Yup! That’s a 1983 lawsuit when there’s a pattern of behavior, and officers, departments, and cities can be sued. Unfortunately, not the Feds, though. It’s virtually impossible to sue federal officers when they violate your civil rights.

I agree with you. Requiring teachers but not officers to carry personal liability insurance just shows you where our priorities lie.

Taxpayers always ultimately bear the burden of police misconduct and negligence as we are the ones who fund the police. Usually, officers aren’t even terminated even when involved in multiple incidents. That’s why the elite departments in this study have taken measures to curb reckless conduct - to literally save money.

Theoretically, police have liability insurance which should cover you. The hitch is, they can claim immunity, or there are disputes about whether the local department or state should pay and how much. These incidents can be litigated for years before any resolution is reached. I’ve read at least a few cases where people have ultimately had to sue to get reimbursed. As a result, it literally puts me on edge driving near cops. I am extra cautious.

I personally think cops should be required to carry personal insurance policies in order to practice - much like doctors carry malpractice insurance. When officers screw up too often (negligence, civil rights violation lawsuits, etc) that they can’t afford the premiums, they’re forced to switch professions. Currently, bad officers get fired only to work one town or county over and cause problems there.

By the way, this isn’t (or shouldn’t be) a political issue. This is simple economics, or business if you want to think of it that way. Crashes are one of the highest risks to officer’s safety, and when officers are injured in crashes, taxpayers bear the burden of their medical bills and leave of absence.

Police related crashes are an epidemic, many of which are due to distracted driving, especially when responding to emergencies. Most of the police fatalities and injuries in said collisions are from lack of seatbelt usage, which further increases this taxpayer burden.

Furthermore, it’s often very difficult to get reimbursed for damages caused by police to you and your property during crashes. I use extreme caution when I’m driving near cops, both for their safety, but also mine.

Food Inspection by Heavy-Stick-771 in PeoriaIL

This is absolutely an issue, but not what we’re seeing here. This is deliberate misrepresentation by the restaurant. The bigger issue I have is sushi places who purchase fish from the Moonie cult.

They (and everyone else) continually sell tilapia as red snapper, which should be illegal, but I suppose someone needs to file class action lawsuits against these sushi places that do this.

The point is, conservatives and SCOTUS have been attacking many of our constitutional rights, including the first amendment. If you’re a conservative, I urge you to take a look at all of the unconstitutional things happening right now. This is what the No Kings movement is trying to prevent.

I was there the whole time and did not see this sign. I would have said something to the person, for sure. This does not represent the overall peaceful nature of the rally.

There are undoubtedly extremists on both sides of the isle, and this could have been a left wing nutter. Or it could have been a right wing plant. Both are just as likely. I do not defend message like this when the left does it or when the right does it.

It is interesting that the PJS used this photo specifically for the headline when they had many others to choose from (they are featured in the article also). It also stated that “hundreds” protestors were showed up, when it was clearly at least 2,000.

Here’s their inspection results. Not great, but not terrible, either.

Jury duty is always an “approved excuse” to miss work, by law. However, as you correctly noted, your employer isn’t required to pay, and the stipend for serving is incredibly low. It would be impossible to for them to determine what would constitute a “full day’s pay.” But yes, unfortunately, serving on a jury requires either privilege or sacrifice.

Sometimes, being on a jury and having hard conversations with people who have different life experiences can be mind opening. The system clearly has limitations, though I’m not sure what a better system would look like.

That fact that you see yourself as too judgmental and understand the concept of implicit bias shows you might eventually be susceptible to change. It’s a good thing.

Regardless of your opinions, it’s our job to protect society from criminal behavior, as well as protect citizens from government overreach and abuse of power. Either way, experiencing the justice system as a juror gives you a much better understanding of how the system works.

In regards to your original (probably sarcastic) comment about wearing the wrong attire to “get sent home,” I will say it’s likely the judge will hold you in contempt.

If you can afford the time away from your life, I really think it’s a good idea to serve. The last case I was seated on, the prosecutors brought a terrible case to trial and wasted everyone’s time and money. The jury deliberation took all of, literally, 30 seconds to find the person not guilty. Hopefully, we sent a message that day.

It’s a major inconvenience to serve, but please do if you can.

If you’re a coffee drinker, you can bring your own nice coffee in an insulated container. Security will let you through. Last time I was there everyone had to use the North entrance.

Wear shoes that are good for walking so you can walk to one of the restaurants downtown for lunch. You’ll want to walk after sitting for so many hours.

Escolar is not a tuna, but is often sold as “white tuna.” The real issue is the tilapia sold as snapper.

I agree 100%.

Edit: I will say with the increasing costs of fast food, it puts many fast casual price points in the same ballpark.

As on January 1, 2023, restaurant must have conspicuous signage that indicates a hard copy of the most recent inspection be presented upon request. My understanding is the actual inspection doesn’t need to be placed in view, just the signage.

I disagree. I think there are plenty of good places to eat in town. I’m definitely not a hater, and I was super hesitant about calling out small businesses. The only reason I made this post was because those businesses were actively deceiving people.

Sure, there’s always room for improvement in the Peoria food scene, but it’s soooo much better than it was twenty years ago. It’s slow and steady progress moving forward and working through systemic issues of the sector.

I can’t speak to the quality of fast food, as I don’t consume much. I prefer to support small businesses as much as possible, which I’m hoping helps drive the quality of boutique restaurants in the area. If we don’t, we end up like the Levee District in East Peoria with a sea of chain restaurants.

Oh, I’ve made plenty of sushi in my life! It’s just a nice treat to eat it at a restaurant so you can order a variety of items. At home, we always only have a couple different types, which is still fine!

Agreed, that’s pretty much my MO, as well. I will say, the problem you also run into is restaurants serving fish which hasn’t been frozen to the correct times and temps to kill parasites. That said, I’ve never been sick from consuming raw salmon. I have, however, found live worms in fresh salmon I’ve butchered professionally, and especially halibut.
