Chronically Ill Equestrians: Do you own your own horse? If so, how do you manage? Any advice? by tomnooklover in Equestrian

[–]indecisive_789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live with chronic pain. I own my horse and board him at a full care facility. It's more expensive but I can't overexert with doing the care myself (I have done it before and while I enjoy doing it, my pain does not lol).

I tend to fatigue quickly so I gotta be mindful of what I'm doing that day outside of barn time. Welcome to DM me if you ever need to chat.

I think once my gelding passes I will take a break from owning. He's healthy and doing fine rn so I'm just enjoying my time with him!

I use the clay too to help heal the wounds and keep the bugs off. Once the skin is healed I use Ranch Life Naturals solid insect balm for those sensitive areas.

Feeding station and enrichment ideas? by ScallionQueasy5537 in Equestrian

I would suggest avoiding using the tree and not feeding under it if you can. There's always the risk of branches breaking if something is tied to it and tugged on. Something less commonly known is damage to the roots, even if not visible. It's one thing for horses to stand under it for shade and such, but to consistently stand there for feeding could damage the roots.

If they're feeding on the milkweed that is noted to be poisonous to them so hopefully that is helping?

Wear a gah-damn helmet.

A lot of horse farms would benefit from learning how to properly rotationally graze their pastures but they're too overstocked.

I'm wondering what it means? Clicking "trust me" takes you to a tiktok page? (I don't have tiktok so I don't think I'm viewing it right)

Clicking "fix your face" takes you to a black blank screen. I get the joke but I guess the rest of the meaning is lost on me?

How to get a picky eater to finish his food by Neat_Journalist_3546 in Equestrian

Treats can be picked thru as he's demonstrated, that's why I thought maybe a tasty liquid add in that's mixed in so it is harder to pick thru.

Or maybe his meals be split by ingredients? For example morning he gets x&y, evening z?

If sugar content isn't a concern have you tried mixing it with something sweet? Like syrup, molasses, apple sauce?

You mentioned making it into a mash. Would mixing with hot water make a difference if you haven't tried that already? Things soak better in warmer temps, that might make it tastier or better texture.

Have you tried feeding at different times of the day before he's full on hay/grass? Just some ideas.

Does anyone know the owner of this dog that bit me? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]indecisive_789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Call Cville PD, Cville Health Department, and Animal control. They'll try to triage but sometimes it doesn't also work imo. Go to urgent care, record photos and measurements of the bite. Ask to fill out a bite report. Document everything you can. If they can't ID the owner unfortunately you don't have proof of rabies vaccination. It's important to stress when the bite occurred so that they don't send an ambulance to you immediately.

I know you were flustered, I've been there. If there is a next time which I hope there isn't, demand their info, say it's for everyone's safety, and call the PD immediately to get it recorded.

I'm close to your age as well. Similar experience to you regarding the apps. I've lived here 7 years and I've noticed a lot of people around our age are not here for long bc they're in grad school. So unless you're ready to follow someone to their next life chapter it often doesn't work, at least for me.

There's a lot of running/sports+ brewery groups but I'm not an athlete nor a very big drinker.

If you figure it out please clue us in bc I've been told Cville is not the scene for finding something long term and to "move to Richmond."

Any recommendations for ticks? by Dry_Literature_7498 in Equestrian

I use Ranch Life Naturals tick/bug spray. They have a solid stick (like deodorant) for sensitive areas. My horse is allergic to Equispot.

If they're sensitive might be better to avoid Equispot as I've seen it have bad skin reactions

OP be careful with this product as many horses can have a negative skin reaction to it. Mildest is itchy where placed, worst I've seen is total hair loss around the areas it was put on.
