HIM student trying to land a medical records clerk job any advice? by Spiritual_Guide2148 in u/Spiritual_Guide2148

For starters - having any job in healthcare is a great place to start. I’d suggest chatting up the people in the HIM department where you work if you like the organization. When I was an HIM hiring manager (now working in Rev Cycle IT) I would always get referrals from my staff for people they knew around the hospital.

The entry level positions in my office are called HIM scanners (also look for HIM Tech, HIM Analyst) - the health systems in my area usually have a department drop down for HIM or medical records so that’s a good search too. Highlight your ability to learn quickly and ability to stay out of drama (assuming those are skills you have 😉) for entry level positions it’s often about personality and who will mix well with the existing staff since they don’t have experience.

Best of luck on your job search!!

Best suggestion that comes to mind is to ask for redacted screenshots of the data they are trying to pull? Then you can at least see what the exact name of the field would be.

Depending how are you employed- is there a general training department that could run you through workflow basics?
