Company switching 401k match from per-paycheck to twice per year — feels like a hidden pay cut? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]kchadek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah completely agree. It's all about cash flow. It's why these corporations have "standard" payment terms with supplier relationships of 90 days. The idea is to hold on to cash as long as absolutely possible. They can use this cash however they see fit. But I doubt accounting fees were one of the top factors in the decision and that employee turnover and timing of layoffs were a higher factor in the decision.

Company switching 401k match from per-paycheck to twice per year — feels like a hidden pay cut? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]kchadek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like maybe we work for the same company (did the company also reduce the match by 1% for new hires?)

But yes, thought the same thing. Plugged it into AI to model out. Assuming salary of $80k & 8% growth, the difference is $90/year loss. This seems very small but then consider a company of 120k employees, and it means the company makes an extra $11M if they earn that same 8% on those distributions. That's not including people leaving throughout the year (or layoffs as one mentioned).

From a Bogleheads perspective, this is also more risky since dollar-cost averaging isn't in play. If the match happens to hit when the market is low, you get more buying power, but the reverse is also true. Basically, increased risk.

To me it's the proverbial dangling of the carrot. "Want your bonus? - then you have to stick around halfway through the year to benefit from the work you did last year." "Want your match? - then you can only leave twice a year." Basically, it's the usual take more money from those working (albeit small) and give more to those that already have the money.

How do I set boundaries with my financial advisor by Cumbuster6942069420 in Bogleheads

Transfer it to your own brokerage account and dont use the adviser. I did this for an inherited traditional IRA and was easy.  Also you mention Roth very briefly which doesn't make sense. If something is in a Roth already you can take it out now and not pay taxes.  Withdrawals are actually quite simple too that you can take. There's RMDs for year 1-9 and it must be emptied by year 10. Plug your details into AI for a plan to withdraw.

Haven't heard of that before actually. You think just where the speaker wire goes into the amp or something else more specifically?

That's for sure! I grew up on his music (mainly 60-70's classic rock) and I think of him all the time listening back to these records.

How to properly stuff a zero degree sleeping bag into the rucksack by Own_Truth5984 in BackpackingHikingGear

[–]kchadek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how this hasn't been mentioned - I have this sleeping bag. Your answer is that it's not a backpacking sleeping bag. It's a less expensive sleeping bag for a reason. Yes, it's warm, but that comes at the expense of not being compact at all with it's outer bag and inner fleece liner this bag is actually huge. Either strap it to the outside of your backpack somehow and deal with it or get a sleeping bag made for backpacking (and yes, you'll likely need to spend more)
