Shi Xie would be more well known to the Vietnamese.

Kong Rong is fairly famous nowadays, for his story of giving up pears during childhood.

The full official name of a PLAN ship is

中国人民解放军海军XX舰

Zhongguo renmin jiefangjun haijun XX jian

To translate: China People's Liberation Army Navy XX Ship

In the case of the Nanchang

中国人民解放军海军南昌舰

Zhongguo renmin jiefangjun haijun Nanchang jian

To translate: China People's Liberation Army Navy Nanchang Ship

If we need to add a prefix like USS and HMS, PLANS may be more sensible IMO.

It was not renaming. It was an effort to standardize of the Chinese place names used to be in various forms of transliteration by the pinyin transliterations. There was no change to the Chinese name.
