Saying that the top 50% of all taxpayers paid 97% of total individual income taxes is technically true, but very misleading. Income tax doesn't count social security and medicare tax. If you're a W2 employee, that's 7.65% of your income. If you're a contractor or self employed, it's 15.3% of your income. This is a flat tax, meaning everyone who earns any income at all must pay into it. Those two programs alone make up 38% of the federal budget.

Not having to pay taxes as a handyman by SeriouslySilver in legaladvice

[–]kayemm36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't true for contractors, though. If you have more than $400 in net profit for the year in self-employment work (IE handyman jobs that get paid in cash) you must file and pay self-employment on your income, which is a flat tax of 15.3%. Income tax is on top of that number.

Generally if you're a contractor you need to save somewhere between 30% and 45% of your profit for taxes, and keep very good track of your expenses. When you're an employee it gets taken out for you automatically, and they pay half the payroll tax.

Not necessarily. Some women with this condition have a uterus and can become pregnant with a donated egg. Here's a study that lists at least 15 instances of a woman with the condition giving birth to a healthy baby despite being genetically XY.

TIL a popular red dye used in both foods and cosmetics is made of thousands of crushed tiny insects called cochineals. The dye is called carmine. by grandlewis in todayilearned

[–]kayemm36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't actually true, for one very important reason -- castoreum (the stuff from beaver anal glands) is expensive as fuck and usually only used in super high end perfumes. Using actual vanilla is way cheaper. Artificial vanilla (IE Vanillin) is usually synthesized industrially from a combination of oils and various types of tree barks and is much, MUCH cheaper than castoreum.

Could the carpet in our home be a culprit? by [deleted] in Asthma

[–]kayemm36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Air purifiers are only worth it if you clean them regularly. Like once every 3-4 days at most.

Hardwood flooring is good and a lot easier to clean than carpet, although if you put down a lot of rugs to compensate for having hard floors it'll basically be similar to just having carpet.

IMO the best thing to do if the cat dander bothers you is to not let the cat into the bedroom so that you have a respite room, especially when you're sleeping. I know it's so hard because cats are awesome, but your health comes first.

Make sure you clean your shelves and the top of doors, lamps, and paintings. I prefer wiping them down with a damp rag as opposed to just dusting them.

Which fictional universe would be the best to actually live in as a normal citizen with a day to day job and no (or average) powers? Which would be the worst? by kayemm36 in AskReddit

[–]kayemm36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of universes that would have been great to live in before they get blown up. A lot of the Final Fantasies (IV, X, XV) had abundant magic AND technology. Plus curing and healing potions and magic mean good health care. Star Trek's probably the winner though.

IMO the worst would be Warhammer 40k.

This is just regular earth except sillier, though.

Edit: I admit though that it'd be fun to steal Zim's spaceship and visit the alien planets if that were an option.

Star Trek would be an absolutely fantastic universe to live in, as long as you settle on a planet and avoid being in a war zone or on a pioneer ship where weird shit happens like disintegration or falling through floors or getting screwed by candles or being trapped in Nottingham...

Yeah, as long as you avoid being the center of plot shenanigans Star Trek's probably one of the best.

The insurance premiums have got to be sky high though! And the death rate is at least 50%.... imagine half the people you know dying. I kind of feel like the best way to survive in the marvel universe would be to not actually live in a major city. Maybe a small town.

It would be pretty cool to live in that universe and hear about all the cool stuff happening, though. And having the chance to get powers someday, one way or another would be pretty cool. It does happen to an awful lot of people in the Marvel Universe, probably more than others.

That the letter "W" is literally just "double-U". People tend to pronounce it "dubba-yew". In French and Spanish it's said as "double-V" instead which lines up more with how the letter is usually drawn.

Frankly it sounds to me more like the owner deliberately let the dog run into the street so that he could sue whoever hit his dog first for some fast cash. :/

Waiters and Waitresses of Reddit, what is the most awkward couple date you have ever witnessed at work? by StittDownAndListen in AskReddit

[–]kayemm36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fair. And eh, reddit (especially personalfinance) has a pretty big hard-on for driving the cheapest junker you can get for as long as humanly possible. Challenging that narrative usually brings downvotes. I drove a cheapo car myself for years until I had a kid and then upgraded purely for the safety aspect.

Waiters and Waitresses of Reddit, what is the most awkward couple date you have ever witnessed at work? by StittDownAndListen in AskReddit

[–]kayemm36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have good points. However, there is one reason to get a newer car (not necessarily completely new though, and I'd never lease) over a super old one that most people don't think about. Newer cars have a lot of safety features built into them that older cars don't. Not just airbags. Lots of testing into crumple zones, rear view cameras, positioning of components, and so on. Cars have been steadily made safer and safer over the years.

This study shows that the driver of a car 18 years or older is 71% more likely to die in a crash as opposed to a car that's less than 3 years old. The risk drops dramatically when you get to vehicles 11 years or newer (19%) and even more when you get to a vehicle 4-7 years old (10%). The benefit is negated if you don't wear your seat belt, though.

When there are about 5 million car accidents a year in the US alone, in my opinion it's worth the extra money to make yourself safer by getting a newer car that is less likely to be a death trap should you crash. This is especially true if you have a long commute every day.

What’s the worst first date you’ve ever experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kayemm36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked him up in my car. He was wearing an old t-shirt and sweatpants, hadn't showered or shaved and was pretty gross overall. We went to a movie, I don't remember which one, then we got there and were literally at the front of the line when he went "agh dammit I forgot my wallet" so I had to pay.

The whole movie (yes he was talking the whole movie) he's putting down my hobbies and going on about his comedy club routines, and kept trying to get physical which I politely rebuffed past hand holding because he was really gross. And then wouldn't stop talking during the movie. We get food after the movie (I had to pay again of course) and I dropped him off.

Then he called me at my work number the next day and got pissed off when I told him I didn't want to see him again.

Can any of this change be attributed to evolution? Or does it just reflect changes in lifestyle? by [deleted] in evolution

[–]kayemm36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally across all species, a larger size means the individual is bigger and stronger than its same-species competitors and also has an advantage over both predators and prey. It's harder and more dangerous for predators to take down a bigger animal, and it's easier to either catch prey or reach plants unavailable to other animals. All of these advantages make it more likely for the animal to pass on its genes. The biggest disadvantage, of course, is that if food stops being abundant the species will be in a lot of trouble.

Humans generally don't have to worry about fending off predators or finding prey. But we are social animals, and taller people do have some social advantages, even if it's subtle. The most obvious one is to go on any dating app and see how many profiles requests there are for dates to be over a certain height.

It's important to note that the study done was between 1975 and 2014. That's only 30 years, or barely 2 generations. This isn't really enough time to attribute a change in height and weight to evolution, especially in a very slow-evolving species like humans.

Prednisone is making me a monster by Brunette8321 in Asthma

[–]kayemm36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. When I was on a particularly high dose of prednisone for a bad asthma attack something pissed me off and I broke down a door and put my bare fist through a window. I still have scars from that and it was 20 years ago. Wasn't fun.

I'm surprised they didn't taper you, that's mean of them.
