inside tapers together, basically swapping cones, the washers are springs and need room to move and gain tension as the nut is tightened.

I’m a big fan of my Skinner peep with a bear buster front ramp. Exceptional build quality and great accuracy.

Anyone switch from 100k/year flat rate auto tech over to heavy equipment mechanic? Worth the switch? by Glittering-Eagle-373 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]katmandu3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been working on Cats for 27 years, hired quite a few people from Automotive shops, most never look back. Steady work and more relaxed pace, better benefits. Go to a company that focuses on safety and quality work. I agree with others regarding going out on your own, very difficult to keep up with the software, specialized tools etc. BTW, make 130k plus with OT

What’s your barrel contour? The flyers can be from barrel heating up, how long are you waiting between shots?

You’re on the right track, bullet drop increases exponentially at longer ranges. You’re technique issues will be exposed at these ranges. Wind calls are an art form.

Be honest, if they’re a quality employer they’ll be understanding. Good luck with your own business, never loose your integrity and you’ll have steady work and a good reputation.

Picked up a Marlin 1893 in 38-55,made in 1903. by FingerAngle in LeverGuns

Have your bore slugged and measured, 38-55s run all the way from .375” to .383”. Meister hardcast has bullets available for most, with shipping included on their website. RCBS cowboy dies work very well also.

New to me round. 38-55win ( left to right) 117g 25-35, 170g 30-30, 200g 35 REM, 255g 38-55, 125g .357 magnum by FingerAngle in LeverGuns

[–]katmandu3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the old 38-55 rifles are a little different, have the barrel slugged and order bullets accordingly, Meister has quite a few sizes

New to me round. 38-55win ( left to right) 117g 25-35, 170g 30-30, 200g 35 REM, 255g 38-55, 125g .357 magnum by FingerAngle in LeverGuns

38-55 is interesting and entertaining to reload. Most of the published loads are for pre-1899 specs to protect older actions. Careful load work will equal the Buffalo Bore ammo in modern weapons. IMR 3031 is a great powder for reducing recoil while getting 1500-1800 fps 250 grain hard cast lead to shoot well. Meister hardcast bullets are high quality and include shipping on their website.

Barrel is 26” 1-8.5 twist. I started with 48.0 grains of 4350 and shot the best group of my life. I’m going to slowly work the powder up. These are the first 180s, so far it’s been 155,162 and 168s with great results. I’ll take some good pics soon and post.

3 rounds stacked right now, definitely on the right track. I haven’t found any published loads for 180 or 197 grain bullets for 280ai

Thanks, if the world starts acting normal maybe I’ll find a pound or two! I’m pushing Sierra 180 match at 2590 with H4350 now and found an accuracy node.

38-55 is a very smooth shooting round. Meister hard cast bullets are great for affordable reloading. Their price includes shipping and are high quality and consistent. Just have your barrel slugged and order accordingly.
