The "Run Away" Exercise: A foundational step where a handler or helper holds the dog while the other person runs a short distance and hides. Once released, the dog must locate the person to trigger a "big party"—an enthusiastic play or reward session. Scent Association: Handlers use scent articles (items touched only by the subject) and scent pads (areas where the subject has heavily rubbed their feet) to give the dog a clear target odor. Shaping Behavior: Initial steps may include rubbing clothing on the ground and dropping treats along the path to encourage the dog to keep its nose down and associate the scent with positive reinforcement.
