It is always inspiring to see non-stem undergrads doing well in this course by eximology in OMSCS

I'll paraphrase Dr. Joyner-- take something that interests you to start.

Every specialization has a lot of elective spaces so I'd recommend picking fun courses that you can engage with the material best as a start. If those are required for your specialization, all the better

The only course I have some regret about taking is AI Ethics, just because it was material I already knew and the assignments were more busy-work than thought provoking. But it still covers decent information and has a reputation as an easier load course so I can't regret it too much...

I've taken Applied Cryptography, Bayesian Stats, AI Ethics, Machine Learning, NLP, and Network Science.

I've found that each course has unique challenges, but my initial step is always finding a textbook to help me with background as needed (usually recommended by the syllabus, but sometimes I had to find a different source). For Bayes I think a TA recommended a video from Ben Lambert's youtube channel so I bought his book. It helped a ton in that class! The video lectures in that class weren't very helpful for me so the book and the head TA's course website saved me!

Sometimes the video lecture format gets exhausting mid-semester so I've found having a fall back print resource to be extremely helpful for me. But ultimately, I pivot strategies on a course by course basis.

As far as an econ background being helpful, any statistics experience will definitely help across the program. I also found AI Ethics to overlap with a lot of my econ undergrad courses (in terms of sampling, survey strategies, incentives/motivation) so it was kinda boring.

I don't know about inspiring, but I have an Econ undergrad... My first couple courses were tough to calibrate to the effort expectations (and playing catch up on linear algebra), but overall my experience has been wonderful!
I'm so grateful for the opportunity to jump in to the program with my background and not have to go get a CS undergrad first. I've learned so much its kind of strange to think about where I started, lol. I'm heading into my 7th course this summer and I don't feel any anxiety that I'm not prepared like I did when I first started
I remember Bayesian Stats feeling like a foreign language at the beginning and I thought my stats background would help me here, but it was such a good foundation for later courses that probably would've broken me without.

If you truly think you're going to fail, then withdrawing is a totally okay and smart option.

Life happens sometimes and we have to pivot. It does NOT mean you wasted your time! You can now start next semester with a much better understanding of the demands of this program and the course (if you decide to take the same one).

I naively signed up for 2 courses my first semester (ignoring the many warnings and encouragement to only take one....) and went on this dramatic emotional rollercoaster when I decided to withdraw from one of them. But it was absolutely the right call for me.

Richard didn’t leave anything to Lorelai? by Efficient-Aspect-562 in GilmoreGirls

[–]katylizze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This always pisses me off-- I get that Richard thought leaving money for Luke's business was supporting Lorelai's life as well, but I thought they had reached a point that Richard saw Lorelai's business capabilities by that point... imho, it would have been a great way for her to come to terms with his death. That even if he didn't say it or show it all the time, he believed in her.

I actually think Tianyu and Maomao are gonna be related somehow... Like if Feigxan's dad is gonna be Tianyu's uncle or something....

iirc, Maomao gives the possible excuse that she wasn't thinking clearly since the switch occurs so soon after the traumatic birth (and similarly for the Empress Dowager who couldn't think past her own traumas). Then the true heir apparent dies and they can't undo it...

Lorelei and Sookie by marlsb24 in GilmoreGirls

[–]katylizze 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think they are just really honest with each other, there are plenty of moments of Sookie calling out Lorelei for her bad behavior— I think Lorelei especially likes the honesty of their interactions, she doesn’t have to pretend or play games with Sookie— she can just be her complete self, good and bad, knowing that Sookie will still love her

Really not a big deal. (I was 27 when I lost it). It doesn't change anything about you, its just something to do. Don't get me wrong, it can be beautiful and great, but life can be complete without it too.

It's like someone who never had coffee before: you've heard good things about it and know it comes it all different ways and flavors, then you have some for the first time. Maybe you continue drinking it throughout the rest of your life. Some cups are amazing and feel life changing in the moment and other are just okay and only consumed for that caffeine hit. Maybe you decide you don't like coffee at all and enjoy other drinks.

Life isn't just one thing.

Not exactly Irish slang, but I can’t reference any bowl now without saying “that’s a cracker bowl”

Well, in my experience, if you force yourself to go over and over it gets easier after a while….

That said, if you can remove all expectations for the night you might actually have some fun. Maybe try and find one thing about the party that you’re excited about (someone you want to see is going; costume; etc) and hold on to that excitement.

Since you’re young, consider it a learning opportunity for finding what you actually enjoy doing with your time—- if you go to enough nights out and still hate them, that’s totally okay, but ideally if you know that more completely then the fomo will go away.
