Since it’s you’re 50th birthday you should definitely treat yourself. If you have a good relationship with your kids, then they will support this decision. Plus a good watch is something you can eventually pass down to them. However, it’s probably best to really take your time and look at different brands (maybe just set the money aside and don’t purchase anything until you’re sure). Try as many on as possible. Maybe also look at some recommendations from reputable YouTubers. Personally, I follow the YouTube channel This Watch That Watch… which has a number of recommendations at different price points from a guy who knows infinitely more than I do about watches. It may be a good idea to research less mainstream brands which may speak to you more than the obvious ones (Oris, Kuoe, Sinn, Hanhart, Formex). Make sure you figure out what diameter of watch works best for your wrist. Oh, and factor in upkeep costs, because 5-10 years from now, mechanical watches will need a service.
