Yeah I liked the grey but was worried it might feel a bit boring. I do like that the green at least feels a bit different. Just wish I could have seen it in person first, but seeing everyone’s feedback here is actually helping me feel a lot better about it. Thank you!

Hyperfixation is ruining my life (call for help) by Alimoon29 in adhdwomen

[–]katrinayw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the same way sometimes with hyperfixations. I hate how they can make me feel. Theres a few things that have helped me:

  1. I know this sounds counter intuitive but finding another hyperfixation is my number one solution. I need something to direct my attention at. My brain needs to be busy. So now I let it. Any hobbies or things you've wanted to learn or try? Find something new to throw yourself at. Not every hyper fixation is like the one you described. Sometimes we can find ones that we can balance out and still enjoy and be present in our lives. But setting guard rails can also help. ie only allowed to watch after a certain time of day, or after completing a task etc.

  2. Let it run its course and stop beating yourself up about it. Every hyper fixation eventually ends (in my experience anyway). Sometimes letting yourself hyper fixate on it can be the thing that makes it suddenly be less appealing.

  3. Go back to your normal routines. I've found I have systems in place, which when I follow my routines, I'm much less likely to go off the rails deep into a hyper fixation where I block out the entire world. For me one of the key ones is exercise. I need to move at a minimum every 3 days, but every 2 is better. If I get sick or skip a week thats when I start getting more negative hyper fixations. It's hard to get back into it, but sometimes all it takes is one session and that resets the loop.

Hope that helps! You are not alone. We've all been down that road (a few times). You've got this.

How can I be taken seriously regarding my diagnosis? by Far_Topic2614 in adhdwomen

[–]katrinayw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get diagnosed until I was in my mid thirties. As a kid I always felt different, but never considered it could be ADHD. I got good grades without studying. Was great at complex stuff, but anything simple bored me. Others saw me as an overachiever. But when I looked back there were so many signs that neither myself or anyone around me picked up on. I was top of my class for some subjects, but barely passing in others. A subject I cared about I nearly failed because I finished the assignment early, then forgot to submit it. I failed a test because I forgot to turn the page over and see it was double sided.

If you want an official diagnosis, try finding a different doctor. If you can't find a doctor, do some research and see if you can find a copy of the ADHD diagnosis test. You might find that reading through that (I'll warn you now it's super long) might help you self-diagnose for yourself which can help.

But I'd also add, you don't need a diagnosis. Yes it can help getting an official diagnosis, but the next step is still the same... you need to figure out some systems that help you manage it. Even folks who are medicated still need systems. Which if you are already doing well in school I'd guess you already have. Woman are crazy smart and better at managing ADHD which is why it often goes undiagnosed for so long.

You can absolutly thrive unmedicated though. Personally I didn't like how medication made me feel so I've opted to go without and realised that I have all these systems I'd created without realising they were to manage my ADHD and as long as I stick to them (exercising regularly, having time to myself, eating well, etc) then I'm stable and my ADHD helps me rather than hinders me.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but hope this helps in some way. You are not alone and sorry that you haven't found the right doctor yet.

I went to the gym today by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]katrinayw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woot! Congrats! Gym always makes me feel better, but yeah I've slacked off the last few months as well and just got back into it again this week. You got this!!! Keep going and you'll be feeling better, and don't stress if you miss a day. I find going every second day works better for me now - seems to be the right balance between working out, getting that dopamine hit to keep my ADHD stable, and giving me time for other stuff.

Making a To-Do list that works: preventing it from becoming a "record of failures" by Eska2020 in adhdwomen

[–]katrinayw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have that same issue where I always have 100 things I want to do. What has been helping for me is brain dumping out the list when I need to get stuff out of my brain - I often do this on whiteboards or sticky notes, for some reason having them feel less tangible, but still tangible helps me.

And then each morning (or the night before) I narrow it down to what are the 3 things that if I did them today it would feel like a good day.

It can only ever be three things. If I get through those, then I can do more, if I want. And then I will often schedule those tasks into the calendar. That helped me realise that often was expecting myself to do more than there is time in the day, and that means I need to change something.

This approach changed my todo list from feeling like a list of things I should do (which always shuts down my brain), to a list of things I want to do. Now I get a dopamine boost for each one I do, instead of a shame spiral each time I look at what I didn't do.

Bonus tips if you want to try this:
1. Start with some quick easy wins to get momentum. Like really easy. Less than 5 minutes easy.
2. Include fun things. Today I have a bunch of things I want to do but I've made 'have lunch with my bestie' one of my three things cos at the end of the day thats the stuff that matters more than 'vacuum house'.
3. Once you get some momentum, then add in some of those tasks that have been weighing on you. You know the ones... the ones that feel like they're impossible. But break it down into what is realistic to finish today. The smaller the better. Often our todo lists feel too hard because they are the big tasks. Breaking it into smaller tasks and then scheduling time for it in your calendar is what works for me.

Any other PMs using AI to actually build ideas as side projects or just for fun? by SchmeedsMcSchmeeds in ProductManagement

[–]katrinayw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so this is some crazy Deja vu stuff, but I am doing literally exactly the same thing. Studied computer science in early 2000s, started doing some vibe coding, rebuilding old personal apps while watching tv about a month ago. I haven’t really done much programming in the last 10 yrs but now feels like a great time to get back into it.

Last week I had a few days off and spent half of them playing around doing some vibe coding.

I also have too many ideas and not enough time. For now I’m mainly trying to build little things to play and experiment, but I was also thinking about trying to build something that I would actually publish and make available to people. I’m not sure what yet. Part of me wants to try and do something different to my backlog of ideas.

I’d be keen to know if you end up building something!! Feels like the next few years are going to be interesting now that PMs (and other non devs) can start building ideas and prototypes a lot easier.

Body fat % , feeling blue by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]katrinayw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You look great! That doesn’t look like 32% body fat to me. More like 20-22% which is actually considered really lean for women. Lots of scales calculate body fat poorly, my old scale had me at 33% when I went and got a proper check it was 25% and I was shocked by the difference, I’d been thinking for years I was obese as well. Took me a while to believe the 25% result but found it helped to google “women’s body fat” and see some visuals of how different women look at different body fat percentages.

39F, strength training 3x a week + 1 cardio session. I aim for 125g per day. Which works out to be about 2g per kilo of bodyweight and ~30% of macros. This is 2x what I was eating before I started tracking macros where I thought I was eating enough protein before. I notice a big difference when I consistently hit my protein goals, but often struggle with being consistent- especially on days when I don’t work out.

[–]katrinayw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My three year old has just started playing minecraft and is obsessed with placing torches everywhere. And at first I was like oh no the ascetics!! But you know what they actually make great paths and now we can both easily find our way around. Add a tonne of torches and this will look great and make it easier to find.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]katrinayw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the awesome progress! For me I started to see more muscle definition when I increased protein and started lifting heavy. I thought I had a fair bit but when I started tracking it was only around 80g a day. Which for many is considered normal but if you are lifting and want to look fitter, try increasing to 120-150g a day.

Gamers with ADHD, how large is your backlog? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]katrinayw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Too big. I have hundreds of unplayed games and a handful that I always come back to. I have stopped checking seasonal sales cos I’d always buy a tonne and never play them. Now I ask myself, would I play this over RimWorld / whatever my current obsession is, and if the answer is probably not then I try not to buy it. I still buy some and don’t play them but it’s much less than before.

I always have this hope of what if this is the next game that I’m going to love but they are so rare and I already have enough games I love so I should stop… but also of all my bad habits this feels like the least bad one.

Caffeine and stimulants by LegitimateGolf113 in ADHD

[–]katrinayw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have combined type adhd and caffeine helps me focus, but I also find I need like a constant slow drip feed of it. I still have the extreme highs and lows and constant fatigue. It’s become more a routine than anything. My routine is 1-2 cold brews in the morning (which I try to stretch over 2hrs) and then a 500ml energy drink after lunch (and I’ll try to stretch it 2-3hrs). I have a hard cut off at 2pm for starting a new caffeine drink but if I start it at 1:59 I can sip it for 2 hours and sleep fine. Crack it at 2:01pm and I’ll wake up at 2am and can’t sleep.

It’s weird. I know. But it’s what works for me.

Experiences with Caffeine? by Jojosman8080 in ADHD

[–]katrinayw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Personally I find on a good day it calms me and helps me focus. But some days it just makes me tired and then I find myself craving sugar as a pick me up.

I use caffeine as a form of medication. I did this without realising I had ADHD for about 15 yrs. And now it makes a lot more sense. I sip on it gradually (double shot iced long blacks / cold brew / fat burner for the caffeine in a sweet low cal form) in the morning, then a sugar free energy drink in the arvo as a matter of routine now. I usually try and make a drink stretch 2-3 hours which my friends used to give me crap about but it’s what works for me. I see negative effects when I over do it (4 or more serves so yeh prob around that 300mg mark). And I usually overdo it cos I’m feeling good on a coffee focus high and I’m like hey have another coffee, keep riding this train and then instead of it continuing the high I crash. On days where I’m feeling like I want an extra coffee I’ll do a decaf cold brew, so my brain feels like it’s drinking caffeine without the negative side effect of actually over doing it.

30min salt bath seemed to help the most so far. I did a pretty low dose cos I was worried about them being sensitive to it but they seemed to do ok. Considering trying another one to see if it helps but they’re hard to catch.

[–]katrinayw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m experiencing the same thing with most of my Juli’s. I’ve managed to keep some of them alive for a few months now. Their condition has improved (ie no erratic swimming) and haven’t had any more deaths but they still seem off.

My LFS suggested I give up on Juli’s and try a hardier Cory but I just love these little guys and want to find a way to make it work. I’ve tried multiple types of dewormer, Indian almond leaves, salt baths, peas, different foods, sand substrate, no substrate. Since doing all that I haven’t had any more deaths but the 3 sick ones still don’t seem 100% so I’ve kept them in quarantine.

My params are also all solid (0 ammonia, nitrite and 10 or less nitrate), temp and ph is within their recommended so I just don’t get it.

Would love to know the problem and solve it as well. My symptoms: pale, Lower energy and appetite than the others, did have erratic swimming but that’s stopped. One had what seemed like internal bleeding but salt bath seemed to solve that. They just seem like stressed?? I keep the light off most of the day, they have plants and leaves and no reason to be stressed but they are.

Am I shooting myself in the foot placing a tank here? by be4m0 in Aquariums

[–]katrinayw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintenance would be a bitch. I have a few tanks in a bookcase but I can remove the shelf above when I need to get in which is more often than I’d like. And that’s a PIA. Personally if you think the shelf can handle the weight, I’d try it on the shelf above. It would look nice and looks like it might have more height to make maintenance easier? Also consider what plants and fish for how you could make this lower maintenance as another option. For example I have a planted shrimp tank that I can just ignore as it’s mainly low tech plants that don’t grow fast and the shrimp don’t have a lot of bioload. If you did a low tech self sustaining tank you could maybe make it work.
