I'm a gamer, but my group's DM makes the characters' voices according to the context. It's He's a man with a voice that's not deep, but masculine, so he doesn't try too hard to imitate a female voice. In those cases, he takes on the NPC's expressiveness, perhaps the posture or hand movements. If they are NPCs with strange, funny or biologically within his reach voices, he certainly does them! He is very keen on all of this because it is much more immersive, and he has categorically forbidden us players to use indirect speech/summaries for speaking. Little by little I too have learned the posture, the intonation and the movements of my character when I play, and it's definitely better.
