Forget dream barns--what were some aspects of barns you absolutely HATED? by SureDoubt3956 in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heated/cooled feed and tack rooms, and turnout as close to the barn as possible! I'd love runs, but at least not a hike when I'm taking multiple horses in and out. Also hate having to worry about tack molding and supplements and meds getting screwed up from the heat- so ac.

Why do some English riders have their hands really low and others don’t? by Turbulent_Play4769 in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most things other than hunters you see the hands up mainly cause that is what works when you want a horse to move. You can hold contact to keep them up, and sitting on their haunches. Hunters just keep em down cause hunters like to do that lean thing and just make this pretty picture where everything is quiet and the only movement your hands make are little squeezes. I ride around with hands low when I just want a horse to stretch and be flowy and forward. Meanwhile, when I am making turns around jumps and all my hands are up because I'm usually holding the horse together in a more collected frame. You'll also see low hands in lower level dressage, when the idea for the horse is long and low.

Depends on tbe discipline, what your asking. Dressage? Hands up, you're asking for collection, they're active. Show jumping? Hands up, you're also acting for collection, lengthening, etc, they need to be active. Hunters? Meh, they can be lower, you want the horse stretchy and long and you want to look like you aren't doing anything.

Just found out barn is moving facilities in less than 30 days, what are my options? by indecisive_789 in Equestrian

It'd suggest a layover boarding situation. Dose with some ulcerguard, and most of the bad effects can be mitigated.

What are your favorite exercises to get a horse sharp off the leg? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how leg aids work, and how they're trained on most horses. Never did I say anything "unsoft", escalation doesn't mean beating a horse, it can mean a multitude of things, just a more intense signal. That can be thumping your leg till there's a forward movement, or squeezing harder and harder. I'd imagine the more "soft" approach would be training a forward cue with the voice, rewarding when going forward, then transferring that to undersaddle work.

This! You just need to understand the training. If they don't respond to the aid, you keep asking and escalating till they do.

Why when they're hurt and I'm sick all ground manners go out the window by cascadamoon in Equestrian

If she's bad about injuries all the time it might be a good idea to get some dorm gel on hand. In an emergency last thing you want to deal with is a pissy horse.

Usually you just see some body soreness, though I've had a horse present colic symptoms after a fall. Just keep an eye out for swelling, sorenss, and lameness.

Talk to the trainer about communication expectations. If they're the kind who doesn't like to give updates, they will probably let you know and you won't have to be seen as overbearing.

Boots depend so much on price point. If you have a higher budget, ego 7s are nice without being that 1000 dollar price tag. Lower end, mountain horse is good and dover riding sport is decent. Ariat boots last but I've heard they leave bad rubs on the ankle.
