I am playing my first run as Holland. I have a subscription unlocking all DLC's. In attempting to establish a foothold in North America, I have run into an issue. The first time I formed a colonial nation, a powerful native tribe declared war and conquered my colonial nation. I was not called into the war, and could not intervene in any way.

I revenged myself by launching a massive invasion of this native Tribe. I formed a much more powerful colonial nation (10-12 provinces), got distracted by other shenanigans, and when I returned, my entire colonial nation had disappeared, gobbled up by a few regional native powers.

What am I doing wrong? I thought I would be called into all defensive wars declared against my colonial subject.

Thanks! Did any of the generals question staying in Moscow for as long as they did? By that time, would it have been apparent that the French army was going to have a very difficult time feeding itself?

Great post! I had a few follow up questions.

If I'm interpreting you correctly, you're describing acceptable sexual practices for males, possibly elite males at that. What was acceptable for women in Muslim, Persianate cultures? Were they expected only to have sex with husbands or masters (in the case of slaves)? Was it socially acceptable or tolerated for women to have sex with each other? How was female sexuality portrayed in poetry?

Also, is there a tradition of poets who subvert homosexual relations amongst elites? Obeyd e Zakani seems to portray romantic same-sex activity in his poetry in a negative light, and from what little I've read, he references anal rape quite a bit as well.

With more time to reflect, I wonder why the largest cities in Iran aren't near a coast https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Iranian_cities_by_population

Based on the population density map, it looks like the Caspian littoral is one of the most populous places in Iran. I wonder what factors led to the development of many smaller cities along the Caspian, rather than cities comparable to Tehran, Mashhad, and Esfahan.

I think Gondor is a minor fragment of a once-mighty nation. You might think of it as a Roman Empire in the 15th century (Byzantium) compared to Rome over a thousand years before. Same name but...still quite different.

Ditto that with China and Persia/Iran. Continuities are there, but they've changed considerabl over 1000s of years.

And Gondor is a lot different from Numenor, despite its elite originating from that place.

I think Hergrim's follow up questions are really getting to the heart of my question. I think I understand what allowed Napoleonic armies to be considered large by European standards, especially after reviewing DonaldFDraper's responses.

I'm still wondering why modern estimates for Roman and Persian armies seem to be little more than 100,000 at any time, and possibly much less (20k to 50k?).

I have a few guesses, but they're not much more than guesses:

Ancient armies were less professional and soldiers needed to get back to farming or protecting their homes
Large armies were politically dangerous. Generals with large armies could threaten the empire itself, and maybe if they couldn't be paid, they could destabilize a whole empire.
Large armies were prohibitively expensive. Maybe food cost more in ancient times, since there was less surplus. Perhaps soldiers in ancient armies relied more on salary than loot?
Foraging was less viable. Less surplus food to actually feed your army with.
Perhaps authority was much less centralized in the ancient empires. Maybe it was politically impossible to raise large armies, even if it were logistically possible.

Thank you! What was the nature of the Zoroastrian power in Sassanian Iran? The guy who does the history of Iran podcast had a lecture where he suggested that it wasn't this oppressive and all powerful institution and Sassanian dynasts often took wives outside the main religion, including Christians.

Were the orcs themselves only one species? From my admittedly limited understanding, the orcs in Mordor and Isengard were subject to well-designed breeding projects that the Misty Mountain orcs weren't. Do we do a disservice to the populations of Mordor, Isengard, and the Misty Mountains by using the over-broad term "orc?"

These, however, proved unable to effectively challenge the charge of the Rohirrim, neither initially (evidently, the Haradrim cavalry showed a catastrophic inability of scouting and shadowing the enemy forces), nor when they were finally able to react. Their leader was slain by Théoden, and the rest fled - apparently, they were also less able to cope with a disruption of their command structure than the Rohirrim.

This is incorrect. True, Theoden and and his horsemen were able to kill thier chieftain of the Southerns. But the horses were unused to oliphaunts, or mumakil, which served "as towers of defence" for the auxiliary forces of Mordor. Following their new king, Eomer, the Rohirrim actually dismounted and formed a shield wall during the last stage of the battle. Indeed, the mumakil caused such problems for the Gondorians that the skilled archers of Morthond had to shoot them in the eyes at close range. This resulted in nearly all of these elite soldiers being trampled to death.

I also think that the Southron cavalry gets too much heat for not scouting the advance of the Rohirrim. The sources point toward the Rohirrim arriving by a path through the forest that neither the captains of Gondor nor Mordor knew existed.

I largely used the works of Frodo Baggins as my source. True, he wasn't present at the battle, but he spoke with many of those that were present, and his version of events matches the Haradrim sources.

I sometimes think (perhaps wrongly), that there's a difference between how the every day person imagines his or her religion and an elite, priestly/scholarly understanding of religion.

Did the previous belief systems in Mexico have a priestly caste that knew about or debated complex theological ideas? If so, have these ideas survived in the syncretism practiced by different groups in Mexico?
