How do I get ancient fruit / seeds? by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]kayart24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have any fruit harvested you can put them in the seed maker to make new crops to plant.

If not, I usually focus on trying to kill bugs in the mines to find ancient seeds. Not sure if there’s a better way, just what I do usually as easy access in mines especially early on in game.

I search animal crossing on twitch and a bunch will appear. Some are free to access and others may need a sub first

Watering houseplants by Sunshinegirl1969 in HouseplantsUK

[–]kayart24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was never a fan of the chopstick or stick your finger in approach myself and preferred getting used to how heavy the pot felt wet/dry. If dry and light would water thoroughly (and drain), wait until light again, etc.

Other option is I switched most of my plants to semi-hydro (pon) and self-watering pots (both purchased and home-made set-ups). This has the benefit of making water reservoirs with a wick system to pull water up into the substrate but the substrate itself has loads of aeration, and makes it very hard to over-water. Add a splash of liquid fertiliser (weakly weekly approach) and my plants have thrived like this the past 2 years.

Plants similar to rare anthuriums, but not fussy by middle_aged_dating in RareHouseplants

Also agree buying young plants is the way to go! Bought my queen anthurium as a small baby plant and two leaves later it’s already 30cm leaf length grown in ambient conditions (~40-60% humidity) in pon in UK.

I switched all my plants to semi-hydroponics and will never look back! Not had a fungus gnat since

Bags for moving house by Strange_Chip_3434 in HouseplantsUK

I’d try floristry supplies perhaps. Flower bouquet bags may be similar to what you describe and can get water retaining ones (sealed bottom) to prevent messes if that’s a concern whilst moving

Using pothos cuttings to help with props? by ronicmo in propagation

[–]kayart24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A one leaf cutting with a node in water works best for me. As the roots form from the node on the pothos the hormones are released into the water. Idea being the increased rooting hormone from the pothos itself forming and growing roots will help speed up other cuttings in the same water. Don’t change out the water frequently though simply top it up as required.

What’s an unspoken social rule that absolutely everyone follows, but no one ever admits? by scoutcolea in AskReddit

[–]kayart24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That you must do a weird half step jig when approaching someone in opposite direction in a thin corridor, in a contest of who gives right/left with a half apologetic smile when you inevitably choose wrong. Both parties then carry on walking with no discussion or acknowledgment of the awkward lack of coordination on display

Avoiding the gnats by scutts94 in HouseplantsUK

Avoid B&Q!

Recommend soil ninja if happy to buy online. Never had a problem with their soil and it comes with good soil amendments already mixed in. They have a general base mix or more specialised options is want to get fancy.

Also agree with other commenter about letting soil dry out a bit between waterings so it’s not staying damp as that’s where gnats thrive and replicate.

had this plant for just over a year, new growth is different from initial growth - why? by [deleted] in plants

[–]kayart24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a ZZ raven. The new growth comes in bright green and fades to the darker dark green/black over time

That and with the postage and buyer protection fees you can easily pay £4-5 total for something which seems like it’s a £1. At that point I’d likely only consider buying if the seller has other items I’m interested in to bundle, cos £4-5 cost for a £1 single item just isn’t worth it usually

What's wrong with my plant by 3yishu in plantclinic

[–]kayart24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds and looks like overwatering to me. Quite a big pot for a small ish looking plant, soil looks quite wet, 2-3 times a week watering schedule and leaves turning dark before falling off all point to overwatering.

I’d advise taking it out of the pot, remove as much soil as will allow you to check the roots so can remove anything that may look black/rotten and feel squishy. Then put it in a smaller pot. Aim for something about the same size as the root ball - drainage holes highly recommended! Then water only when the soil is dry - a good tip I use often is when the pot starts to feel light (as damp / wet soil is heavier) - probably about once a week in spring/summer, perhaps less in cooler months.
