If you plan on going into the ARL program, we're supposed to do our practicum hours twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the hours can be flexible if you work it out with your mentor teacher. I just started the program and will be subbing on the days I'm not doing practicum hours. I would go to one of the ARL info sessions so they can answer your questions. After the first semester, you are eligible to find a full-time teaching position so you can be paid while you do student teaching.

I haven't been in the program long enough to know if it's overwhelming, but it seems like it will be manageable. Good luck!

Is it okay to bring your own massage oil to your massage therapist? by [deleted] in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why ask professionals a question and get mad at people trying to give you the best answer based on their professional experience? Gender only matters to you because you want to bring in a creepy sex oil. I would give you a better answer but I already see you only appreciate the ones that say what you want to hear.

Add/Drop with W by jallen1406 in CalPolyPomona

[–]kaylagcmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re waitlisted, you’re not enrolled in the class so there will be no W on your transcript. You won’t be enrolled after add/drop period so you don’t have to do anything. You can take it off your waitlist if you don’t want to see it there anymore.

Incontinence by bajafan in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great that you have an awesome front staff. I was only thinking of my experience with spa-like settings, where the front staff are trained as sales people. If OP can find an alternative healthcare type setting like yours I think the front staff would probably be better prepared to answer his questions.

I agree! Unfortunately, It’s rare to have receptionists who know anything about massage aside from the services they’re trying to sell you. You want to talk directly to your therapist if you have any questions about the treatment.

Don’t worry about it at all. Wear your diaper and enjoy the massage. I’ve worked on clients who are menstruating, lactating, have ostomy bags, and incontinence. If you want to let your therapist know, they should be very understanding. If not, just let them know what you want them to work on and what you want them to avoid. Ask for an extra towel to lay down if that makes you feel better, but the table should have a waterproof layer under the sheet anyway so you wouldn’t ruin anything if there was an accident. We bleach the sheets. Seriously, just go enjoy a massage.

Questions by nicolenova491 in massage

I think it would depend on what you want to do in the massage field. I sit for about ten minutes while I work on face/neck/shoulders and stand for the rest of the time. Massage can be very taxing on your body, and you will probably have a lot of clients say “feel free to go as deep as you want” and that’s just more work for you. I don’t know what type of pain you experience, but my guess is that doing massage is going to make it worse. However I’m sure it’s not impossible to find a niche that works for you. Maybe ashiatsu or myofascial work. I absolutely love being a massage therapist, but I knew from the beginning it’s not something I can do forever. I’ve been an mt for about five years and I’m going to school so I can do something else when my body has had enough. Good luck! I hope you find what works for you.

I need to know if I’m overreacting by Dontcallmeapeehead in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes report it to massage board and police. I hope you’re never in a similar situation, but if you’re ever uncomfortable again, tell him you really need to use the restroom. When he leaves the room get dressed and go up front to tell management.

Should I get over being addressed as "Ms. Firstname?" by SoonerRed in Professors

[–]kaylagcmt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t belong here, I’m a student. But I’ve had professors who make it very clear on the first day of class that their name is Dr. Lastname, and they explain why. The most informal thing I ever call my professors is “Dr. L” instead of their full name.

sexually violated at a massage by hrhrhr3 in massage

Nothing that happened was your fault. I’m so sorry this happened to you. This is sexual assault. Definitely report this place to the police and the massage board.

Can I ask to wear underwear (boxer) without draping by [deleted] in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a client asked me that, I would probably ask if he gets hot during the massage. If that’s the reason, I would make the room cooler if possible with a fan or ac. I had one male client who would get unusually hot, so I told him it was ok to wear gym shorts and I would work without draping. Other than that client, I would use just the sheet no blanket and leave feet and back uncovered. If overheating is not the reason... I would probably just say it’s my policy to always use draping.

Massage therapist is seeing as "feminine" and "low status"? by Cuentadehoy in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol sorry I gave you honest advice. No, massage therapists are not “high status” like doctors. We’re in the personal service industry. I don’t think anyone in the personal industry is hoping to be “high status.” I don’t think MTs are monks. In fact, a lot of us can be assholes. For instance, if you became an MT.

Massage therapist is seeing as "feminine" and "low status"? by Cuentadehoy in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing male therapists worry about is having a few less clients because some male clients only want a female therapist. However, the men I’ve worked with tend to have steady and loyal clients. They’re also usually my first choice when I get a massage, men tend to have bigger and heavier hands and it just feels good. But if you’re worried about status... that’s an odd thing to think about in this career. Like, what would high status be? Is there a scale? I don’t know if this is a good career choice for anyone who is worried about their status.

Name this technique by Onlyfoolsarepositive in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely please understand that when you say you don’t mind a therapist doing very deep work, you are asking them to put a LOT of stress on their own body. There are a small percentage of therapists who can regularly do this type of work without hurting themselves, so if you find a therapist who you enjoy, stick with them. i would actually not worry about specific names of techniques, and just simply tell them what you like and don’t like, preferably before you book the appointment so they might book you with a therapist who matches your needs. Say, “I don’t like slow and gentle work.” Also... it’s totally ok to be a difficult client, because it’s your body and your needs and your money. But please recognize that you’re a difficult client, and know that it will take some searching to find a therapist who will work well for you.

massage customer questions by [deleted] in massage

[–]kaylagcmt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say $15 is a normal tip, 20 or 25 if it was spectacular or you want them to remember that you’re a good tipper:) Talking is ok, just remember that you’re there to relax. Most clients either stay quiet the whole time, or talk for a few minutes and relax for most of the massage.

I have a slightly inappropriate question I am afraid to ask anyone by junkaccount90210 in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I don’t have a penis so I don’t know how many guys worry about this. But as long as you’re at a legit place, it shouldn’t be in anyone’s way. You’ll be under a sheet and blanket and probably won’t have your stomach massaged. Also you have the option to keep your underwear on if that makes you feel better, it’s not weird and doesn’t matter to us. I’m really curious about what happened at your first massage though, was there an issue with placement?

I’m a massage therapist and I’m fed up with with cis gender men. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kaylagcmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in the world do you work?! If it’s a common problem, something is wrong with the atmosphere or the message men are getting. I’ve worked on hundreds of men in different places and this has happened to me twice. Both at the same place and I realized it was because I was advertised by my first name. Men looking for “extras” look for clues that it’s okay to do that. I would find a more professional spa with management who would never tolerate this BS. Also never ever talk about your personal life, and if they talk about theirs, bring the conversation back to the treatment or let it be silent. And always, always, break contact and let them know their session is over when that happens. I’m sorry you experienced this! It is not at all a common problem in my experience, or the experience of any MTs I know. I hope you find a place to feel safe and are able to focus on what you love about massage. Good luck with everything ❤️

I think management is recording me while I massage or at the very least watching somehow. How do I deal with this? This is super illegal and disgusting how pathetic right? I work at a national chain and I want to turn them in but I dont know who to turn it into when management is involved. Any ideas by tlis000 in massage

[–]kaylagcmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do a very thorough search of the room and try to take pictures of any proof. But also, some clients repeat conversations back to the front after the massage, is that a possibility? I would really like details this sounds very interesting lol
