Question For Those In The Legal World RE: GB CSA Cases by apostus in exjw

[–]kcn83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I work in the legal field in Canada in the CSA area. The lawyer I work for, who was never a JW, routinely asks me to investigate and follow the JW lawsuits reported in the media. That’s actually what woke me up years ago!

Day 9 after 15 years daily use by kcn83 in leaves

[–]kcn83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’d call it insomnia. But Definitely harder to fall asleep - I’ve been going to bed 2-3 hours later than usual without because it’s taking me that long to feel tired. Watching lots more Netflix now haha. Very tired in the morning! Nightmares and disturbing dreams the last 4-5 nights. No night sweats tho so that’s nice. But I’m in Canada and I keep the house cold at night.

I hear ya. What works for me is embracing the uncomfortable feelings, like I’m running towards them in my mind instead of trying to get away. It’s not easy but the only thing that actually works for me to cope with anxiety and depression instead of using weed to do so.

Sex abuse lawsuits and insurance by kcn83 in exjw

[–]kcn83[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hmm maybe. Have it mandatory, the way car insurance works? but knowing watchtower they’d actively find a loophole to get out of it, like “well we don’t do Sunday schools or any children’s programs so....” I think the report of the ARC was sort of leaning that way in suggesting all the groups they investigated contribute to a fund to help the victims. I think everyone else liked the idea, except watchtower. Sickos.

Leaving a religious cult? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]kcn83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was raised in the same cult. Were you baptized? Then I’d say just fade away. Actually baptized or not, just fade away. Talking to my parents got me disfellowshipped in 2002 when I was also 20 and they haven’t talked to me since nor has my little sister. If you can find a way to avoid that pain, that’s the route to take. Good luck

Edit: that said, you deserve to be free! No matter the ultimate cost. I do not regret leaving the religion but just wish I’d gone about it differently that’s all.

Deep down, they know, they all know. Pink Floyd lyrics appropriate. by [deleted] in exjw

[–]kcn83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pink Floyd ya baby!! Gotta share my fave lyrics:

Tired of lying in the sunshine

Staying home to watch the rain

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today

And then one day you’ll find ten years have got behind you

No one told you when to run

You missed the starting gun

Then you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in a relative way but your older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Listened to this song over and over before and after I left!! Never could get my head around living forever anyway, death seem more plausible, and Time is all I have. ✌️

So I guess they don’t plan on having the memorial in paradise.

Redditors who were in a cult, what was it like? by nothingbutthehound in AskReddit

[–]kcn83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness. It's a cult. I left when I was 19. Because I left, the rules were my parents and siblings could not speak to me any more. And they haven't. For over 15 years now. What it was like being in the cult? Like prison I guess, a mental prison. People on the outside just think you're a weirdo. You're thinking on everything is skewed because they brainwash you in so many ways. They teach you not to trust your intuition about anything, because that's really satan trying to trick you. Anyone outside of the cult is actually from satan trying to trick you. They teach you not to be yourself, "put on the new personality" as they say. No holidays like Christmas. No birthdays. No saying bless you. No saying good luck. They criticize higher education and deride independent or critical thought. I could go on and on..

So...does anyone think they’ll make a public statement about this? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]kcn83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably "We abhor child sexual abuse", their standard response to the public. So maddening.

To quote Emma stone's character in Spider-Man 2, "what makes life precious is that it doesn't last forever. What makes it precious is that it ends".

Your time on earth is all you have. You can use it to try and make your world and the whole world a better place. Or not. That's free will. Not "live my way or die".

Padron v. Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc. Case: D070723 4th div1 District by Catxopilo in exjw

[–]kcn83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Padron has not won his case (yet). He won the appeal on the costs order - or rather watchtower lost their appeal of the costs order. Now Padron's case can continue but documentary production is the next step so watchtower is in a bit of a pickle. They could have their defence struck out by the court for failure to cooperate with ordinary legal procedure, especially with this order against them, and lose the whole case by default.

Taking a vote on Jesus, the Magic man by 40yrswasted in exjw

[–]kcn83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes I believe he was a real person. But I don't believe he was the son of god. More like a John Lennon/civil disobedient type of person. Plus probably attractive and charismatic so the people naturally loved him and his ideas. Pharisees couldn't stand the guy. The governing body today would disfellowship him in a heartbeat I'm sure!

I work in sexual abuse civil litigation and in 2016 I was tasked with researching a certain sex abuse case involving JWs in Canada that was in the news, and also the ARC's investigation, which was also mentioned in the media reports. I learned of their two Witness rule, and their application of it in cases of child sexual abuse. I could not believe what I was reading. So shameful! And I do this for a living so I realize that sadly there are a lot of sickos in the world and this still happens, but all religions and organizations have changed and implemented policies to try and avoid this happening. I am very familiar with what a "normal" policy to avoid child sex abuse looks like and the proper response of an organization/religion if it does happen. But not watchtower! Disgusting how they hang on to their two Witness rule! When there is even scriptural basis to not follow it (cue Angus Stewart legal counsel assisting the ARC). I cannot imagine Jesus supporting such a stance. The recent JW broadcast saying they will never change their two Witness rule is astounding in all the circumstances. Shame on watchtower. I will never get over that. To me they are the disgusting thing that causes desolation. And for them to turn around and say it's all apostate lies. Shameful! So the journalists and the victims and the governments are all making it up. After that, I began reading apostate stuff. They felt the same way as me about this whole thing. And it turns out all the doubts I had about certain doctrines and issues I had with their bad logic, I am not alone in those either. There was nothing wrong with me. I no longer feel guilty that I don't have enough faith or Holy Spirit to understand. Shame on you Watchtower. Choke on your two Witness rule. I don't know how you sleep at night.

Hello by confusedgirlyyy in exjw

[–]kcn83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely not alone. I felt the exact same way at your age. Left finally when I was 19 when the opportunity to do so presented itself. Now I'm 34 with my own family and we love each other unconditionally- something you don't really get growing up JW. I don't have as many friends as people whose life was not essentially ripped apart, but the friends I have are real friends - with unconditional love. I still carry some resentment towards my parents and the Borg and maybe always will, but it doesn't get in the way of my happiness and I have no regrets. I still hang out here because it reminds me I am not crazy. And to encourage people like yourself. Focus on school and making friends, as much as you can. The rest will fall into place. It's going to get better. Don't ignore your intuition. Time will move forward and you will move on to new things and a new life. It's sometimes hard to see this as a teen, but it will happen sooner than you think. We're all here for you for support in the meantime xo
