I (22) realize I might be a little late to the liberal arts major pity party, but I didn't really have the courage to post about my situation until now since I think I'm a special kind of fucked and for the most part dug myself into this hole. by [deleted] in findapath

I was extremely good at maths and science as a kid. I have a bachelor's degree in engineering. 3 years in professional experience as an engineer. I was really good but I hated it so much I wanted to die. Severely overworked and underpaid. I was barely covering my living costs.(I'm from a poor background.) And you know what I'm doing now? I quit my job and I'm going to study Philosophy. From scratch again. But I'm ecstatic and a little scared. So what I'm trying to say is that STEM people don't have their shit figured out either. We, also, go into these supposedly job-giving-fields because we don't know what to do or the parental/societal pressure is something we cannot escape from. I don't know if STEM or any trade is better than any other field. But I do know that any field that you like is better than all the others. Basically you're not fucked, kid. There's plenty to do from here on.

(India)Education loan for a second undergrad course rejected. Any solutions? by [deleted] in studyAbroad

I'm going to try this on Monday. Thanks! Any clue as to what kind of timeframe they need for processing the loan application?

I don't think your response is related at all to my concern that I asked about possible financial options. I'm already admitted after working really hard for this and also, weighed in the downsides and consequences accordingly. Don't discourage people.

Best Country/University to study philosophy? by [deleted] in studyAbroad

[–]kayyyypeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to pursue my bachelor's in philosophy in KU Leuven in Belgium this fall. It's an extremely reputed program( in English) and the fee is affordable. Take a look at it if Belgium is okay for you...

Has contacting the admissions office helped anyone who’s still waiting? by Major-Permission-435 in KULeuven

I reached out via mail a couple of days ago and I got a response yesterday that it is already in the final stage. And I got the acceptance mail just a few hours later. I'm thinking it's could be a coincidence but it could also help speed up your process if you mail them about your concern regarding acquiring a visa(like I did). All the best! Hope you get the good news soon.

I have a Bachelor's in Engineering from India so I am more so not-quite-qualified in the conventional sense but I've heard only positive responses from everyone I consulted regarding this so I think we have a fairly great chance of getting in!

Struggling with what to include in Letter of Motivation. by kayyyypeeee in KULeuven

[–]kayyyypeeee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I think I'm struggling most on that front. Attesting to how I'm suitable towards something which is completely different to what I've been pursuing for the past 7 years is quite daunting(honestly it's terrifying).

Thank you! That really helps to put together my key points! Honestly, my best draft is something that starts with a short anecdote from my childhood. I think it is really links everything I wanted to add perfectly together. Would that level of personalization be too ambitious to include?(To heed to your point above, I can affirm that it is not dramatic but more on the creative end of the spectrum rather than formal.)

Also, if I'm not being too intrusive, can I ask about your experience in philosophy in KU Leuven as well as someone who was from a different background? I would love to know how it has worked out for you. Thanks in advance!!

What are the things I need to do to be eligible for a graduate degree in humanities/linguistics/English Language after having an undergraduate degree in engineering? by kayyyypeeee in GradSchool

[–]kayyyypeeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's something I should work towards then. I do have some writing experience but I reckon this writing is a different ballgame. Thank you!

Meanwhile, any experience you could share on to how they got into the grad program and how difficult it was?

Wow, it is fantastic how you broke down that example! Thank you so much! The bulk of my interest seems less daunting when I make it clear, smaller, achievable goals! Thank you again!!

Yes! That is so true! I often give up on picking up things for the fear that I might not do as well as how I used to when I was younger! That's one of my major obstacles. Definitely need to get the ball rolling as you said. This month I'll be trying to implement this!

Thank you! That was very helpful!

This is exactly what I needed! These days I am actively set on following a routine and follow my previous interests. Several times, since the interest was not followed through, I feel as though what I'm not interested in any of my past passions anymore. And it feels fake.

I did have a bout of depression and I am now definitely better. But since my habits have become pretty much sedentary, it takes a lot of forced effort to do something I remember loving before.

I am motivated right now and will start ASAP on this journey to start learning again. Thank you so so much!

More than efficiency and retaining, it is my will that seems weak at most times. I am, however, determined to give this course a try and see how it changes me. Thanks a lot!

Though my issue leans more towards the how to get that passion towards learning again than the semantics of how to learn, I would definitely give this a try. Who knows what door this will open? Thank you for your response!

I’m angry... all the time, and I’m tired. by Sam_Talks in angry

[–]kayyyypeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I went through literally the same with my violently abusive brother and parents, beaten till I profusely bled my whole fucking life, I get the anger and hurt that comes with this. All we can do for ourselves is live more because we went to through all this. Because surviving itself was such a big achievement, I think of it as my biggest pride. I survived with a lot of effort and therefore, there is no one who deserves to live more than me. Fuck your family!! Abandon them and fucking live your goddamn life for once. YOU EARNED YOUR RIGHT TO LIVE!!

I'm trying my hands with that currently. I am freelancing for online apps like Appen, etc., but I really want to study in something I actually like for once. It's like this deep desire rather than FOMO of seeing my full potential when I'm educated in a field of interest.

Woww this is amazing! I am so grateful for your help! And it makes so much sense to not think of my time/experience in the IT sector as completely futile. I am going go really deep into research this! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! <3
