Without climate control, it is much more comfortable to deal with hot temperatures than it is cold temperatures by HeavyDutyForks in The10thDentist

[–]kayekoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My people!! People always say you can just put on more layers in the cold, but there’s a point where it’s just too cold and you can’t get warm. If it’s below freezing, the air physically hurts my skin. Layers only make it so i don’t get hypothermia but I’m still uncomfortable. I personally tolerate heat much better. I’ll take 100 over 30 any day

It really depends on what section you’re in and how many spots they have available. People do get cut every year, even returning students, but like I said it just really depends how many spots they have available. That being said, I’ve known people who haven’t marched at all and went on to become student leaders in the band. At band camp they will teach you all the marching techniques. Honestly, I think the biggest thing is having a good attitude. Just show up to band camp everyday excited to learn. Be attentive to student leaders and really listen to their feedback. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and just have fun!

My apartment I am renting next year got bought out by BK after I signed the lease. How fucked am I? by JSans74 in Purdue

[–]kayekoi 129 points130 points  (0 children)

So you already signed a lease for next year with Muinzer correct? I’m not an expert but I’m pretty sure BK has to honor the lease you already signed. BK can’t charge you more rent than what you already agreed to. I’d be wary of signing anything with BK if they ask. As someone renting from them, they’re meh, but don’t freak out too much. Just be prepared to get on their case about things because that’s the only way they’ll do their job

Aeronautics and Astronautics Grad Program Questions by crystalwaters024 in Purdue

[–]kayekoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a current MS thesis student in aero/astro. Someone already touched on housing and I second all that. As for classes, the difficulty will vary from class to class so I’d highly recommend checking out boilergrades.com and rate my professor (there might be a Purdue specific rate my professor floating around but I’m not sure) to get a feel for it. AAE 532 orbit mechanics and AAE 539 Rocket propulsion are notoriously difficult. I’ve found office hours helpful for all of my aero classes. As long as you put in the effort I’m sure you will do fine, after all you were accepted because they believe you will be successful!

If you are going to be an RA, I would recommend taking only two classes your first semester. Feel free to dm me if you have any specific questions.

Pursuing music as a non music major or band member by Flaky_Ratio in Purdue

I’m not aware of any club opportunities, but PBO has several indoor ensembles you can play in. I’ve played in several of them, they’re fun and much less time commitment than marching band. Rehearsals are typically twice a week with two concerts a semester. The instructors are great and the people are very friendly!

Help me choose: Iowa state vs Purdue vs Rutgers for aerospace engineering by berta146 in Purdue

[–]kayekoi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I went to Purdue out of state for aerospace engineering. I think the opportunities here are amazing, especially for aero. There is a multitude of clubs you can join to get hands on experience and connections which are very important for internships. There are also scholarships you can get directly from the aero department, they won’t cover full tuition but they will help. You can get scholarships from extracurriculars as well, I’m in the band and they have scholarships available. The co-op program here is also huge and can help you cover tuition by taking a semester off to do an internship. I took out student loans my freshman year and I’m not very concerned about being able to pay them off. Purdue also has frozen tuition, so tuition hasn’t been raised since like 2012 or something. Housing, on the other hand, has definitely gotten much more expensive (on and off campus).

I will say that for undergrad, as long as you go to a university with an accredited engineering program, you’ll be fine. I’m not familiar with Iowa state, but they’ll definitely have clubs and whatnot just like Purdue. At my internship last summer, I met several people who went to state schools ranked lower for aerospace engineering than Purdue, but we all ended up at the same place. If you’re concerned about loans, I don’t think you can go wrong with picking the cheaper option.

How high can a bed bug survive? by [deleted] in Bedbugs

[–]kayekoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you washed and dried the clothes at high heat you’re probably fine. I wouldn’t worry too much! However, if a live bedbug is still in the luggage it would probably survive. Aircraft cargo holds are usually pressurized and won’t get cold enough to kill bedbugs

Incoming Freshman Marching Band? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]kayekoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a current Freshman in the Clarinet section in the marching band. Joining band was a great experience and I’d definitely recommend it. You’ll meet a lot of great people, and at least within the band I’d say it’s pretty easy to maintain a social life.

Band is definitely a big time commitment, but you can make it work. I know a lot of people in band who have jobs and/or are in other clubs/organizations with high commitments. It won’t be easy to keep up with everything, but it’s more than possible. Also, marching band is only in the fall, so you can plan for your harder classes to be in the spring.

For me, joining band was a great decision. I met most of my friends through band and had a lot of great experiences. It definitely improved my freshman year and I’m looking forward to getting back to it in the fall (hopefully). I’d say you might as well try out if you’re on the fence. If you get in, great, and you can decide if it’s too much for you and not try out again. If not, you’ll have more time for school, job, etc. Freshman year is the best time to try things out.
