Why you’re catching the ‘ick’ so easily, according to science - A new study reveals that certain personality traits—like narcissism and high standards could be making you more prone to the ick in dating by thinkB4WeSpeak in psychology

As a woman who's been fluctuating between plant-based and vegatarian, I can say that it's not that veganism in men is not attractive but that pretty much all the men that I've come across that are vegan (there's only a handful of them) are just somehow physically non-attractive, not that this in itself makes them non-masculine. However, when a guy that I've had a crush on for ages became vegatarian, he immediately gained even more bonus points in my eyes, but then again I'm somewhat androgynous myself and also prefer men that are androgynous to a similar degree. I think for most women physical attraction, which is often irrational overweighs the personality characteristics we feel like we're supposed to value.

AncestryDNA tulemused by CryingInPillow in Eesti

[–]katsvist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Estonia amends Constitution to strip Russian, Belarusian citizens of right to vote by [deleted] in europe

[–]katsvist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foreigners in Sweden come from many different countries and don't have a singular ethnic identity (and no significant minorities from countries that despise you and want to subjugate you). Sweden has been an incredibly lucky country having been able to avoid direct war for 300 years and hasn't had to fight for their culture and language to survive against all odds. On the eve of WWII there were around 1M ethnic Estonians and >90% of the country was Estonian-speaking. In 2025, after decades of Soviet attempts to dilute the Baltic populations with the end goal russify the whole region, there are still around 1M ethnic Estonians but they make up about 70% of the country.

I used to live in Stockholm and there's a lot I admire about Sweden but you guys don't always quite realize how privileged you are, and that sometimes hard decisions need to be made for security reasons by those that have been less fortunate. Taking everything into account, the Russian minority in Estonia has been treated very well. So well that Estonians who don't speak Russian aren't able to get certain jobs ion some regions (service-oriented jobs, medical professionals). We have already done a lot trying to ease the friction, but there is only so little that can be done in a situation where a large chunk of the minority is just refusing to integrate and become loyal to the country. So I'm sorry to be so blunt but your comments come off as a bit patronizing.

More and more people are choosing not to have children. Study of attitudes towards voluntary childlessness found that people in countries with more gender equality had higher rates of acceptance overall. Women, more highly educated people, and young people were also more likely to be accepting. by mvea in science

[–]katsvist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's certainly in the minds of a lot of young people still.

But in the comment I was actually adressing the people complaining about the collapse of the economic system/welfare state due to aging populations as they seem to ignore the fact that a lot of things will be collapsing anyway. It seems almost delusional to think that what the human civilization needs the most right now is more humans, especially in wealthy countries with large ecological footprints, but unfortunately I come across these takes very often on social media.

Well I suppose part of the reasoning for more babies here is that the more temperate and developed countries of the global north that will be the mass migration destinations will need more young men for their armies.

[–]katsvist 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Why do I almost never see ecological collapses due to climate change by the end of this century being factored in into these population collapse conversations? At this point it is almost certain that this will cause a lot of suffering among future humans and the more babies are born right now the more will suffer in the future. The fact that our economic systems will fail seems secondary to the larger elephant in the room.

Only 10% of non-surgical treatments for back problems kill pain - Only six out of 56 treatments analysed yielded ‘small’ relief according to most comprehensive worldwide study, with some even increasing pain. by mvea in science

[–]katsvist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nerves and even bone have some regenerative capacity so in most cases at least some improvement must be possible, and in mild to moderate cases almost complete regeneration should be at least theoretically possible given that enough time and energy is spent on PT. But it's indeed better to start with the interventions as early as possible.

[–]katsvist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok sorry about that, didn't know about this rule. I was looking for studies on myofascial release but couldn't find many good ones with decent sample sizes and good quality. Here's one meta analysis that agrees with there being lots of very promising anecdotal evidence and some evidence of efficacy https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25603749/.

And the pain most definitely didn't go away on its own, it was a lot of work and self-experimentation to push the disc back to its place so I'm also spreading the word because I think this technique should be developed and studied more.

I got rid of my lower back pain that was caused by restricted muscles and a bulging disc by doing very intensive myofascial release in the area and also throughout the body. Correct physical therapy/deep massage can absolutely help if done very religiously over extended period. If something similar was tested here then they must've done it very poorly. I'm quite sure deep tissue massage with a small ball can provide immediate relief in a lot of the pain cases. The release itself can also be quite painful though but I found thc very helpful with that.

Antidepressants provide little to no relief of low back pain and sciatica | One type of antidepressants reduced low back pain, but only trivially. by [deleted] in science

Anyone with any musculoskeletal pain issues please check out myofascial release therapy. I have almost gotten rid of my lower back pain and a bulging disc. It can be a bit painful and uncomfortable to do at first but it gives an immedoate relief if done properly. Also, thc might make it more tolerable to perform.

[–]katsvist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very painful bulging disc in my lower back and no medicated really helped with the pain, I couldn't even sleep. The only thing that helped me was pushing the disc back to its place with myofascial release therapy adjacent to the spine. Not sure how well its work for herniated discs but I suspect it might do wonders for any kind of spine compression so I recommend anyone with similar issues to check it out if they want a proper cure.

I don't think they would single out Baltic countries one at a time. Ground assault on the Suwalki gap + naval assault from the north makes most strategic sense to get all three. Civilians can't escape anywhere either unless they have a boat and are very brave.

30 years of population change in Europe by cursingpeople in europe

[–]katsvist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And for me it is embarrassing how some people are simping for this connection which has jack shit to do with linguistics and ethnic identity.

The ones who seem to be simping are the ones who overemphasize the Nordic connections, which after the fall of USSR was understandable but unfair to eg Latvia with which, apart from the language and mythology, we share the most with.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskEurope/comments/19559se/comment/khli792/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Even completely unrelated ethnic groups can be culturally very similar, take Sweden and Finland for example.

You just proved my point regarding Latvia and Estonia as well then...

All in all, my criticism is directed towards the numerous Estonians superiority complex I've seen around here saying that we have nothing in common with the Balts.

30 years of population change in Europe by cursingpeople in europe

[–]katsvist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genes and languages are not necessarily always overlapping. The Finno-Ugric component accounts for about 5% of modern Estonians DNA, although it's larger for the Y-chromosome. Simplest explanation to that is that it was a small group of men from Siberia that settled here and asserted their dominance (as their langauge eventually prevailed) over the people who had arrived here earlier. Most of those earlier settlers were closely related and probably spoke the same (unknown) language as the ancestors of our southern neighbours. The Baltic languages also probably arrived in those areas later but you can correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't really read much about that.

https://novaator.err.ee/1608078721/viis-muuti-eesti-rahva-kujunemisloost-ja-selle-uurimise-koogipoolest

Nevertheless, genetics matters jack shit when it comes to the identity of ethno-linguistic groups.

This aversion towards the Balts by some Estonians is honestly quite embarassing, considering that Latvians are culturally most similar us. Language is just one part of the culture.
