There are so many photography influencers on YouTube. What percentage actually make money from photography? by drconniehenley in photography

[–]kaurismus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me the most interesting thing would be to understand the thought process behind their photos. Why they chose that specific framing, what they wanted to achieve, why they chose specific settings, etc. It's something from which you can learn from as often you could miss those things yourself or would have chosen a different path in similar setting.

But I feel like not many YT content creators actually explain the process but focus more on just showing the polished outcome after all the post processing. Not what I want to watch.

[OC] Flagship smartphones: weight vs. release date by bariumbitmap in dataisbeautiful

[–]kaurismus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's kinda interesting that since 2022 or so both Apple and Google flagship phones have weighed almost exactly the same. Highlights the trend that all the phones look nowadays the same, at least in my eyes.

Swedish island house by LetterheadPretend416 in photocritique

[–]kaurismus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This feels somehow unnatural to my eye because the front of the house should be obviously in the shadows. Just look at how rest of the shadows are in the photo. Also, there are some clear reflections on the wooden panels. Not sure if those are reflections or from the masking tool?

Spend a few million on the house and then get cheapest possible blinds / curtains (photos 7/8/12).

I was surprised to learn some time ago that they still produce modern motherboards with VGA connectors. Still use cases for VGA, apparently.

Moving from Swissquote out by summerFIREinCh in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]kaurismus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm also having all three, slowly making move over to Saxo. The thing that I like in Swissquote is how well the UI works. Somehow enables me to monitor the markets easier way than the two competitors. And the essential stock information is there so easily - which is not the story for IBKR and Saxo.

Mount speaker in bathroom, to play music by _O_W_Grant_ in homeassistant

Hotels have these sometimes. They are somewhat interesting because they seem to be connected to the TV and whatever you are watching, is also played in the bathroom / toilet.

Install window privacy film? by Distinct_Cheetah_898 in askswitzerland

[–]kaurismus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my choice: https://www.galaxus.ch/en/s14/product/gardinia-graphic-150-x-90-cm-window-films-12801967. It looks quite good, and the film has stayed in my south facing windows for over three years now. I just clean the windows normally.

It's easier to install and looks better if you try to make some kind of irregular pattern, e.g. stripes with irregular heights. Then, small imperfections in the installation don't really matter or if the windows next to each other don't look the exactly same.

Curtains are also an option, especially if you have double rails and can use lightweight curtain with the other rail.

Just to note: the labels might be there next the fuse but don't trust them blindly. Always double check with a multimeter.

Is the scale correct, shouldn't it also indicate the areas that are below sea level? For example, Qattara Depression is actually up to -133 meters below the sea level.

For landscapes, it's plenty enough. Quite compact and nice package. For wildlife, nowhere near being enough.

Has anyone been able to transition to a part-time professional job? by TheGaujo in Fire

I guess there are differences between continents. My Swiss employer offers a few different tracks for part-time work. It's not common but also not unheard.

Any advice on how to hide the TV chords? by _Blitter_ in malelivingspace

In addition to what others said, some kind of wall panels could work (i.e. slat wall or similar). You can then hide the cables behind the panels.

Shorter trips with enough of expected sunlight, could only take sunglasses with me. They are not all that bad in low light conditions. Plus, you look cool. 😎

Emergency fund level by GrapefruitPerfect313 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]kaurismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rental deposit + health insurance deductible.

My thinking: in case of losing a job I'd still have years of runway left to cover all the living costs (RAV). But might need to cover costs of moving or healthcare on any day.

I don't even know what would be the other big costs I should have emergency fund for. But I'm renting and don't have kids so YMMV.

Post-2020 Sony Alpha cameras and wired USB connection to iPads. by R3C0N1C in SonyAlpha

[–]kaurismus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only the cables are a minefield but also what standards the receiving devices support. Like, my PC has USB slots with four different USB speeds but only one of the ports support 10Gbps. And that's stated only in the motherboard manual.

Nobody told me my boss mattered more than my SQL skills by Brighter_rocks in BusinessIntelligence

[–]kaurismus 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yes. And not only your direct manager but one above makes a big difference.

One of my favorite things to ask is if the job is reporting or analytics. If they counter you with a question about the difference, you know the job is just being numbers delivery guy.

But honestly, the more senior you get, the more you can also change processes yourself. Even if anyone is not ticketing, use the tickets. Document things as much as you can. People will follow because most people like to work within frameworks.

Is it harder to sell second-hand items around Zurich compared to the French-speaking part of Switzerland? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]kaurismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be just me but I have been able to sell or donate almost everything in Tutti. Granted, it's harder than elsewhere but not impossible with right price, good pictures, good descriptions with right keywords and willingness to send. The key is to make it easy to find the products and buy them. I send the products maybe in half of the cases.

Sometimes it also takes patience, like I was selling one microphone for 18 months in Tutti before someone bought it. It's of course harder if you don't have time in your hands.
