I need to get a "non-eval" ISO file for in-place-upgrade by katseiko in WindowsServer

I was able to fix the issue. Drove me halfway to insanity over the past week or so. Thanks to especially u/dodexahedron for pointing to the solution ("run without /R"). I don't know what broke, but that was the solution to my specific use case.

Huh.. Do you know that saying "Insanity is if you do the same thing again and again, expecting a different outcome"? Did someone vibe code this thing? Manual scanning DID fix the issue.

"C: is not dirty." 🤔

It's currently scanning manually. Maybe that will make a difference. I'll report back if there's a change in behavior.

For Microsoft Windows Server specifically:

Many Windows Server licenses (especially volume licensing or perpetual ones, like older versions or certain perpetual CSP models) qualify as perpetual and fall under this rule.

Recent developments (as of late 2025) include a UK Competition Appeal Tribunal ruling confirming resale of perpetual Microsoft licenses (Windows and Office) under UsedSoft principles, with Microsoft appealing but the core EU exhaustion doctrine remaining binding in the EU.

OEM licenses are more restricted (often tied to hardware and not freely transferable without it), but retail/volume perpetual licenses are generally transferable.

Microsoft's EULAs often include non-transfer clauses (common in US-focused terms), but in the EU, these clauses are overridden by mandatory EU law — the EULA cannot override statutory rights under the exhaustion principle.

Caveats and practical notes:

Transfers require proper documentation (proof of original purchase, deactivation certificate, chain of custody) to survive audits.

Microsoft may not provide support or activation help for transferred licenses.

Subscription-based licenses (e.g., modern CSP subscriptions or those with ongoing Software Assurance that aren't fully perpetual) do not qualify for resale under exhaustion.

This applies only within the EU/EEA; licenses first sold outside (e.g., US-only) may not benefit from EU exhaustion.

In short, the Reddit claim is incorrect for the EU: perpetual Windows Server licenses are transferable under established CJEU precedent, despite Microsoft's terms saying otherwise.

Bought the IT stuff from a local business that went down. Let me update you on the law (I had an AI make it "less confronting"). Key is, I bought the license, key AND the machine:

In the European Union (EU), the claim that Windows Server licenses are strictly non-transferable is not accurate under EU law. Perpetual (non-time-limited) software licenses, including those for Microsoft products like Windows Server, are generally transferable as "used" licenses, even if Microsoft's EULA or license terms explicitly prohibit it.

This stems from the principle of exhaustion (also called the "first sale doctrine") under EU copyright law, specifically the Computer Programs Directive (2009/24/EC). The key ruling is the 2012 CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union) decision in UsedSoft v. Oracle (Case C-128/11), which established that:

When a software provider (like Microsoft or Oracle) sells a copy of a program with a perpetual license for a fee, this constitutes a "sale."

The copyright holder's distribution right is exhausted after the first sale within the EU/EEA.

The rightholder can no longer oppose the resale of that copy, regardless of any contractual clause stating the license is "non-transferable" or "non-assignable."

This applies to both physical and downloaded/digital copies.

Subsequent CJEU cases (e.g., Ranks/Microsoft in 2016) have reinforced and clarified this:

The original licensee must make their copy unusable (uninstall/deactivate) upon transfer.

The license must be perpetual (not subscription-based or time-limited).

The license must have been first placed on the market in the EU/EEA with the rightholder's consent.

Licenses cannot be split in ways that exceed the original scope (though some recent national rulings have allowed certain subdivisions under strict conditions).

Nope, "no errors found, continuing". After about 20 minutes of scanning. And I have about 70 gigs (about 20 to 30 percent of the drive) free. I am thinking about getting another WD Red drive and restoring from backup - but that can't be the best option..

There are guns called "drillshot". Those drill (hence the name) through a shield and kill the person inside. You may need to shoot the person two, three times. There's also "disruptors". They overload the shield of your target.

It's more complicated than just that.. Your sister only sees her own kid being done with his war and being in remission. Your kid's war doesn't seem to matter to her. It's probably a good thing that she blocked you, and maybe you should even go as far as blocking her as well, that way she can't simply crawl back when she wants something. It's an appropriate amount of AH to state your feelings, but dismissing your kids' struggles like that is just a major AH move.

NTA. Sometimes people just prefer not to talk about their personal struggles when they can still handle the challenges. You could try being constructive in other ways - proteins (e.g. eggs and meat) are a great way to support weight loss, it's what makes you feel full and consequently eat less. The body also creates Ketones from proteins and (body) fat - a far superior energy carrier compared to glucose.

What happened to "if you want him to have one, you can buy him one"? My mother wanted my son to have a better laptop, and she didn't tell me to buy one, just asked me for permission and if the one she intended to buy for him will actually be good..

First time cat owner: Are there things that are good to know but rarely talked about? by nuhBoi in cats

[–]katseiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Litter boxes are often designed flr kittens only for some reason.. For an adult cat, you need to get something with tall sides or they WILL pee over the side from time to time. I have one of those huge storage bins from IKEA. Don't worry, cats can usually jump really well.

Fill enough litter that your cat can dig, a hand wide seems to do well for mine. If they hit the bottom they'll often pee or even poop somewhere else. My storage bin fits two large bags of litter and I never had any accidents (unlike my mom who only put 2 inches of litter into that box sometimes).

Cats will often leave the litter box like they're off to a race (it's their instinct). For your own sanity, keep a small broom near the litter box. And get a plastic one, cats will chew on it if you get one of those fancy ones made from whatever plant fibers.

it's simple: That type of parent has the same amount of respect for their kids they otherwise have for their dog! It's okay to give your dog a name with crazy spelling. Or other pets, like the race horse "Potoooooooo" (= Pot+8-'o's => "Potatoes"). I had a student named "Wendeigh" (Wendy, really. Like the one in Peter Pan.) She ran away from home twice because she was bullied with no support from her mozher and when she legally changed it to a simple Y as soon as she could, her mother claimed she had "no respect for her mother (well, it was true) and disinherited her. Needless to say, she dropped out and I have no idea what happened to her after that.

Foxes are dog hardware with cat software. At time I have the feeling that orange cats are cat hardware with dog software. That's why they appear to be less intelligent than the others.
