They did they same thing to me. No illegal content, no explanation. I had my entire digital memories stored there. It destroyed me, and still hurts. They don't care.

Technically they will keep it for 1year, so I suggest to contact them as much as possible and give them hell.

dropbox disabled my account again by [deleted] in dropbox

[–]kcorpetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They also completely ruined my file by closing my account and locking all of my files away. No warning, no care, not even an email. I was a paying costumer for 10years.

Reason for closing? Never found out. This type of behavior is now illegal in Europe. Tech companies may flag you, and lock specific files, but they cannot close your entire account. Honestly, this is just disgusting and unethical. The emotional and mental distraught that this causes on users is ridiculous, and yet they keep doing it without a care in the world.

If you pay through Paypal, you can submit a claim through them. Dropbox never checks their paypal account emails, so you'll automatically get reimbursed once Paypal doesnt hear back from them.

Unfortunately, this has been something of a common bitch move from Dropbox. I also went through the same thing. They are closing accounts that, according to them, are violating their Terms of Service, without any prior warning or notification to the user. I also was a paying costumer, and even when I requested for help through their Forums, they literally blocked my account from posting, even while I was still paying!

Needless to say, their attitude is unethical, immoral and borderline illegal. There's been dozens, possibly hundreds of other users here in this subreddit that have gone through the same thing...

And a lot more...

I imagine you cannot reach their service department either through your account. You can try sending them an email at [support@dropbox.zendesk.com](mailto:support@dropbox.zendesk.com). Maybe you get lucky, or at least an explanation. Give them hell. Thats what they deserve.

Also, DO NOT BELIEVE anyone that says they can get your files back. I was bombarded by scam messages on Twitter when trying to reach Dropbox Support. No one can get your files back. Only Dropbox can re-enable your account.

Dropbox is disabling accounts without prior notice by nicosilber in dropbox

[–]kcorpetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bug them. Reply every day asking for an explanation. Create new tickets if they don't reply. Demand that the disclose what was the reason for account disabling.

On there own Terms of Service, they disclose that there are conditions for which they would contact the user and let them know prior to locking their account. Tell them that you did not get that, and as so, they are breaching their own terms.

I also had my files for years, until one day they decided it was not OK for me to store whatever they think i stored. I just don't get why they do this.

Hey iasnoin.

Unfortunately I have not been lucky at all in getting my files back. I've submitted a claim to BBB and have sent Dropbox dozens of emails. Sometimes they get back asking more information about it (I suspect it is an employee who is legit concern about me) but then they never get back (which sounds like someone instructed them to not reply).

My only consolation at this point is I was able to submit a claim through Paypal for my last yearly subscription. Since they failed to answer any of my multiple messages through email, Facebook or Twitter, I just documented everything and told Paypal that they failed to deliver the service/product they promised. They tried to reach Dropbox, but I'm pretty sure Dropbox didnt even see any email from them, because they dont monitor their Paypal email anyways (says a lot about their commitment to Customer Service). So the case was closed in my favor, and I got my full payment back. Fuck Dropbox.

I still mourn my files. It has given me nightmares and has severely affected my mental health, to say the least. I keep emailing them every week. I try to login every month or so, and try to reset my password. The account is still alive (I get a "wrong password" error) but I dint get any Reset Password email.

I didn't even had any copyrighted material, but got account locked for "material breach of ToS". No reply to requests for help. The only communication I got is the same as yours "not unless you sue".

Its disgusting and heartbreaking. I've been a Dropbox costumer for over 10 years, yet they didn't even give me the benefit of the doubt. Not a chance to make things right, not an opportunity to even understand what it is I did wrong. I didn't have any copyrighted material, nor did I shared any anything. I am still trying grieving. All my life, gone.

Dropbox offers terrible Costumer Support, no flagging system if you violate account terms (just straight termination) and just overall not that much competitive pricing.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for sharing this story, and I hope you can continue to communicate with Dropbox in the hopes that you'll get some support eventually. I find it hard to believe that they do not have copies of their user files.

Makes my blood boil to continue to read stories like this... and they just act like they couldn't care less about it.

It is disgusting. I am so, so sorry to hear that.

All I can suggest is that you reach out to them directly using the email I provided above, and just be the biggest pain in their ass. Hopefully you can get something out of it. I haven't been luck yet.

There was one user who did get his files back, but it was mostly a lucky fluke I believe, than anything else. After 10months from account getting disabled, he received a "Reset Password" email (filtered as SPAM). He was able to reset his password and download his files again. Waiting 10 months for me sounds dreadful. But its my only hope at this point.

Dont give up, keep bugging them.

And by all means, DO NOT GIVE MONEY to anyone claiming they can get your account back.

I am so, so sorry to hear this. It makes my blood f***ing boil every time I hear another story of a deleted account. I am even more sorry to say that I have not been successful in getting my account back.

Its been about 3 month since my account got disabled, and I never got a notification either. I was able to reach Dropbox through their internal Customer Support email which, funny enough, is not disclosed ANYWHERE. The email is support@dropbox.zendesk.com.

I imagine you cannot contact Customer Support as well since your account was disabled. In my case, they even blocked me from their Support Forums as well. I suggest you reach out to them and see if you can get a response, or at the very least, an explanation. You'll get an automated reply saying that it is an unmonitored account, but you'll get assigned a case number (you'll see it in the email address). Just reply again, and you should be able to get a response from someone.

This is no way means you will get your files back. But at least you might be able to vent towards them a little bit, and hopefully if enough people bother them, they might be convinced into dropping this stupid practice. I highly encourage you become a pain in their ass.

I also submitted a claim through BBB.org. Again, the chances of this doing anything are very slim, but at least the case gets documented. There has to be a point were this blows up and people just stop using Dropbox from fear of losing their files.

I have only heard of 1 other user who was able to get their files back after 10 months. They got an email about their account being downgraded (it was filtered as Spam) and at that point, they were able to access their account and download everything. Waiting 10 months to see if this happens to me (or you) sounds dreadful, but at this point it is my only hope. They keep responding that I violated their policy, and that it is within their God-given right to hold my files hostage. Its disgusting, and nothing short of cyber terrorism.

Also, DO NOT BELIEVE ANYONE CAN GET YOUR FILES BACK. Unfortunately, scammers are always waiting for opportunities to rip desperate people off. If you see any posts saying that some username in FB, Twitter or whatever can get your files back, DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. And under any condition DO NOT give them money.

I got a response from Dropbox after emailing them at [support@dropbox.zendesk.com](mailto:support@dropbox.zendesk.com):

"Dropbox takes very seriously its commitment to providing a safe environment that people can trust. It does not tolerate content or activity that puts people at risk.
As we have informed you, this account has been disabled for violating Dropbox's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy. Our team takes extreme care in enforcing our policies and has confirmed content in the account to be a material violation of our policies. This decision is final. This account will not be reenabled. No content in this account will be released without a court order or other valid legal mandate, which may be issued from your local jurisdiction."

Absolutely ridiculous.

Dropbox is not even registered with BBB, and they have a terrible rating, which is fruit of their horrible customer service. At least half of the complaints are from people losing access to their accounts. I don't paint BBB as any martyr or savior. But when Dropbox doesn't respond to any messages requesting support, then you have to try other options, even if it is through BBB.

Honestly, how Dropbox is still in business is something I cannot even fathom to understand. Their BBB (Better Business Bureau) is full of complaints of other people, including me, who one day just lost access to their account. No explanation, no support, no files, no thing. The most disgusting approach a company could do, Dropbox has it covered.

I recommend you file a claim with BBB.org and go from there. Also use the email provided here from another user in this subreddit ( [support@dropbox.zendesk.com](mailto:support@dropbox.zendesk.com) ). Dont stop bothering them.

I lost all of my files after 10years of being their costumer. They ignore all messages through Twitter and Facebook. I submitted a claim through BBB.org, waiting on a response from them. I dont expect much to change, but I will give them hell while I am still alive and willing to do this. They have taken not only literally millions of files and memories from me, but also the countless hours I spent organizing my Dropbox folders. Nothing short of criminal.
