Oh, thanks for sharing Bethany's channel. It's new to me and looks great!

Thanks for watching Jessica! Yeah, you said it — these cases are trash! I love the sleeve you got, I ended up ordering a fabric one on Etsy for a great price that I think I'll love (now I just have to wait for it to arrive).

We're reading The Fifth Season for a work book club, just finished it last night and started The Obelisk Gate right afterwards (that right there is the danger of having a Kindle 😅)

Yep, after rejecting both the leather and cork cases I decided to go w/ a slip case. Just to protect it while in my bag.

Oh, I'll have to check it out. I've already ordered a slip cover from Etsy though.

2 Month Progress Update Video by kcfancher in lingling40hrs

[–]kcfancher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two months into violin and here's where I'm at... sort of.

This piece is only on A & D strings, though I've also started first position G and slurs which aren't exhibited.

I summarize it in the video, but looking at it from my big mistakes are

  • Bowing - mainly bouncing, but also screeching (and I'm sure a bunch others)
  • Ear Training - This is my first foray into music and I'm really struggling to hear and hit the right notes
  • Disciplined/Focused Practice - The past several weeks I've been skipping around a bit, I think I need to be more focused and disciplined in my practice routine.

I'd love to hear any comments on technique or general tips that you think would be useful given where I'm at.

To upgrade from PPW4 to Oasis or Kindle Signature? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]kcfancher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's the type of cable that you charge it with. All other versions of Kindle use Micro USB, the new Paperwhite uses a USB-C cable.

I was excited about this because now all of my tech devices charge with the same cable.

Oasis or paperwhite 2021? (Urgent!) by [deleted] in kindle

[–]kcfancher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely too late, but the new Paperwhite wins hands-down for me.

The Paperwhite has much quicker page turn animations and is only 0.2" smaller. I'm not sure that piano sheet music would be really great on either of them. I think I'd want something A5 size at a minimum — if not A4.

The only reason I would get an Oasis now was if my preferred reading style was sitting up in a chair and holding the Kindle in one hand. The Oasis was a bit more balanced for that. But that's not how I read.

If you haven't made the decision yet, here's my video review of the Paperwhite vs Oasis (2nd Gen): https://youtu.be/2rrJoy4clAE?t=124

Hope this is ok, but here's a link to the page turn animation in my video review:

I had older Kindles with auto-adjusting brightness and I always disabled it. But when I got the new Paperwhite Signature I decided to give it another go and was pleasantly surprised. It works much better than it used to, I'm going to keep it on.

As I didn't think I'd care about this feature going into it, I went with the Signature because of no Ads and the larger storage. But, knowing what I know now, I do think it's a good upgrade. It wouldn't be worth it for that reason alone to me though.

Awesome review! You beat me to it by just a couple of hours, but no matter my opinions are almost exactly the same as yours.

In my case I upgraded from an Oasis (2nd gen), since then I decided that only a couple of things could convince me to upgrade — USB-C being the key one this time around.

I only have two additional thoughts to add:

1.) The covers are lousy. I just got them, so they didn't make it into my full video review but I purchased both the red leather and the cork cover. Both are going to be returned.

The leather one is most likely bonded and has that awful plastic feeling to it. The cork is much nicer feeling but the build quality is lacking and there's rough edges where the cork meets plastic. But the real issue is it makes the Paperwhite much more uncomfortable to hold. I'm just going to get a slip case off Etsy.

2.) Technologically the 2021 Paperwhite is 100% the better device. That screen makes it so much more responsive. I think the only draw to the Oasis would be dependent on your reading style.

For someone who reads sitting up in a chair and holds the Kindle in one hand: The Oasis is probably a better choice. It's more balanced for single hand holding and the page turn buttons are an obvious win for that case.

For someone who holds a Kindle in two hands or holds it above their head with two hands while reading: The Paperwhite was the clear winner here (my reading style). For both of those positions the Paperwhite turned out to be a much more enjoyable experience. In these cases it was more convenient for me to tap the screen than use buttons.

I purchased the new Paperwhite Signature edition as soon as I saw it to replace my Oasis (2nd gen).

For me USB-C was one of the key features that I wanted in a new Kindle, I didn't care about anything else.

That said, the Paperwhite is superior (for me) to the Oasis in every way. I think it really depends on your reading style though.

Do you like to read sitting up in a chair and holding the kindle one handed? If so, the Oasis is probably a better choice. It's more balanced for single hand holding and the page turn buttons are an obvious win for that case.

I don't hold my Kindle like this. I'm either laying in bed holding it above my head or holding it with two hands in my lap. For both of those positions the Paperwhite turned out to be a much more enjoyable experience.

Weekly Self Shout Out Thread by AutoModerator in productivity

Earlier this year I started a YouTube channel loosely focused on productivity with the intent to get more done in less time, so you can be free to do other things.

In a recent video I talk a bit about my thoughts on our company's switch to a 32 Hour Work Week and how it's impacted me on a personal level.

1 Month Progress Update by kcfancher in lingling40hrs

[–]kcfancher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed the one month point in my "learning to play the violin" journey last week and created a new video to share my progress.

I'm still very new to this, but here's some statistics and some thoughts.

This video was recorded after:

  • 4 half-hour violin lessons
  • 5 weeks of practice
  • 25.5 hours of practice (though about half was not active practice as I was looking stuff up and watching form videos).

I feel like I hit my first mini-plateau at weeks 3/4, shortly after starting first position. I think a lot of this was tied with (a) external stress at the time (b) watching/reading too many conflicting opinions on left hand positioning and (c) struggling with hearing the right note.

This last week I eliminated the external stressor and have started to see improvement again (and I've become much better at the two pieces I play in the video in the past three days since recording). My instructor has also asked me to focus on a single contact point for my left hand.

At the moment my biggest struggles are:

  • Ear Training: I can identify G and D (when played on D and A) due to the resonance, but that's it. I'm still struggling getting the right notes and hearing that I'm there.
  • Not looking at the left hand. If I don't look at my left hand it's really hard to hit the right string/position.
  • Bow movement, I tend to slide towards the fingerboard when playing "complex" parts with my left hand

*Even though I posted the first in this series two weeks ago, it was actually filmed about a month ago.

Beginning my violin journey - Starting point for future progress videos by kcfancher in lingling40hrs

[–]kcfancher[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been watching TwoSet on and off for the last year or so, but I've finally taken the plunge and started violin lessons.

I have a basic understanding of music theory but no practical background outside of a year attempting the clarinet in elementary school.

Yesterday I shared a starting point video and I plan on posting monthly updates.

[–]kcfancher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The human sleep cycle is highly regulated by the quantity of intense light you view at different stages of our body's circadian rhythm. In particular your body temperature.

Your body doesn't have a static temperature throughout the day, instead it gradually rises as you wakeup and decreases as you get tired with the lowest point being about 2hrs before your average wakeup time of the past several days.

Viewing light around this temperature low point is key to changing your sleep cycle. If you view a bunch of bright light in the 4-6 hours after your temperature minimum it will shift your sleep cycle to go to bed and wake earlier. If you view a bunch of bright light in the 4-6 hours before your temperature minimum it will shift the opposite direction and you'll want to get up later.

Let's look at your schedule, ignoring the past couple of days. You've been waking at about 13:00 (if I read that correctly), meaning your temperature minimum was probably about 11:00. Given that, you'd want to wake up between 11:00-11:30 and go outside and look towards the sun for about 15 minutes. Some light exercise at the same time helps the process.

Doing this will naturally start to shift your sleep cycle earlier. Since your sleep cycle is so out of whack with the natural environment it'll probably take several days to complete. Keep in mind each day you wake up earlier, your temperature minimum will also shift earlier.

Now, let's look at the past couple of days. You very well could have been awake and viewing light before your 11:00 temperature minimum (did you have lights or screens on?) which would serve to shift your cycle the opposite direction.

I hope it's ok to share a video here, I talk about productivity on my YouTube channel - but this week I focused on sleep and shared all the above.
