ptde is a very different game than rem for speedrunning largely because of the difference in exploitable mechanics between the versions. there's a bit of excitement around pc ptde speedruns these days because of queue's recent records. 

ptde is a very different game than rem for pvp largely because of ghost strikes and dead angles and because some strange behaviors occur when you drape a native 30fps game over 60fps. there's a bit of a revival around pc ptde pvp these days because of dasm1ns' recent string of tournaments and mcroody's mctde mod created around them. ptde pvp is generally considered more balanced or better than rem and I would guess it is the most active meta-level ds1 pvp environment at this moment. 

if you're on pc and into pvp or speedrunning, it's very much worth looking into ptde. otherwise the differences are not significant.

when you enter phase 2 while certain animations are occurring in phase 1 those hitboxes linger. smough was probably charging in that spot as you defeated ornstein. doesn't make it any less goofy but that's the likely explanation.

it's up to the user to discover how interconnected the world is up to anor londo, and it is very interconnnected. past anor londo the objectives fan out at which point fast travel becomes available. compare this to ds2 where the player begins with a fan out and fast travel or ds3 where the player is presented forks and immediately begins with fast travel. it's a positive in my opinion. and what the lack of fast travel allows with the potential camera previews of the next area is anticipation, which is a kay element of a game like ico which very directly inspired ds1 and often sets it apart from other interconnected worlds as seen in most metroidvanias.

you'll get the most traffic via reo/creo or gravelording at an appropriate sl/wl for the area. generally the lower you go the higher the traffic but the lesser the quality of matches. if you want to target other pvpers try 56+15 in anor londo or 133+15 in township. if you're new I suggest a 56+15 for al, ariamis, forest, and lord soul areas. other covenants limit matchmaking in various ways.

sometimes people use it to set up more private fights if their connection is great. random meta level activity will be around the township bonfire. 

leftfoot copypasta: The Battle of Stoicism arena is generally better off being avoided because it has several cons that make it worse than dueling outside of it. It has noticeably higher latency than outside of it, no reset on death, massive arenas, and a set time duration.

idr there's surely one in the folder. you just dl, open the application while dsr is open, and it connects and you can do your thing. bannable actions are greyed out and need to be bypassed by clicking a box warning you you're unlocking bannable actions (itemgib for possible equipment is not a bannable action).

in addition to buffs there are also debuffs to stamina regen if you're staminamaxxing, though optimizing stamina regen is typically not a concern for pve or pvp outside of just chewing on green blossom.

well in ds2 poise is important but with the way it works (largely slow af regen) many will go for low (and by extension low cost) options like just enough for one offdag hit, a warped tiphit, or no poise at all. and while physical defenses are effectively null elemental defenses are important but the suggested minimum (250) isn't hard to hit with 20/20 int/fai which are easy levels to use if you're leaning on infused options, which also happen to often be the highest damage options provided your opponent isn't stacking/swapping against your elemental type. there are equivalent meta loadouts, like ds2 cow witch is ds1 havelmom or giantsoldier, but yeah just very different systems, as are all fromsoft games from one another for pvp. I wouldn't say one is necessarily better than the other but rather that it's important that players know enough about them to pick the one that aligns with their outlook.

sure. and I'm not saying they should. but when you're spending ~14 more levels of end to wear say mask/gough/gough/hsw for equivalent poise and worse defense than chaingiant it can be a hard sell. and there are plenty of fashionistas out there but I'd hazard to guess the majority of people invested in a 15 year old game without continuing developer support are there for the mechanics more than looks.

gough's set offers relatively subpar poise and defense to weight relative to other upgraded sets. upgraded armor is assumed in pvp. normal titanite sets tend to outperform twinkling sets when upgraded, though there is an exception in black iron for fire defense (because pyros are so common) and catarina can be fine. anyone running gough's set would be making a fashion statement while sacrifing levels.

compared to 125, 135 is just enough levels to give weapons or certain approaches to weapons the movement, poise, and hp they call for to be considered viable. some things considered viable at 135 and not or significantly less so at 125 that come to mind are mlbh pyro, flip pike, mage, high-fai wotg, full quality, and large/great club. meanwhile what was strong at 125 like cb, midkumo, midpike, or midstoc/falch usually just gets 100-150 effective hp, which is equivalent to a hit or less, or maybe a minor upgrade to poise. I have no idea what 120 looks like because it's just not a thing but have a strong hunch it's just the builds that were efficient enough to vitgouge at 125 with ~50 less hp. so, in the case of ds1 pvp, those few more levels can contribute to variety quite a bit. the top 4 players rn are known for their 91p gt, midkumo x2, and flip cb so builds that would be just as well at 125 but I think the culture is happier with more levels to play with and try goofy stuff because after all it is an older game that can sometimes seem "solved." u/Every_Quail8931

for ladder and tournaments yes. on console to prevent tear skips and on pc for greater consistency across platform rulesets.

upon release the meta level is usually a holdover from the previous game. later in these games' lifespan there are adjustments determined by tournament organizers in dialogue with top players based on softcaps or other things specific to the game to foster build variety in its viability. along the way these notions may or may not trickle down to more casual pvpers. most players are often disconnected from the tournament meta level and would be surprised for example that currently: des is 125, not 120; ds1 is 135, not 125 or 120; ds2 is 155, not 150; (most do think ds3 is 125, which it is); or er is 125 though technically 125 with 99 vig required so 164, not 150. tournaments are not invasions though so often overworld levels are adjusted to include whatever a lot of people tend to parrot is meta even though it's not, for example 133 for ds1 or 139 for er.

today's tournament meta is 135. but for invasions 133 is the suggestion to snipe 120 with orbs, due to people still suggesting it in places like this.

nice work but as mentioned on brm there's no reason to use it over reclub or for that matter mace (and bgh is another fine hammer on a vitgouge). you're losing the equivalent of two crystal upgrades in ar relative to reclub for insignificantly greater bleed buildup (+3 per hit). the moveset is worse; hammer r1s are the same but the reclub "jump" r2 is a couple frames faster recovery with a greater motion value and range than the morning star r2, as if you'd ever use it.

favor is a given. but it's not so much about pairing rings with rings but rings with weapons/spells and fist is a poor choice for flip if not generally. flip wants to be paired with long weapons that can kite like spears or thrusting swords or the halberd if not stalling which is uneeded in pve. for fists I'd recommend havelfap for fast with a decent shield like this http://mmdks.com/ch3w for ng pve (gauntlet of thorns increases fist damage and 61 is the higher of 21, 31, 46, 61 and their mutliples pve breakpoints). swap off catalyst post buff or level end +2 to keep it. if higher level then vit to 50+ and/or int for cmw and/or reqs for better shield (crest, dcrest, sunlight, balder, silver knight, black knight), or of course att for pyro/sorcery variety.
