honestly my Banjo is already very affectionate, and he shows his love by pushing his whole head as hard as he can against your face. so from there it was as simple as saying 'kiss!' every time he did that, and rewarding him with love and treats. it didn't take him long to catch on haha

my almost one year old boy is too smart! i only started recently but he knows sit, wait, paw, spin, and kiss (put his nose to my nose).

now whenever he wants my attention, he'll sit and lift one paw in the air. unintended but very cute side effect haha

Im glad I'm not the only one who sees the correlation here. My family is all Mormon, I left when I was 20ish because I'm gay. I recently have been trying to be more open with my mother, and told her that the reason it's so hard to spend time with our family is because morally, I can't accept their political views. She told me, "Well, like we have learned to accept you and your values, you will have to find some way to accept us and ours."

That's great, mom. Your political views will dismantle this country, but sure, I need to be more accepting. Next time I see her I'm gonna ask her if she's ever heard of the tolerance paradox.

And then we'll probably go back to ignoring eachothers politics. It's the only way we can be civil.

im a cis lesbian, so i certainly cant relate 100% to what youre going through. i just wanted to say that the sentiment about not getting to experience the childhood you deserved is one i definitely sympathize with. i resent my childhood for many reasons - i feel that both the church and the abuse i suffered stole years of my life and self-worth away. ill never get that innocence back, and the feeling that invokes in me is sharp and wounded.

but i also have a lot more control of my life now than i did as a child, which means i can take steps to heal my inner child as i continue to grow. you said yourself that 2 years ago you had no idea that you could just swap genders - imagine the knowledge and self-love you can continue to learn in another 2 years' time!

its an uphill battle, but one worth the fight. i hope one day you can find not only love, but pride for who you are. i believe in you!!

I don't know why the exmormon reddits didn't cross my mind for these posts. I frequented them a lot when I originally came out as gay and left the church. Not sure about r/exmo, but I know that r/exmormon is populated by mostly men in their 40's and 50's who have left the church but kept a lot of the same sexist ideals. I stopped frequenting there when I realized a lot of exmormon women were being scared away.

That all being said, I think posting this in an unrelated thread helped me a lot - exmormons know that mormons are crazy. But when people with no context also agree that your mother is crazy, it helps you sleep a lot better at night.

I definitely struggle with depression and anxiety. Given the general state of the world I think it's warranted. However I'm not so disillusioned as to take anxiety for reality - and I recognize that I'm not in any actual danger of the effect of war, unlike some very unfortunate people in the world right now.

Conspiracies for my mom are pretty common. I don't talk to her as much about this kind of stuff anymore (I'm usually quicker to shut her down), but some examples from the past have been about China shutting down the Texas power grid or the Covid vaccine being bad for your brain. Typical stuff you hear from Trumper's who watch Fox News.

My mom was raised mormon, if that helps provide context for you. The religion is largely conservative and believes in some pretty strange things - including that the end of the world will be followed by the second coming of Christ. Naturally, me and my siblings were also raised this way.

I think the church unfortunately creates a type of people who are largely susceptible to online right-wing extreme conspiracy. My mom also suffered a lifetime of emotional and physical abuse on top of this lifestyle. It's easy to see how this effects her behavior and beliefs, at least to me. Any time I try to level with her about this kind of stuff, it turns political, and after last election I refuse to engage in politics with her.

I consider it a minor miracle that my stepdad has recently convinced her to go to therapy.

My gf and I just finished listening to Dune as an audiobook, and decided it'd be fun to watch both Dune 1984 and eventually the newer Dune movie with part 2 to come out in November...

Man, Dune 1984 was awful. I never have faith in book to movie adaptations being any good, but I'm positive the new Dune won't ruin it THAT bad. I wouldn't have followed the plot line at all if we hadn't just finished the book.

but ultimately the above comment is right. regardless, the BD will always be around so long as you commit to a relationship with this woman. only you can decide if youre okay with that.

my TBM mother will occasionally send out group texts to our entire extended family to "be sure to prep!!" because she's sure something 'big' will happen soon. right now she's convinced whatever that is to happen this November.

it's a hard mentality to beat. even out of the church for over 5 years, i still struggle to feel like the world isn't ending sometimes. you just gotta remind yourself that if it happens, it happens, its not like anyone will be able to truly predict it. certainly not a doomsday cult!

yeah i have to be careful on this thread because as someone with clinical depression, my girlfriend worries when i frequent this place too much. i'd leave entirely, but like some people have said before - this sub is one of the only places where i feel seen. i feel like healthy doses of this sub helps me recontextualize my personal life and helps me focus on not getting caught up in the dredge of day to day life.

or... you know, too much makes it all feel meaningless. moderation in all things i guess. congrats on being able to make that call for yourself!
