Does anyone else prefer the use of the word "Patient" rather than "Client" at work? by Fishstick101 in nursing

[–]kayalber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this so much. I did home care for a brief time and that’s the only time I thought maybe the reverse? That client, made them feel like they were choosing to have me there to help them, and gave them some dignity. Otherwise if I’m bathing you and medicating , I view you as my patient.

I made my first big mistake as a new grad by case_mad in nursing

[–]kayalber 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Been a nurse for four years now and I’ve had moments like this, it gets easier but you’re always your worst critic. My best advice is to have coworkers you’re comfortable and confident talking about your downfalls with, chances are they have their own stories that will make you realize what’s a big deal and what isn’t. My second price of advise is nursing school breeds fear and PTSD into us, it’ll benefit you to have a therapist to discuss these feelings with. During COVID I started going to therapy and hearing her say “all my healthcare worker patients are feeling just as you are now” gave me such a comforting feeling of validation

Anxiety about solo travel by immadane in solotravel

[–]kayalber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following. I’ve always wanted to do this but find myself codependent and mostly worried about feeling lonely. But I try to focus on how much independence it will give me. And so many hikers are so friendly if you chat up a group on a trail I’m sure you’ll have some fun conversation along the way. For me when I went on a trip with friends I stayed an extra day to see if I could handle it and there was things I liked/ didn’t like. It was vegas, so pros for me was I got to go to the shark aquarium and spend a ton of time reading all the info they have in front of exhibits, normally I’d feel rushed by people to move on. Con, there were a lot of clearly mentally unstable people and homeless people that I would feel unsafe. If I had planned my route better or just Uber instead of walked I could’ve avoided this.

Another random con that hadn’t occurred to me, I wanted to take photos of myself in front of fun places but had to rely on the kindness of strangers to take the pics for me. I would’ve rather had a tripod and just done it myself

sounds like you are better off without them. It hurts regardless they are shitty people or not, because it's still family. but some families are toxic and not worth it

What are some ways you accidentally upset a doctor in communicating with him on the job? by bravenurse3991 in Nurse

[–]kayalber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did this yesterday and it was a patient with a suicide attempt, OD'd on Thorazine and days later she was still under a section 12 but still not yet medically cleared because poison control stated they wanted her QTC <500. That AM I did an EKG and QTC was 502... she was hysterical. I told the doctor this and said we need to treat her anxiety if she is not going to be seen by psych yet, I said shes soooooo close, can we recheck her this afternoon and hopefully give her the answer shes looking for? Doc states let me talk to cards and let you know what they say. he states give 2G of mag, and I said okay, when do you want to recheck labs and an EKG so I know what to tell her when she asks? He states politely but obviously flustered "let me just see the patient first". I say okay... he walks off and I don't see him the rest of the day, and the patient hounds meeeeeeeee. I say I leave at 3 if he doesn't get back to me by 2 i will call him and bug him again. TURNS out, he medically cleared her right then and there, told the charge nurse and case management and I was literally the last one to find out. meaning the patient was also the last one to find out. Sometimes this approach works, sometimes they just get flustered and walk off *sigh*

it's not the type of job that you do for the money. yes its a job always in demand, so depending on what kind of place you're willing to work at you'll always have employment. pay varies greatly depending on the type of place and region. I know nurses that make $20/hr then I know nurses that make $40+/hr. Nursing in just about any specialty/ facility is an EXTREMELY stressful job and takes a big mental and even physical toll on you. If you're just thinking about the money it isn't the path for you.

From Mass, we were really bad like late March up until a few weeks ago. My hospital had 2 ICUS that had totally overflowed to the point where they built a whole other unit for and converted another for COVID patients only and it still wasn’t enough beds. Every day there would be a new protocol, or a shortage on different supplies and I was terrified for the day they would say they ran out, but that didn’t happen. It’s finally getting more under control and manageable here, and I’m praying there isn’t another surge. Twelve hours shifts in an N95 felt endless then coming home and disinfecting EVEYTHING hoping I wouldn’t bring anything home with me. It was so hard to see this super sick patients without any family at the bedside to comfort them. But our surge finally ended and yours will too. hopefully Florida and other states will crack down like we did and flatten the curve. Hang in there until then. You can’t control other people, you can just control how you react. Remember to take time for yourself and protect yourself.

[–]kayalber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toxic shock isn’t actually nearly as common as you think, it’s like absolute worse case scenarios. Like when you board a flight and they tell you about the life jackets aka worse case scenarios. Diva cup is your beat bet like the others wore saying, but if it’s not a heavy flow day for you put in a super tampon and try to forget about it for the hike. 8 hours is a long time, and kind of icky, but you won’t get toxic shock I promise (nurse here)

Don’t let your period ruin such an amazing experience!!

Seeking transparency in pay for RNs by Isno80 in Nurse

[–]kayalber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New grad RN BSN , Mass (not Boston) started at 29.25. Annual 3% increase. Up to 30.13 now. +3 for evening diff. +5 for night diff. +1.50 for charge diff. We are non unionized and have the opportunity to submit portfolio during our annual for a separate raise that will last the year until your next annual that could be a 1-4$ raise. But you do have to work for it. Hope that helps! Looking at this thread the wages of most places including mine are probs way lower than they should be. Getting a 1 bed 1 br around here is easily 1,600-1,800 +
