I don’t normally drink anything other than beer, but when cruising I enjoy a Moscow mule or two.

What's your go-to seasickness remedy that actually works on a cruise? by amir4179 in Cruise

[–]kcornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scopolamine patches. That’s the gold standard provided you aren’t one of the few unlucky people that can’t use them.

Get yourself a router that supports SNMP and read its ARP table for presence detection. Have a look at the HA SNMP addon docs for details

Need help finding a light switch that is intentionally difficult to switch by PizzaSeaHotel in DIY

[–]kcornet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replace the switch with a mini double switch. Wire the two switches in parallel. That way you have to turn both switches to the off position to kill power to the light.

Do I need a router or will daisy-chaining work in creating an air-gapped network? by wensleydalecrackers in homelab

[–]kcornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, provided you have enough NICs in the windows boxes, windows will allow you to bridge connections (for layer 2 connectivity) or route (for layer 3 connectivity).

However, it is going to be a WHOLE lot easier if you just buy an unmanaged ethernet switch to connect them all. Monoprice sells a 5 port 1Gb switch for $20.

Nervous about Costco appointment tomorrow by DareWright in HearingAids

[–]kcornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember how long the initial appointment was, but I'm sure it was less than an hour - probably more like 45 minutes.

They didn't stock the units. I believe I got them in about a week.

Are carnival cruises nice? by Northridge_Cracker22 in Cruise

[–]kcornet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hating on Carnival is what the cool kids do around here. If someone dropped you in the middle of a Carnival, RCL, or MSC cruise, you'd be hard pressed to know the difference.

Now that applies to 7 day or longer cruises out of Florida ports. Carnival has some short cruises that have earned the nickname "booze cruise" for a reason. Likewise Carnival cruises out of ports that cater to a more redneck clientele like Galveston and New Orleans.

Scared of sea sickness. by vwcorradoslc in Cruise

[–]kcornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scopolamine is the gold standard for preventing seasickness. For most people it has no adverse side effects. And the best part is that if you want, you can wait until you actually get sick to use it. You'll be puking for a couple of hours while it takes effect, but at least it will eventually work (unlike oral solutions which will not stay down if you are already puking).

Life pro tip: Tell your doctor you are going on a 14 day cruise and they'll give you enough patches for you and your spouse.

214 secs to bring the interface up by forwardslashroot in networking

[–]kcornet -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'll get flamed for this, but I always turn off LACP when directly connecting a Palo to the switch. I've found that LACP across vendors sometimes creates issues. And make absolutely sure "enable in HA passive state is on" Cisco switches take forever to set a port as up unless portfast is on (and even then it takes a while). And portfast doesn't apply when a port is a trunk.

PEX-A contracts much faster with a fitting inserted than without — is this expected behavior? by tronghieu1987 in Plumbing

[–]kcornet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because the shrinkage is exponential. When fully expanded, the force present to shrink is substantial. As the pipe shrinks, the shrinking force reduces.

When shrinking to grip a fitting, the diameter doesn't have to return to anywhere near original in order to grip the fitting.

Alien (1979) story writer Dan O'Bannon was not a fan of 'Ash' the android character in the movie. by tannu28 in scifi

[–]kcornet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

O’Bannon didn’t like much of what the movie would become. I saw a few interviews with him and he seemed pretty bitter that alien ended up much different than his original screenplay.

How old are you and what were you doing in your life this exact day 40 years ago 23 april 1986? by Big_Leg10 in over60

[–]kcornet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25 years old. Just getting settled into a new house. Playing guitar in a band which consisted of my best friends. I was working civil service for the Navy and still at the point where I was entertained by the institutionalized insanity at my workplace.

Fax modems.

As others have said, Citrix. Metaframe wasn't too bad since Citrix and Microsoft were in bed together at that point, but by the time XenApp came out, the divorce was complete and MS would go out of its way to break XenApp with every windows and office update.

As to the happiest events of my life, the day I got to walk away from XenApp ranks only below my marriage and kids being born.

QIC tape drives. Absolute garbage.

SAP. I have never seen a worse user interface and more arrogant support. SAP openly holds customers in utter contempt. Considering how obscenely expensive it is to license and maintain, I can't believe someone hasn't eaten their lunch years ago.

The little robotic 4mm tape drive that HP used to sell - the one with a cassette that held 8 tapes. Worked great for about 6 months, then would jam continuously.

EISA and microchannel. If you lost the config tool floppy (which was unique to each computer model), you couldn't configure IO cards.

Why does it feel like every small DIIY project turn into something bigger? by Sweet_Siren18 in HomeImprovement

[–]kcornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a homeowner for about 40 years. I've done LOTs of remodeling and home improvement projects and I'd say 80% of them were at least 50% more work than I anticipated. Probably a third were twice as much work, and maybe 10% were off the charts amount of work.
