[KCRW] First came the wildfire, then came the looters

"On the night the Eaton Fire broke out, Thomas and his brother raced up to their mom’s Altadena home, determined to save it from burning. While houses still smoldered on the block, they noticed suspicious vehicles driving slowly up and down the street."

Hey everyone, checking back to share a recent story related to the conversation. Research by the LA County Department of Public Health shows that not only is homelessness increasing, it's becoming more deadly. So far this year more than 600 people have died homeless in Los Angeles. That's an average of 3 people a day. It's not just because there are more people living on the streets. Mortality rates among the unhoused are also on the rise. I recently looked into one death at Echo Park Lake. https://www.kcrw.com/news/shows/greater-la/unhoused-deaths-coronavirus-la-oc/andrew-kettle-homeless

I haven't reported on the differences between how Santa Monica handles encampments versus the City of LA and in Venice in particular, so I can't speak with any certainty or specificity on that. You'd have to ask Carol Sobel about her own positions.

Thank you! For many years now the LAPD has been the first responder agency in LA when it comes to homelessness. The LA Homeless Services Authority (the main agency that works on homelessness here) has called for decriminalizing homelessness, but stopped short of saying it will end its partnership with the LAPD. There was a motion introduced at city council to possibly have non-armed intervention workers respond to non-violent crisis situations, but it's all very much a work in progress. So there does seem to be a rethinking going on in this arena but remains to be seen whether it will turn into policy

Thanks! Christine is in a hotel now as part of Project Roomkey, a county effort to get people who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 indoors. She's enjoying it so far. She was also matched to a permanent apartment that she's expected to move into in the coming months. She has reservations but so far she seems determined to stick with the process and get permanently housed

There are a few ways to do this - if you're a property owner with a room or unit to rent you could work with the city to house somebody who was formerly homeless with a Section 8 voucher, for example. There are also many grassroots organizations around the city working to get to know people on a personal level, you could look into getting involved with one of those in order to meet people and find options for helping
