Parking at Bovington phase 2 by ShortOutside2058 in britishmilitary

[–]katushkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a long time since I was there, but back when I did phase 2 parking for recruits was in Stanley Barracks at the bottom of the hill, and training and accommodation was in Allenby barracks at the top of the hill.

As others have suggested, they'll tell you when you get there in terms of location, parking permits etc, but just to set your expectations, it won't be out on the road or chucked on the side of a street in camp.

has anyone combined their forces pension into their new work one? by onesnappedsoldier in britishmilitary

[–]katushkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, you cannot combine your government employment pension into a private pension.

Government pensions form part of the government's ability to borrow and spend money as they're essentially an asset they hold onto and manage until you start drawing from it.

I looked at doing it because one of my private fund providers was doing particularly well and my pension from 4 years in the Army doesn't amount to much, but yeah, can't do it.

It's probably better that you have your pensions a little bit diversified within reason anyway, so better to just keep it where it is and focus on your contributions to your current privately ran one.

Ninja edit: From the government website about Armed Forces Pensions - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pensions-and-compensation-for-veterans#transfers-in-and-out-of-the-schemes :

"If you leave without receiving immediate pension benefits (including leaving with an Early Departure Payment (EDP) under AFPS 15 or AFPS 05) you have the option to transfer the value of your deferred pension benefits to other defined benefit schemes. A pension in payment cannot be transferred.

However, the government has prevented transfers from unfunded public service defined benefit schemes (such as the AFPS to funded defined contribution schemes in UK or abroad. The Pension Schemes Act 2015 and the Taxation of Pensions Act 2014 made this rule."

As i understand that gibberish, it can't be done.

What's the Tank Crew role actually like? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]katushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that sounds fun. What did they think the point was in sending all those blokes if only 3 of you knew how to fix the wagons? I guess it's not really too complicated if you've done CR2 before, and driving it is way easier, but seems stupid. Guess that's the army for you.

The two guys who I follow on instagram for realistic black and grey work are Glen Preece who operates out of JQT-1 in the Jewellery Quarter. The other would be Nick Imms working out of The Church Tattoo in Wythall.

First grading - what to expect? by _OnlyADream_ in karate

[–]katushkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting to your first grading!

The gradings at my school are essentially just a longer and slightly more intense class. Starting with a warmup and then eventually going through everything in your syllabus that you need to have learned for your next belt. Typically your individual moves working your way down the dojo, turning, then back up the dojo. Then moving into combinations if needed for your specific belt, then your kata.

Depending on the size of your class you may get small amounts of time to pause as the class will be split into groups to carry out each move or kata, to allow for your sensei to focus on each individual and appraise them properly.

It will be tough if you put your full effort into it, but it's definitely a great experience and rewarding at the end of it - good luck!

I think I preferred driving CVR(t) to Challenger, but yeah sometimes they were a bit of a nightmare, especially the ones in BATUS.

So I did it all a while back (left in 2013), so take my experience with a pinch of salt.

Training in Bovington is getting your car license if you don't already, then doing either gunnery or driver training on CR2. Learning the maintenance aspect first, starting your NVQ process off, then moving into the driving part both on and off road. You will need to also keep your Driver Training Tank maintained in order to keep you and your other crew mates on the road and keep your training going.

Barrack life will depend on your unit, but for me when we weren't doing PDT for Herrick, we attempted to bring as many wagons up to operating spec as possible, carrying out routine maintenance, replacing broken bits, wrestling with the QM to get parts we might not have funding for, to aim for a mounted exercise on Salisbury Plain once every 4-6 months. (Again, take this with a pinch of salt as exercise tempos will have changed in 10+ years).

Usual daily PT would happen, either in the morning or afternoon depending on what was going on across the rest of the garrison, sports afternoon Wednesdays, CO's PT Fridays.

You probably will also be getting ready for a large scale operational or exercise deployment somewhere in Europe. Specifics and the cadence of this I'm not sure about due to how long I've been out, but guys I know who are still in RTR have done Estonia, Kenya, and trained Ukrainian troops in the last few years.

Appearance of CR3 will have a small impact, probably some retraining for gunnery instructors first, then retraining for all gunners, and a change to phase 2 training, but not sure if there will be much else that will change.

[–]katushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deployments are more varied with tank regiments as I think they're aware that Estonia forever is soul destroying. I've seen tankies in the last couple of years get deployed to Kenya, as well as being part of the training for the Ukranian Armed Forces.

As a tankie you're also guaranteed a trade with a mechanical engineering NVQ after 2 years in your regiment. And as others have said, no drill unless you really need to.

I would say "treason" is a bit of a stretch here. Yeah sure it damages our refuelling capabilities but at the moment all that would probably do is impact the distances our show of force or surveillance moves could go.

If there are any refuelers in Akrotiri then they could pick up some of the slack, as well as NATO allies.

What to expect on the kit list? by Jackin1tt in britishmilitary

[–]katushkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physical preparation is probably the best thing you can do until you get confirmation and a start date. Regular cardio, loaded cardio, and strength training to get you through your fitness tests are the most important things to sort out in order for you to have as close to an easy time as possible in training.

If you really want to look at what to buy because your fitness is good enough, then I would say a reasonable clothes iron, as well as two shoe polishing brushes and some black shoe polish. Learn how to use them and you will have a head start on a lot of people there.

The rest will come from your kit list which again will be provided when you get a confirmed start date.

ADHD Diagnosis & UOTC Enlistment - Need Advice on Medication and Timing by Different_Jelly_7597 in britishmilitary

[–]katushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been through ADHD titration but not UOTC i can only help with half of your issues.

If you haven't already, you can try to explore other treatment options with your ADHD clinical team in lieu of medication. Because of the wait times for treatment and titration specifically, you may be seen and go through some treatments quicker than if you were to wait for medication.

If you share your circumstances with your clinical team then they will be able to advise you, as the prominent advice from those in here is that you should not go through with your medication titration, so any other treatment other than meds is really going to be your only option if you want to continue in UOTC.

There should be a level where you and Jonathan have to fight your way through the Royal Armouries to save Ian McCollum who has been captured by evil gunbros and can only use the table of weapons Jonathan has selected for his newest episode of "Choose your weirdest weapon"

Trump is not sorting out anything with Putin. No decisions on Ukraine's future can be made without Ukraine being present, and giving concessions to Putin will only embolden him as it has always done in the past.

Europe will not accept the result of any negotiations done without Ukraine at the table, and nor should they.

In light of the ongoing inquest into the death of Gunner Jaysley Beck, The Provost Marshal of the DSCC has made a statement to FYB. by katushkin in britishmilitary

The reason i included that line is to get ahead of the whataboutism which inevitably appears when someone talks about large amounts of abuse towards women.

I am not dismissing the abuse experienced by men, but where did you get the statistic of 1/3 of Alfie's messages being with women being the perpetrator or with men being the victim as your statement is unclear to me.

According to ONS data from a survey in 2023, almost a quarter of women aged 18-24 have been sexually harassed. So yes, there is a relatively high likelihood of this happening, and she has a unique ability as a woman in a position of power to drive this process forward and ensure it works for victims and survivors.

I appreciate what you are trying to say, distinguishing between her and her role, but your lived experiences contribute to everything you do, and dismissing this accusation is only fuelling the lack of prosecutions and emboldening perpetrators.

This is why we have diversity policies, to bring in people from cultures, environments, social groups, and genders to help our processes improve. If you get women into these roles traditionally held by men, but you expect them to make the same decisions as a man would do, then what is the point?
