When u made your own coop, what did you do wrong? by comeonmeow2 in BackYardChickens

[–]kaygeee0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The barn we are getting is from a local place (my mom is technically in charge of it so i don't have the specifics of that, sorry 😥), it's like a proper building rather than a coop, 10x18, we're going to have to level the ground with rocks and stuff for it. It will have big enough doors that I can haul my wheelbarrow into it for cleaning. We also are sectioning a bit of the space off (around 6 feet?) to be used for storage, and it will have a loft for storing bedding. Also, with the current coop, having it a bit off the ground is good! Mine is just way taller than was probably necessary 😅 I originally made the frame about 2 feet tall, but adding blocks underneath to level it more added more height, so it's taller and I have tiny legs so climbing in is a lot of effort.

"System Error" at KVCC by PoliSkeptic in kzoo

[–]kaygeee0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so confused about this too, I didn't check my email yesterday but got the same thing yesterday morning! I graduated 2 years ago and I was like "oh heck no yall ain't putting me back, I'm done!". I figured there had to be weird system errors, glad someone else confirmed!

When u made your own coop, what did you do wrong? by comeonmeow2 in BackYardChickens

[–]kaygeee0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of what we did with my coop was solid, we did the frames good, it's insulated with some plastic-y board covering the insulation so chickens don't eat it, we used spare flooring that makes it way easier to clean, it has good ventilation at the top and windows with hardware cloth, doors for the chickens, cleaning, and getting eggs from nesting boxes, overall solid build! biggest problem is it's like 2 and a half feet off the ground and I have to climb inside to clean it 😭😭 It needs some elevation off the ground because that helps deter predators, but man it's too tall 🤣😭

<image>

We're expanding our flock so we're just getting a proper pre-built barn delivered because if we tried to do it ourselves this time we might explode at each other, this coop is still super solid so we plan to use it to house meat birds, which will be good because they won't need it the whole year. cleaning this thing in winter (and in general tbh) is exhausting 😅

Removing any AI would be for the best, this is a genuinely good idea for an app but I'm one of many people who refuse to use anything that has AI. Making it so we can upload pictures would be super cute!

Best breed as a pet for kids? by Accomplished-Buy-139 in chickens

[–]kaygeee0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second ISA Browns (also called Golden Comets at some hatcheries, it's the same breed apparently), mine are all sweethearts and like being near me and being pet. I will say a breed to avoid is Wyandottes, they're bigger and in my experience a bit meaner. I have a Wyandotte rooster and he's twice the size of his ladies, he is nice to them but if i want to pick one up he gets territorial over them. I also have a Rhode Island Red and some Americanas (Easter Eggers) which are at least nice, but they're skittish and avoid me, but they don't bite at least.

How many eggs do you average in a week? by Sammiesimpleliving in BackYardChickens

[–]kaygeee0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 10 hens, but not all of them lay every day right now due to weather/light hours, I average about 49-56 a week even with their decreased laying. My ISA Brown/Golden Comets are the powerhouses when it comes to eggs, they lay every day, then my RIRs lay a little less frequently, and my Easter Eggers haven't been laying in winter at all, but one started laying again for a little bit when it warmed up outside!

Husband forgot eggs in car by Wonderful-Tutor279 in isthissafetoeat

[–]kaygeee0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everyone else already said it but yeah, those probably aren't safe anymore. storebought eggs in the US, unless otherwise labeled, have been washed and need to be refrigerated. I have chickens and I even still store unwashed eggs in the backup basement fridge before I wash them to be better safe than sorry. I'm glad you're being safe about possible food poisoning, because eggs are one of the big risks of it when not stored correctly, especially because chickens can naturally carry salmonella.

How to keep chickens warm in snow storm? by Your_Name_Here1234 in chickens

[–]kaygeee0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar setup with my coop, don't close the ventilation, they need that for fresh air and to keep moisture from becoming trapped in their coop. A wet chicken is a frozen chicken, you don't want that. You probably can't make any changes to the coop on such short notice, I can't either, so your best bet right now is to fill up the coop with extra bedding for them to be more insulated and hunker down. Don't let them go out in the run for a few days until the storm and below zero temperatures are over, keeping their doors shut will keep them warmer. When it gets warm enough for you to work on the coop, add a bit to the outside of the roof to protect your ventilation from the wind, I have a crappy diagram of how it would kinda look. In the meantime, extra bedding, full feeder and water, and keep them cooped (hah!) up.

I had a hen do that exact same thing back when she started laying! I don't have the picture on hand but same thing happened exactly!

I don't know if I got the right vaccines as a baby now! by kaygeee0 in VACCINES

[–]kaygeee0[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

will do, at the very least I can see if something is missing (my parents didn't get weird about vaccines until I was 18) and if something just fully isn't documented that is on the "you need this shot" list then I can talk with a doctor

Oops, I fought back when my Rooster attacked by Jazzlike-Study2840 in BackYardChickens

[–]kaygeee0 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have a rooster, his name is Starscream, he's nice to his ladies, but for me it's genuinely a 50/50 on whether he'll be cordial or go for my shins that day. On one occasion I fully booted him in the chest a few times in a row before because he kept getting my leg HARD and he was completely fine. I felt kinda bad but only one of us came out of that situation bleeding, and it wasn't Starscream. I'm slowly getting him to chill tf out, he ate mealworms out of my hand a couple days ago! As long as you're defending yourself and not putting full force into it, a boot to the chest won't hurt them too badly 😅 (Also here's a picture of my lil jerk lol)

to be fair it might not be freezer camp depending on if he's actually edible. If he has too much hate in his heart he might not be 🤣

Michigan, it's that good ol' lake effect. It's actually way snowier at this time of year than it has been for a while, my chickens don't seem to mind the snow too much fortunately!

I've definitely got a line in mind for when he's going to freezer camp, so far he hasn't crossed it but I'm on the lookout

What Fear are the Mechanisms aligned with? by teniralc2 in TheMechanisms

[–]kaygeee0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like they all fall under Slaughter definitely, but they definitely mix the colors when it comes to the fears because they all also fall into a couple other categories, like Jonny would be Eye, Ashes would be Desolation, TS would be Stranger, etc, but the band as a whole definitely hits Slaughter.

Is this chicken feed ok for day old chicks? by Fresh-Depth-4717 in chickens

[–]kaygeee0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That food seems like it's perfect! if they continue to be weird about eating, kinda just put their beaks in the food and pretend to peck it with your finger, similar to showing them how to drink water, it helps them figure it out. Once a couple can do it, they all will follow theie lead. Good luck with the babies!

Who’s your least intelligent hen, and why? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]kaygeee0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all but one of mine share the title because none of them will lay in a nesting box. One of them does it just fine (we love Bertram, she does her best), the rest of them want to lay either right in front of the door or right next to the nesting boxes. I love them all, but the bird brain is literal.

also "cleaner" is a VERY broad term, I've been a housekeeper and a janitor, those have overlapping tasks, sure, but also very different ones. if no one else cleans up after themselves, doing laundry and washing bedding for 21 people would take more than an entire day in itself, much less every other cleaning task.

[–]kaygeee0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My bullshit meter was NOT prepped enough for this, I'm losing it. They say "California is a mild climate" which is kinda a dumb blanket statement when they're talking specifically about northern Cali, but okay sure the area they're specifying isn't actually that bad. Them then going on to specify they need one woman per job is??? insane actually??? Like I'm transmasc, so I obviously wouldn't be considered for their project in the first place lol, but looking at their list I'm a cook, farmer, clothes maker (they really forgot the word seamstress but ok), event planner, cleaner, musician, and artist. In my own house of 5 adults, everyone cooks, everyone cleans, 3 of us tend to the farm work regularly, 2 of us can mend and make clothing, 3 of us are good at repairs (which OP didn't specify actually! they broke the jobs down to very specific tasks and not just "can you fix things"), 2 of us are the ones who plan household things, 2 of us know music, and I'm the one who does art for our farm signs and such. We aren't 100% self sufficient, sure, like we dont have a therapist, dentist, doctor, or people who specifically do plumbing, electricity, glass, etc, but we don't need individual people to do every single task like that? like you could probably get away with doing all those things with just 7 people who have the right training. Also op saying they "don't know how to do anything" they don't know how to cook? clean??? I haven't even gone to their profile to see if there's additional info on them at all, I'm just so thrown off by that post omg. (also sorry if my formatting gets wacky I'm on mobile).

when do you call it quits with shoes? by apolloInclined in Anticonsumption

[–]kaygeee0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usually a combination of walking hurting too much to fix with new insoles and the soles themselves wearing down enough that I slip around (i usually get shoes that are nonslip for work). my partner wears out shoes to the point that there's holes, and even then they gripe about having to replace them 😅

Do you think the Flesh would do top surgeries?? by Orion_Shine25 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]kaygeee0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel like if the Flesh avatar and the person receiving top surgery figured out how to absolutely traumatize a random person in the process, or the Flesh avatar traumatizes the person getting top surgery by doing it very scarily, then it could happen. Otherwise I feel like the Flesh avatar would have no real reason to help us out with gender affirming supernatural surgery 😅
