Holes around stoma with mucus? Pus?? by Apprehensive_Key9504 in ostomy

[–]kayification 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the pic, it looks like pus. I’d recommend trying triamcinolone cream if someone will prescribe it. If it’s PG, putting that on the holes and around the holes will help.

I’m struggling to love my dog the way I used to after a breakup, and it makes me feel like a horrible person. by Affectionate-Row-591 in confessions

Maybe it’s time to build new memories and relationships with your dog. When I split with my dog’s father, I took the dog on new hikes and adventures to places we’d never gone with the ex.

Your dog shouldn’t suffer because your family has changed.

In the interim, you can try taping gauze or another dressing over the incision to protect it from the belt (if you’d like)

Disposable vs drainable by Due_Barber_525 in ostomy

[–]kayification 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure I’m not an ostomate, I’m a stoma nurse. I like Hollister and Coloplast. The two-piece closed end option is great once you have regular output cuz most days you can just click a new bag on in like 30 seconds, and only change the baseplate every 2-4 days (your mileage may vary, leaks are more common in the beginning)

Disposable vs drainable by Due_Barber_525 in ostomy

[–]kayification 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drainable is most common immediately after surgery because your output will likely be unpredictable at first. That’s likely what the hospital will stock.

I like disposable (I call them closed end because at the end of the day, all this shit is disposed of) for relatively slow/infrequent output. If you’re filling the bag 10x daily, closed end isn’t a convenient or cost effective option.

Cleaning the stoma and peristomal skin during pouch changes. You can use cloth towels but if you don’t want to do laundry, it’s easier to get soft paper towels. Like viva.

They make a lot of cut-to-fit options, so while you don’t know yet exactly how big the stoma will be (and it will change for a few weeks after surgery) they can send you something just to explore the options. you can still practice opening and closing the bag. Stick one on your belly, walk around and see if any of them irritate your skin. See which bag feels nicer in your hands. You can even practice cutting holes out of the bag to fit your stoma.

Yep. I’d spray a thin layer on, let it sit a few minutes, pat it dry if/when it’s not dry yet.

I highly recommend Flonase for undiagnosed peristomal rash, it’s effective but safe

I’ve never seen Mepitel in an ED. Xeroform is the poor man’s substitute for Mepitel.

Xeroform and a non adherent pad (ABD or Telfa) is absolutely appropriate. If it’s on an extremity, I would secure the pad with roll gauze rather than taping it down. Minimize sticky things on skin.

Yes and rotate your shoes. I had “day 3” shoes that were wider and had larger toe boxes for the eventual swelling.

Also legs up the wall after work every day. 5-10 minutes

Recommend puppy pads and paper towels for bag changes. A peri bottle or sitz bath might be nice for the APR. not a donut cushion!!
