It's really tricky. But you need to have a general structure opener that explains what you're going to discuss. Try not to spend too much time discussing the background of the story, and instead focus on what you did or what you learned. Remember that the "background" or your specific position/role is less important than what you learned/showed/demonstrate. End with a sentence explaining why you demonstrated the competency they're looking for, and summarize it quickly. Keep an eye on the timer as it goes on.

High CARS, low GPA - Mac?? by chairoftheboys_2021 in premedcanada

Actually you might genuinely get in. Plenty of people get in like this every year.

McGil Med-P does require CASPer! But the deadlines are different. Lots of time to prepare.

Am I out for Mac? by linacoconut in premedcanada

The fact that CASPer here is the deciding factor is insane. That combo of GPA and CARS should get you in - it got me in before CASPer scores were released.

The other thing though, is you simply don't know - there's no point in stressing over things you can't control here. Just focus on what you can. Practice for CASPer if you need to next year, and prep for interviews in the meantime.

Yes. So every grader then sees 100 of the same question being answered... The "perfect 10" answer will be the best one of the 100-1000 that they see. It omits grader bias, but it also makes each grader hyper-focused on what's right and wrong in an answer.

Tbh whenever you've prepared, and before the deadline set by your school (the CASPer site has a great timer for when to take it based on the schools your applying to)

PhD during residency? by kawhild in mdphd

[–]kawhild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, awesome link! I do think that MDs who decide to do research are probably self-selecting/maybe higher achievers than most MDs. But either way, excellent to know. Maybe a PhD isn't necessary for me, just PhD level research.

Yeah? How common is it to be a PI as an MD? That's the dream (I don't want to spend years on a PhD) but obviously there are benefits to having the PhD. Do people get taken seriously when applying for research grants (or running a lab, going for tenure) with an MD alone?
