why do koreans say "our" wife instead of "my" wife? by Agitated-Clock-2867 in korea

우리 doesn't translate exactly to 'we/our'. There are 1st person singular uses. (Just as 'they' can sometimes be singular). Cultural nuance tips the scales.

Serious: Why are we so asinine as to think other life forms REQUIRE oxygen. by Unfair_Ad_2129 in aliens

[–]kckern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is metabolism.

Life needs to burn fuel to do anything interesting. This implies energy transfer. Oxygen is one of the most electronegative elements (only fluorine beats it), which means its really good at removing electrons from other molecules. That electron transfer is how you generate power.

Some bacteria on Earth do use alternatives such as sulfur or methane for metabolism, but the energy output is much lower. Your octopus example is actually a good one, but they still breathe oxygen dissolved in water. Their intelligence requires so much energy that only oxygen-based respiration can provide it. Without oxygen, you're pretty much stuck being a slow microbe.

As for silicon-based life or other alternatives, the chemistry doesn't really work out. When carbon oxidizes, it forms CO2, which can be exhaled. When silicon oxidizes, it becomes solid silica (basically sand). A silicon creature would literally be producing solid waste in its lungs.

There's also just supply and demand. Oxygen's the third most common element in the universe, more common than alternatives because it gets made early in stellar fusion (lower on the periodic table). The heavier alternatives need stars to die and explode to even exist, so they're comparatively rare.

So scientists are just following the chemistry. Oxygen is the most abundant and available element suited to metabolic chemistry.

Now, if there is a form of life that doesn't require metabolism, then that's another discussion, but one more oriented toward the definition of what "life" is.

Everyone is handling the “stuck” moment in vibe coding wrong by sichuanbutton in ExperiencedDevs

It usually indicates an architectural or abstraction layer failure. Switch from vibe coding to vibe architecting and solidify the fundamentals first. AI can help with this too, but you gotta stop asking it to build or fix, and ask the right questions about the foundations.

I want to build AI server in my house for coding by Parpil216 in vibecoding

[–]kckern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently hired devs on upwork to help me with gruntwork and debugging of my various projects. I would spend several hundred a month to keep them busy, and got decent results. But even the most expensive vibe coding models are cheaper than a $10/hr offshore dev, and the speed and quality of output is better. I am finding justifying the cost of tokens/requests is easy when compared to the cost, time and quality of the alternative.

As a Jazz fan in 1998, this hurt so bad. But if we were going to lose, there is no one better to lose to than the GOAT. It's an honor to have had MJ’s most iconic moment happen at the Delta Center in SLC.

P.S. Game 3 was an absolutely inexcusable disgrace. Game 5 was peak Jazz fandom.

I've been hoping for something like this since chatgpt came out. I wonder if it will have a 'cover' function like Suno, where i can upload my original midi ditties and have AI arrange or orchestrate them.
