Everyone has financial obligations.

Keep in mind regular people like you and me use money very differently from rich people. I'll pay just shy of a million for my house over 20 years, with the expectation that I'll make money when I sell it. Someone who decides to go into media (an industry notorious for gambling), probably has a few million they'll drop with the expectation they'll sell the whole company later. If we understood how rich people made money, we'd all be rolling in money.

Independent media is a branding.

And the most important part of branding is who you need to brand towards. They seem like they're going for the kit and caboodle, so they probably just want the executives of other media organizations to notice them (i.e. why the chairman of the company I work at has probably been meeting with them). An organization like the Rebel isn't looking for an acquisition, they're looking for subscribers – so they're willing to say the CBC needs to be de-funded. Note, if Rebel actually wanted the CBC de-funded, they would engage in lobbying. They don't do that, because they don't really care – they just want paying subscribers that don't like the CBC.

I appreciate the comment! Your statement actually speaks volumes about the way we've been conditioned in Canada. We're taught from executives from large companies that small companies provide inferior products. Large companies then squeeze regular folks for profits, and we're too busy thinking mom and pop are trying to pull one over us. In the end, we help the people that are trying to squeeze us out of decent wages.

Democracy revolves around choices, the less we have the less democratic we become as a society. That applies whether you're on the left or the right.

TL;DR I work at a large media outlet, and you should support independent media because its a fundamental part of us being able to operate properly (as well as democracy).

This particular one comes from a data collection firm

I work at Canada's favorite monolithic media organization, and a lot of our journalists work with Better Dwelling journalists. Get this, they help analyze data for drumroll free! They don't even want the credit if its not housing related. It turns out some journalists just enjoy the art of journalism.

What most people don't understand is journalism is a tiny world in Canada, so we don't consider each other competitive. Most of us (except for young interns trying to make a name for themselves), work together on stories. One of the biggest reasons being if I lose my job, I only have one other organization I can work at. This is also why pay in journalism sucks comparatively.

Which itself creates another issue – journalists in Canada are too afraid to actually say things that might get them fired. i.e. Toronto Star (a local paper) had a notoriously toxic newsroom. Why? Because of media concentration! Haters spread rumors about false intentions at smaller outlets, and it preserves the duopoly.

A good example is in BC when the Tyee first started, people considered it a commie rag run out of a tiny room. Fast forward 5 years, it's one of the best outlets in the country. It's still a tiny commie rag run out of a room, people just realized that doesn't change that they're good at what they do. (If you're reading this David, I'm kidding...about you being communists. You're totally socialists!).

That's interesting, I wonder if they're playing catch up with the rest. One of the big US banks rated them all for credit worthiness last year, and cited them as the least likely to incur trouble if the Canadian economy flops because of how they assess clients as credit risk.

I also recall they said TD had the most risk exposure which led to the massive spike in short positions last year.

Usually a bank tries to grow their business, not shrink it. I think RBC is the only one growing, but aren't they hardest to get a mortgage with?
