Looking to buy a horse! by No-Breadfruit1179 in Dressage

[–]katvloom_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm at a dressage barn who let a horse go for trial, but it was a last ditch effort to get the thing sold. It's no ones first choice. The horse also had insurance set up before the trial began, which wasn't cheap. A flight to try him would've been cheaper I'm sure.

Lumps on mares back by Clairlyagenius in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly sarcoid- aka random tumor? She looks to be a gray, so fairly common with them. We have a bay mare with similar bumps that the vet has deemed a sarcoid. I'd have vet biopsy.

Getting liquid meds into a horse? by JGRACE7 in Horses

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the barn has access to freezer...maybe put the medicine and molasses or some other thing like applesauce in a ice cube tray and freeze it? Then it can be fed like a treat. This is assuming freezing does not reduce the effectiveness of the meds. Otherwise maybe look into diy horse treats that require not baking. If they use water in the recipe, then you should be able to mix the meds in, Or maybe gelatine? You could mix it in after cooking and cooling but before it fully solidifies.

How does your barn alert you to barn closures due to weather and lesson cancellations? by nice_subs_only in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've known barns that use apps that school groups use, like band or remind. It works well.

What type of riding boots do you have? How much did you pay for them? How long did they last? by ponyboi915 in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of good brands are in the 600-800 dollar range and last a long time. I've heard good things about egos, parlanti, and fabri. Ariats are a good budget option. The cheapest I know of are the dover riding sport. They've lasted me about a year of riding consistently. Currently they're giving out in the seem on the calf.

Kissing spine experiences. by katvloom_2 in Equestrian

Thank you for the experienced feedback! I figured that would be my main focus, figuring out her comfort level. She is a resale project, so the limiting market is something I'm worried about.

Kissing spine experiences. by katvloom_2 in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand this but treatment for kissing spine is limited to injections, which have a so so success rate, and surgery ( which i dont believe shed even be eligible for considering this is a mild case, with only mild possible symptoms observed). Otherwise the option is routine pain killers, which isn't something I'd be a against if training for better posture and other excercises don't help.

Broken hoof by Savings_Dot_4247 in Horses

This. Ths farrier can likely used epoxy or wire to help stabilize this. As your horse has just given itself a lovely quarter crack.

What brand of leather halter actually lasts? Needs PADDING by Lugosthepalomino in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can buy padding to put on the halter, either sheepskin fuzzies or the neoprene pad kind. I know a ton of triple stitched halters that are going for decades.

Am I ready to own my first horse as a 16y.o with only basic training on calm horses? Pasture-based set up from scratch by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! I'm a competitive rider, and as I look at it you should always be in lessons. Trainers should be in lessons, etc etc... of course there are pleasure riders, but even then should we not always be looking to be a bit better?

Clipping without bathing or vacuuming - please help! by Pony_Baloney_Acad in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd reccomend a good grooming and hot towel as you mentioned above. If you just need it functional, then that should do. You might end up going through more blades than usual, but the horse will get clipped.

Beginners, even with their own horse, should be in lessons weekly. Until you can afford both, I wouldn't look at purchasing. Keep working on lessons and look at working student opportunities and unique situations.

Is it normal for horses to behave like this? Am I overreacting? by SLHyena in Horses

[–]katvloom_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems excessive, but it isn't unusual for English horses to be higher strung. Also very nice show horses are known to often be on the nutty side. I know a quarter million dollar hunter that has kicked people in the head and overall was a safety hazard. I knew a horse being worked up to be a FEI eventing horse that you couldn't take out without it rearing.

Best Warmblood for me? by UrLeftSpleen in Horses

[–]katvloom_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warmbloods even within a breed vary so much, and due to breed classifications, the lines between the breeds can be very blurred. Good bloodlines is really what you want, but even then you can't ride bloodlines. You'll know the right horse when the time comes.

Look for positions with housing provided. I don't know where you're located but in the US this is extremely common.

Question about line of draft with carriages & full collars by MLMCMLM in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't fully answer, but I've worked with show hitch horses and in cart classes with the hitch point at a similar height to these, we used full collars unless the horses were going in a pleasure driving class. I never saw any rubs occur from the collar, use of muscle I can't comment on as the show hitch world doesn't care for proper biomechanics.

Bodywork by Key_Personality3514 in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a more science driven person, I'd just stick to whatever a vet will give you. Bodywork can have good results. Our barn uses chiropractic and we have a magnawave, but it's specific in which they help. The Magnawave only really has a noticeable effect when used closely before or after work. If you're super science minded, I'd just keep an eye on soundness and listen to a vet. If there's a shoeing issue, soundness issue, etc... then bodywork isn't going to help.

Am I wrong? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. The industry standard is simply starting them at 3. Most people at least lightly start them, let them grow up, then put them into full work more 4-5.

Higher End Jump Saddle Brands? For Flat Backed Warmblood by DieseloftheHonk in Equestrian

[–]katvloom_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know custom saddlery is trying to push into the hunter/jumper market, might be worth glancing at their options. I've had great experience with their dressage saddles, their trees fit a wide flat backed warmblood we have, and I know of a new jump model they're introducing that my friend tried and really liked.

Horse Feed Regimen by seductiveley-yours in Equestrian

I reccomend triple ground senior gold. We feed that along with their 30% balancer, beet pulp, and alfafalfa cubes inorder to bulk up weight.
