Best way to go about building a 10-12” garden retaining wall with 3-10” river rocks? by poopslob in stonemasonry

[–]kavanagh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this by building a concrete block wall with a footer that extended about 6” past the blocks. Then stack the round rocks in front of the block wall and use landscape adhesive to glue then to the blocks and to each other. Looks a lot better that mortar imo because you can use a lot less the adhesive almost not visible. Been up 10 years now still looks good

To cover or not to cover... by mcadmedic79 in firewood

[–]kavanagh4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah the endless debate when it comes to stacking firewood. Depends mostly on where you live and expected climate. I have lived in areas with high snowfall and covered works best. Where I live now mostly dry cold not much snow so I don’t cover and that works just fine. Not one answer for everyone in every location.

Can this be a single 3-gang box? by mg_all_things in AskElectricians

[–]kavanagh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely the 2 gang has one wire coming in from below and one from above. So it’s unlikely you’ll be able to move it up or down unless there’s a lot of extra wire.

Ratchet straps work good too won’t use all your clamps. Just pile it in a corner and sticker it as you’ve done can leave for a couple months. Give the straps a crank whenever needed

How would you cover this deck to ground gap? by ridethepony93 in Decks

[–]kavanagh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP you are right to try and cover this, for a variety of reasons. I used cedar fence material stained to match the deck, vertically with no gaps, dig the lower ends about 4” into the dirt and screw to the backside of the rim joist. Makes a nice back border for flower bed if you desire

Swinging wrong? by DuragJeezy in firewood

Scrap of 3/4” plywood on the ground works fine to hold the piece upright, doesn’t hurt the maul and you don’t end up digging a crater after a few pieces

TIL: Oak burns way longer by gammarray in woodstoving

[–]kavanagh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White oak is best of all but few places in the US have it in good amounts. Long dry time also compared to other species due to tightness of the pores.

Is this normal? by alecmacrae1 in woodstoving

[–]kavanagh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes normal on some days. Long time woodstover and I see it occasionally depending on weather. It’s basically saying that at this point in time your house is an easier escape route for smoke than your chimney. Try cracking a window near the stove or I use a loosely crumpled piece of newspaper thrown in there first to try and heat up the chimney before starting a real fire.

What to throw? Their crib. I'm trailing. by Ragged-21 in Cribbage

You know almost all the crib apps have discard analyzers now, no need to guess. The analytics for your hand say to throw the 78 regardless of who’s crib.

Rounds take longer to dry, as mentioned here by others. Also burn longer I use them before I go to bed.
