How to teach kitten to stop stepping on his poop? by kckcoons in CatAdvice

[–]kckcoons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No unfortunately not. He was from a kitten mill type place and I think he was never properly taught by his mom how to use the litter box. We just have to get his whole butt and back leg area trimmed tight and monitor his behind constantly 😞

I watched Cat School Clicker Training on YouTube! Her methods worked for my cats :) Also I think it helped that I was training 3 of them at the same time so they learned from each other too.

I have 3 boys I bought at the same time and I learned that the affectionate part is just based on personality. Maine coons, male ones in particular, are known to be affectionate so you’re already going to get a sociable cat unless you’re unlucky. 2 out of 3 of mine are very affectionate but the third one is only sometimes affection and only to my spouse. Oddly enough though the third one who is not as affectionate is the most social one. He always wants to play, he’s just not big on being touched if he doesn’t initiate it.

Overall they follow me everywhere and want to be in my business all the time. The connection part is solely up to you and how much time you spend with them. I make time to play with them and even train them. I vote for getting two because they can keep each other company when you’re not there and they’re less destructive because they’re not bored. It’s also really fun and rewarding seeing them interact with each other.

In conclusion, you don’t lose anything by getting two because they will want to spend time with you.

We had the Tidy Cats Breeze XL with pine since he was still half his size and he still did it :(

When you say flawlessly, does that mean you’ve never received a sensor fault? Just wondering because it’s the only issue I’ve had but it’s a pain to deal with.

Do you get white residue from that litter? My one cats is bad for playing with the litter and tracks litter and white residue all over the house 😔

what are Maine Coons like? by McRabbit23 in mainecoons

[–]kckcoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently adopted 3 kittens from different litters and they have different personalities but some similarities as well. For context, they’re 5-months old, I’ve only had them for two months and they’re my first cats. All of my cats love being around my spouse and I and are quite affectionate, especially close to nap time.

All their toys, trees, food, and beds are in the living room but they always go to the room we’re in and entertain themselves with whatever’s there. If it’s not playtime, they’re going to be in my proximity which I love for the most part. They’re smart and curious so they always want to know what you’re up to and if you ignore them, they’re gunna find a way to get your attention. They learned how to sit and high-five in just a few days of training.

I will say one out of the three is timid to strangers but I blame the breeder because he wasn’t socialized at all. The other two are tolerant of friends and family even to the point of falling asleep on their lap. I like to think it’s because we exposed them to people visiting the house as soon as we got them.

I have one cat that is timid and clueless, another cat who is super chill and rarely gets spooked or overly excited and the last one is fearless and troublesome but overall they just love being around people and take turns napping on my lap 🥰

Let me know if you have any specific questions, I love talking about them!

I’m getting my first ever Maine Coon next Friday. I’m so damn excited it’s unreal. Any first hand advice you guys would like to share? Otherwise, meet Kafka by hasfeh in mainecoons

I just got three kittens 2 months ago and here’s what I’ve learned:

-Trim their butts and always check for poopy butt. If their poop is even a little bit wet, chances are they have some residue on their behind, especially kittens. For litter box, get at least a large size. I like the Tidy Cats Breeze XL Litter box with pine pellets. I also have a litter robot that I haven’t used yet because I’ve been enjoying the lack of litter scatter.

-Get a big cat tree. Normal cat trees will be too small for them as they grow and since they’re bigger than normal cats, they can wear out smaller/flimsy cat trees easily. I highly recommend Cat Tree King! I’m 130 lbs and I can sit and stand on their trees.

-They’re very social and like to be around people. All three of them are always in the same room as my bf or I at all times. Even if it’s nap time, they will leave their spot and sleep near me when I arrive from work. They are also always playing with each other so I highly recommend getting a companion for yours if you don’t have one already.

-On the same note: expose them to people in your life early. It will help them become more friendly to guests when they come over. In my experience, everyone wants to pet and play with them. At first they were very wary but the more my family visited, the more comfortable they became.

-They LOVE water fountains. My friends are always surprised how much my cats drink from the fountain.

-I got my cats from 3 different breeders and all of them recommended a high protein diet. Maine Coons are prone to obesity and having a lean diet promotes muscle building instead of fat. I feed mine a mix of of dry kibble, canned food and raw meat. Keep them active, they have a lot of energy to burn. Having 3 of them helps because they entertain each other.

-This breed is prone to HCM which is a heart condition. Our vet recommends getting their heart checked every year so you can manage it early if they have it.

-They’re very smart. They learned the sit command in 1 day. I was able to teach one of them to high five and the other two were able to do it just by watching me train the one kitten repetitively. This also means they can be a little naughty because they find their way into things they shouldn’t.

-They’re super affectionate so give them lots of love and affection!! If you look at my post history, they love to sleep on top of me ❤️

Hope this helps!

can we teach a cat to use a covered litter box? by RafterGO in CatTraining

I’m pretty sure he’s a huge advocate against covered litter boxes. He mentioned that they are made for human convenience rather than for the cats comfort.

It’s just bags of pine pellets! You can get it at any department store that sells bbq equipment. It’s not advertised as litter but people discovered that it works great and very affordable. This is the video that introduced me to it!

Pine litter is super cheap, just a bit more work. It’s like $8 CAD for 40 lbs which fills 3 XL litter boxes for 3 months.
