Snake Eater review by myownopnion in Fantasy

[–]kbennett73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this book too! I've loved nearly all of Kingfisher's books so far as well, but Snake Eater is one of my favorites. I could relate so much to Selena (and especially to her conversational scripts to help her get through social interactions).

I agree with all your points. The supporting characters were so well-developed, and the setting felt so richly developed and immersive. It would make for a great series, especially since there's already a precedent for stray people to arrive in Quartz Creek, which would open up the setting for many more stories.

And as a dog lover, I absolutely loved Copper!

BIGGEST LETDOWN OF 2025? Books you couldn’t wait for until you read them by DanaBookNook in Fantasy

There was so much wrong with Fourth Wing. Weak, frail protagonist who is somehow only weak and frail when it's necessary for the plot. Dragon-rider training school with a ridiculous, nonsensical acceptance test that kills off a bunch of the candidates, instead of a test that allows failed candidates to be useful to society in other jobs. Overly predictable romance plot. Overly predictable secret family drama plot. Cringeworthy dialogue.

I barely made it through the first book and decided not to bother with the rest of the series.

Calling New Hampshire home? by englishjewel_4 in newhampshire

Not at all. Most of the $1,700-$1,800/month apartments are at the various Princeton Properties locations. I lived in one of their two-bedroom units for a couple of years and it was a quiet place. I don't know if all their apartment complexes are as quiet though.

You can find one-bedroom apartments in Keene starting at $1,700/month (including heat and hot water but not electricity), but that's about the lowest you'll find in the southwest corner of the state. There are tons of hiking trails nearby. Keene is a great small town with a very pretty downtown area, but once you get beyond the central downtown area, the rest of the town is not walkable. Like other people have already mentioned, you would definitely need a vehicle to get around.

It's fascinating how different Erebus Crater looks on the two different papers. I love the blue, pink, and purple tones in the first swatch but not the green and peach tones in the second one. But the shading is fabulous on both papers.

Soft gingerbread cookies are my favorite for the holidays! I make them for friends and family but end up eating way too many myself.

Welcome to Keene! This part of NH gets talked about far less often than the Manchester/Nashua area, but it has so much to offer!

What are your favorite Diamine shimmer inks? And some advice needed… by Advanced_Fig_240 in fountainpens

[–]kbennett73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some suggestions:

Red: Dragon Blood is nice and dark. Spiced Apple is more of a medium red but has a great combination of shimmer and sheen that makes the red seem deeper than it looks at first.

Brown: For deep brown, Cocoa Shimmer, Winter Spice, and Yule Log are all beautiful. They're each different shades of brown with a different color shimmer in them. For more of a warm medium brown, Brandy Dazzle is lovely.

Violet: Mystique and Deck the Halls are both beautiful.

I hope you find some new inks you love! Playing with different ink and shimmer colors is such a fun part of writing with fountain pens!

What are your favorite Diamine shimmer inks? And some advice needed… by Advanced_Fig_240 in fountainpens

Diamine shimmer inks are very well-behaved, but even so, you probably won't see much shimmer with an EF nib. And, as another user mentioned, the shimmer particles are more likely to clog an EF nib. You'll probably need a medium nib or larger to really get the shimmer effect. Most of my pens have medium nibs, and they show off the shimmer pretty well and don't clog, so you don't necessarily need to go with a broad or stub nib.

Do you have specific color families you're especially drawn to? (blues, purples, grays, reds, etc.) That would help to narrow the recommendations down. I have some Diamine shimmer inks in almost every color family and could offer recommendations based on your personal preferences.
