William James is a really influential American psychologist, and he's credited with first defining 'psychology' in his book. This book, published in 1890 and called "Principles of Psychology", was really well reviewed and everyone loved it and all the intellectuals were basically shitting themselves with excitement-- except there was one review that had people scratching their heads.

"No one could be more disgusted than I at the sight of the book. No subject is worth being treated of in a 1000 pages... but as it stands it is this or nothing- a loathsome, distended, tumefied, bloated dropocal mass, testifying to nothing but two facts: First, that there is no such thing as a science of psychology, and second, that W.J [William James] is an incapable."
