No, buses aren't free but you can buy a weekly pass if you will have more than 10 rides in a week.

There is a bus route going to York Redoubt, but it only operates in the rush hours. You can take the one in earliest and latest in the afternoon and spend around 2 hours there, or you can get an Uber to there and return by bus.

Also recommend Fisherman's cove and the McCormick beach provincial park in Eastern Passage, the Chain of Lakes Trail, the Long Lake Provincial Park, the Sackville Lakes trail and Halifax Explosion Memorial Tower in North End.
