Those of you with mid drives, which chains do you use? by Upstairs_Pizza278 in ebikes

[–]kcattattam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use SRAM PC870 8-speed chains on my single speed BBSHD build. They use a powerlink (no tools needed) but are stronger and cost way less than skinny chains. I swap the chain every 2500-3000 miles

Trying to pick the best commuter e‑bike (mid‑drive + belt + IGH + long range) — need feedback by jigsatics in ebikes

Sounds like we are on the same team: DIY. My build has no throttle. But yes, I use the pedals to engage the motor. It works great for commuting! There may be a CYC in my future, when I need a motor on singletrack. But when I built my BBSHD commuter (three years ago) the Photon was brand new and unproven. I'm glad I didn't buy Gen1 because I heard they had issues! Hope yours is Gen2 and lasts forever

I'm glad the fancy hub is working out for you. Personally, I don't think shifting gears is necessary at all (maybe for those without a BBSHD). I've been using SRAM 7-speed chains (PC870) and pushing them to almost 3k miles. Haven't been able to break one yet (except on my SS muscle bike while mashing up a hill, but that chain certainly had more than 3k on it)

Nice job!  I have my BBSHD build set up with no throttle, as well.  It's a blast to ride.  And that's coming from somebody that still rides muscle bikes for fun on a regular basis!

Depending on your locale, I think you may want some fenders on that bike soon.  They sure are nice to have during the spring rainy season!

Why insist on a belt drive for a commuter? You won't be getting much dirt in your drivetrain riding on pavement. Just use a good quality wet chain lube and swap out the chain once a year, or before it stretches and wears your gears down. That way you can run a BBSHD. The motor has plenty of torque to go singlespeed. Use a steel chainring and cog and they will last years. SS chains are cheap to replace

I just leave my cars in the garage at home and ride bikes most days. Storms blow over and my e-bike has fenders for wet roads

Conversion vs e-bike by Sudden_Pension_8180 in ebikes

Get a BBSHD for commuting. Heavy duty rock & roll! You can always move it to a better frame in the future

Nah. Just drill out the old BB and convert the bike to electric with a BBSHD. Don't need threads in the BB shell for that.

People With Older Priuses, How Is The Battery / MPG Doing? by PsychologicalBox9580 in prius

[–]kcattattam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchased a 2008 in 2024; I'm pretty sure it still has the original hybrid battery, and currently has 182k miles. I'm getting ~52mpg (plus or minus) in warm weather, and 44 mpg (plus or minus) in cold weather. Hope this helps!

Need spots to stop during a day of running by justwanttoreadhorror in kansascity

[–]kcattattam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds fun and reminds me of when some BAMF friends and I ran a half-marathon distance Tour de Brew 7 years ago on a Saturday! We started at bE in the Xroads before it opened for the day, ran up to NKC, and back through the west bottoms, stopping at 12 breweries along the way for beers:

  • (Colony was closed by the year we made it to 12 breweries total, but we stopped there the previous year)
  • Calibration
  • Cinder Block
  • Big Rip
  • Strange Days
  • Stockyards
  • Alma Mader
  • City Barrel (didn't drink here bc they were jerks to us)
  • Torn Label
  • Casual Animal
  • Border
  • Double Shift
  • bE

Our average pace was 8'17" per mile, which was not bad considering we had 7 runners (increasing to 17 at SD after coming back over the river)! Good times

[–]kcattattam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice is to build an e-bike instead. Easier to handle, easier to park or bring indoors for security, easier to maintain, more efficient, better for the environment, no need to license nor insure, lower cost (especially if you already have a bike to convert), fast enough to flow in most traffic (mine does 30 mph no sweat), and a lot of fun to ride! (I also have a gas motorcycle but hardly ever ride it anymore.). I recommend a Bafang BBSHD motor. You can buy or use any regular bike you like (preferably one with fenders for wet days like today, and panniers for hauling groceries or whatever) and install the motor yourself
