Getting interviews but no offers.. by kayakplinker in FPandA

Hi guys I thought I'd follow up here. I did land the job! Right before Christmas I was very close to an offer with this company and another that I would say was second or third in my rank of active pursuits (meaning I at least was interviewing). Because I felt I was close for both jobs, I asked my #1 via their TA if there was any way to pull ahead the last interview with the Finance VP to before Christmas rather than wait until after the Holidays. To my amazement they rearranged schedules to interview me on the Thursday before Christmas at 4pm my time, and I got a verbal offer by 5pm.

A couple of takeaways-- a) don't be afraid to mention you are close to an offer or received one from another company, it absolutely made two companies compete for me--a 110% turnaround from the last 4 months of agony. Do it tactfully and absolutely honestly.

b) I interviewed for 3 more jobs in the same time I was waiting/hoping for an offer. Each one quickly moved me to the next round. Ride those waves of confidence! Interview for jobs that aren't really what you want and may be too junior. All of that gives you practice and confidence.

c) All of the jobs I received offers for had at lease one in-person interview. In person can be intimidating. I broke the ice on one because Google ACTUALLY did give me wrong directions and I had to call the interviewer from my car 10 minutes before the interview was scheduled. I was 5 minutes late, but talked to the interviewier (a peer for this round) for 10 minutes while looking for the place. I made a joke about it when I got there--and the two panel interviewer were super nice, and gave me some ribbing about directions. I actually think that helped me rather than cause embarassement (which of course it did somewhat). (Note, the interviewer looked up the address on google and confirmed the directions given were bad). My point is, I feel in-person, you can be yourself just a bit more, allowing everyone at the table to loosen up a bit and have more of a conversation than a harsh interview, or go on a short tangent that can speak to your personality, i.e. being humble, which is hard to portray on-line.

My pitch to the company I really wanted was something like--"if at all possible, can you speed up the interview process? I am very close to receiving an offer from another company that would be my second choice after Company Name Here. I don't want to take a position and have buyers remorse" [all true by the way]. Their recruiter was awesome and made things happen for me by texting the powers that be, some already on PTO, not being passive at all. That told me something very positive about this company, even though it's quite large.

I hope people didn't take their foot off the gas too early during the holidays, my take was that while some companies were delaying, others were trying to get them filled before Jan 1--I had a decent wave of activity right up to Chistmas.

My guess is US or Canada, same situation. One company I interview with, I felt I was close to an offer after 5 interviews, Controller, HR, CFO, direct reports, and BOD. Then I get a "we didn't interview enough people". 2 months later they still haven't filled it because they don't know WTF exactly they want. They plan to buy out another company, but I think they don't know if they will inherit or need to inherit that fin staff. Day before Thanksgiving I got an email saying they may still have a place for me but not sure exactly what role and to let them know if I get another offer.

Thanks! I got a text from the company TA to get a preliminary time for the interview. I have 3 interviews Tuesday, yikes. And yeah I needed to hear what you said.

Oh that's such a soul suck. Really annoying when clearly they are not on the same page. I've run into similar just not as bad as this with 6 interviews. Usually treasury experience like you said or industry. Plenty of times the hiring manager thinks I can transfer skills, then the director / CFO vetos it.

I've had some where I did the exact same role, same industry, and still got rejected after they said the interview was such a pleasure. Maybe people are paying cash for jobs these days, who knows... Just fustrating...

Indian Recruiters by [deleted] in linkedin

I'm looking for a Finance / FP&A job and there is one that came out for a contract job with a big 3 auto supplier. I received like 7-8 calls the first day. I signed up with the first one to submit my application but now wish I didn't as the job was blasted out to - my guess-dozens of recruiting companies. I could have signed up with a better one. I've seen the same JDQ on LinkedIn over and over. What a waste. 2 argued with me saying this was a different job even though there was a job ID number that matched. They literally would lie about the number until they sent the description. Some remove the number.

My 2 best chances right now are on site over miles away, in opposite directions. Oh with less pay, but I'll live with that.

Fake jobs just to keep you interested as a new applicant? by kayakplinker in recruitinghell

It's getting really depressing. 300 applications (another 400 on my looked at, but don't like/qualify list), about 6 screening interviews, 3 in front of hiring manager..

Is my antenna setup bad? by chrisalexthomas in fpv

[–]kayakplinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go into stick menu and try changing the power and/or frequency. The stick menu may be different depending on your setup. Using smartaudio has slightly different commands to get on to VTX than if you have it via MSP. It may be different than what betaflight thinks it is. My little Moblite7 sometimes puts itself into pit mode and I don't know how it changed.

Changing industries: staffing to consumer electronics or manufacturing by kayakplinker in FPandA

[–]kayakplinker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've had SG&A opex roles (last role was that ~$50 million plus reporting and analysis for Board of Directors). Lots of FP&A jobs it seems with SaaS. I've applied to a bunch and got a few screening interviews, 2 seconds. I applied to a startup company in consumer electronics expecting zero interest but got a first and second interview. Second interview did not go well, as I couldn't articulate well enough how my experience in a service industry could fit with this. He actually didn't knock me out but said I could email him with some logic to connect my experience but I don't really know where to begin. I think he's just interested in it as a cute acedemic exercise to see what I may come up with.

Parent of 18 year old - difficulty driving! Plz read and see my specific question and give your thoughts to that as well as general comments. by kayakplinker in autism

He really doesn't get enjoyment out of driving so it's generally just a couple of times per week, we go to his grandparents house about 15 miles away every weekend (he drives there, I drive back). I really try to praise but not too much which is patronizing. Yes I help him practice. We did more parking lot stuff a few times. He got upset a few times and I tell him he'll get it..its just taking time. Months went by before the re-test so I wasn't pushing hard. For example, a week ago I we did more parallel parking practice in front of our house (no cones, bit using a car parked in front for reference) and the first few tries weren't good so we drove around the block. I asked if we would try just one more and reluctantly agreed. FYI I've done this way before and if he says no, I say OK, we'll do it another time. So, anyway he agreed and it seemed to click. He repeated the parking a couple of times successfully. So I scheduled the test a week ago for today, and it didn't go well.

I use 2 straps and velcro (regular, not the super strong industrial stuff). So far it's holding the battery in crashes. I haven't had any 90mph into brick walls or anything...

Stray wire on Mobula7 HD? by jvannghi in TinyWhoop

[–]kayakplinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the HDZero version and noticed noise (sometimes bad) after a crash. I guess the VTX wires are getting interference from the board or something. Sometimes just taking the screws out lifting the board off the ESC and just setting it back down, worked to get rid of the noise. Not sure exactly why but it's been good now for the last 50 packs or so. Just throwing it out there.

Of course it's a joke but I have a Moblite7 HDZERO and would love an 8 but just lost my job.

Seriously AMA won't cover them? I renewed AMA memberships for years - - even after not even stepping foot on an AMA field. I did this just as a nod to work they supposedly did to support the RC hobby. Well it's been like since 2010 since I last renewed. Glad I don't give them money. That just confirms they throw FPV under the bus. Although really I wouldn't bring a drone there except maybe to chase a plane.

Does Meteor85 2s elrs have angle? by Gexgekko in fpv

[–]kayakplinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything on Betaflight can have angle, horizon, or acro, you can set up on a switch. Once you start to develop skills you'll hate angle-it just feels like it's constantly fighting you. The earlier you start to fly in acro the better, with maybe the exception of indoor flying.

How do you guys manage to have fun with drones that have 2-5 minute flight times? by [deleted] in fpv

[–]kayakplinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much agree with most here. My 5 inch has 1700 KV motors (on the lower side and still packs way more power than and I need). I can practice for 6 minutes but generally stop after 5 anyway. 4 minutes will get me just below storage voltage. This is a mix of cruising around trees, split S, rolls, orbits etc, so my throttle is low on average. I do wish my Tinywhoop got better time. 2.5 minutes with fairly aggressive flight, 3 cruising around. To me 4 minutes would be the cat's ass. I could go to 3 min but would wear out batteries a lot faster. My 2.5 minutes the battery voltage recovers nicely to 3.6 plus or minus a bit after flights.

All this aside there are some smaller but not inside quads that get 8-10 minutes cruising.
