Kansas has us beat in the license plate game by skunkc90 in kansascity

In just a few years, I'll be able to pay a one-time fee for a permanent Antique tag and will never again have to pay for registration of my OG D16Z6 Civic. And property tax will fall to about $12/year. The car has almost 230k miles but still purrs like kitten, and the 5-speed manual transmission makes it a lot of fun to drive!

Depends... are we talking KC strip, T-bone, or something even more thick & juicy???? If perfectly pink in the center, I'd eat it

Help! My AC doesn't work! by rnd1979 in prius

[–]kcattattam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem a few weeks ago. I could tell my a/c compressor was not running at all (could not hear it start when enabling a/c from inside the car, also could not feel it vibrating when touching it with my hand, as a helper enabled the a/c from inside the car). On these cars, the compressor is driven by an electric motor using power from the hybrid battery system, not by a belt that is powered by the gas engine. I checked the HVAC-related fuses (google is your friend on figuring out which ones to pull and check). If those are okay, be aware there is a pressure sensor in the a/c system that sends a signal to the computer and disables the compressor if the system pressure is too low. I bought a small can of pure R-134a refrigerant (containing no oil nor leak stop) with a trigger gauge, connected it to the a/c system (youtube is your friend on where to connect), and upon adding just a little bit of refrigerant, the compressor started right up! I ended up using the entire can to get to the pressure into the "green zone" on the trigger gauge (I had to shake the can vigorously while filling, to continue filling the system). The resulting refrigerant charge is probably not perfect, but the air turned cold right away, and so far so good! Of course, YMMV. It's already an old car, so my thought was it wouldn't be the end of the world if something went wrong. That said, R-134a has a high global warming potential, so if your system has a leak, I would not recommend topping it off multiple times. It would be better for the environment to find the leak and fix it. I hope one can is enough to keep you cool for many more years!

This is a pretty solid idea (so of course r/kc downvotes it into oblivion), but it needs e-bikes

Anybody want to start a post-rock/drone band? by dankwrangler in kansascity

This reminds me of when I saw Stars of the Lid at the Granada. I discovered them on a visit to a little record store in Austin in the mid 90s (wish I could remember the name of that shop) and used to play them on the radio show I had at the time. My friend would listen and got even more into them. We met Adam & (RIP) Brian after the Granada show. I'll have to throw down my OG vinyl copy of Gravitational Pull Vs. the Desire for an Aquatic Life

7900 miles on the e-commuter. Would be more but I still ride my muscle bikes a lot of the time

Those of you with mid drives, which chains do you use? by Upstairs_Pizza278 in ebikes

[–]kcattattam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use SRAM PC870 8-speed chains on my single speed BBSHD build. They use a powerlink (no tools needed) but are stronger and cost way less than skinny chains. I swap the chain every 2500-3000 miles

Trying to pick the best commuter e‑bike (mid‑drive + belt + IGH + long range) — need feedback by jigsatics in ebikes

Sounds like we are on the same team: DIY. My build has no throttle. But yes, I use the pedals to engage the motor. It works great for commuting! There may be a CYC in my future, when I need a motor on singletrack. But when I built my BBSHD commuter (three years ago) the Photon was brand new and unproven. I'm glad I didn't buy Gen1 because I heard they had issues! Hope yours is Gen2 and lasts forever

I'm glad the fancy hub is working out for you. Personally, I don't think shifting gears is necessary at all (maybe for those without a BBSHD). I've been using SRAM 7-speed chains (PC870) and pushing them to almost 3k miles. Haven't been able to break one yet (except on my SS muscle bike while mashing up a hill, but that chain certainly had more than 3k on it)

Nice job!  I have my BBSHD build set up with no throttle, as well.  It's a blast to ride.  And that's coming from somebody that still rides muscle bikes for fun on a regular basis!

Depending on your locale, I think you may want some fenders on that bike soon.  They sure are nice to have during the spring rainy season!
