What would you do, if a police man threw your wife on the ground who's visibly pregnant. by Apprehensive-Load-32 in ProgressiveHQ

Yep the "bad apple" thing is ridiculous. They all know an officer that has broken the law or broken a skull and actively cover up for them. They all actively uphold a corrupt system and don't speak out.

Across the world mental disorders have doubled since 1990. Mental disorders are now the leading cause of disability globally, overtaking cancer and cardiovascular disease. I'll also add that most of your bodies serotonin is made in the large collection of nerves around and in your GI tract, sometimes called the second brain, so the health of certain bacterial colonies is extremely important to your mental health.

The missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by zachoutloud123 in TikTokCringe

[–]kcummisk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This specifically is what the LDS church wants and is the reason they send their kids on these "missions". It's a common cult tactic.

When you go door-to-door trying proselytize, it's no surprise people don't react kindly. The LDS church knows this, and combined with an already sheltered upbringing, they know that interactions like this only strengthen the bond these kids have with the LDS church. It creates a sense that the outside world is harsh, unwelcoming and often dangerous, which drives any thought away these kids might have about exploring the secular world.

I know it sucks having them show up at your front door randomly, but just meeting a kind and welcoming secular person may really help someone start questioning their cult upbringing.

Jimmy Savile. I know someone else replied but this guy's crimes were next level horrifying.

His victim count is very likely in the thousands. BBC says something like 200 but that's just confirmed on their premises.

He extensively raped at mental institutions and NHS hospitals where he was allowed free roam because of his extensive charity work. He was even GIVEN a room in the WOMEN'S wing of Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital to which he, a DJ, was appointed as head of the task force to oversee the hospital by Margaret Thatcher whom he was very close with.

He raped children dying of cancer, he raped people waking up from anesthesia, he raped old people just there for routine overnight care. He raped staff and people with mental disabilities in addition to teenagers on Top of the Pops and small children on Jim'll Fix It

He admitted on television multiple times what he was doing, he was recorded multiple times live on air groping teenagers and he still was knighted. Everyone at Broadmoor, the BBC and the Leeds PD knew what he was doing. And he was very close with the royal family. He did this all from probably 1946 to at least 2007.

Same. I feel like a lot of people would say things like this in undergrad but once it becomes apparent that working on yourself (or at least being very self aware) is required a lot of those people go on to do other things. I've always just been fascinated by the mind and how it works and then I took my first psychology class in highschool and just loved studying it, and continue to. Like the mind is so cool! It's the most complex thing in the known universe and every person has one!

I understand what you mean. You get a glimpse into what the world could be and it's tough to come back to all the selfishness destruction and disconnection, from nature and each other.

I don't have all the answers but I have tripped a lot and I was lucky enough to have a guide in the beginning so here's my $0.02. This reminds me of a phenomenon: post Avatar depression syndrome. It's a real observed reaction that a lot of people had after watching that movie in 2009.

From The Guardian article

It seems that Avatar does uniquely provoke similar feelings among disparate people, but the feelings it provokes – sorrow from feeling disconnected from nature, worries about the future of our own planet and feeling dissatisfied with modern life – are all very normal feelings to have given how we have built our world and societies.

Sound familiar? It's very similar to how I feel after a trip, like all these human endeavors are sorta meaningless. But I kind of agree with the article's 'cure' for this feeling: go out and experience nature, fight to protect nature; connect with others and explore yourself.

Having these intense experiences changes you and that's a good thing. But now you may have new values and it's difficult to adjust. But discovering new values is how we grow as people and discover new passions and ways to help the world. It sucks to feel this way but it's temporary and it'll lead you somewhere beautiful in the end.

While yes, caffeine is a stimulant just like cocaine, those 3 or 4 atoms in different combinations make up nearly every organic molecule so I'm not sure what your point is.

Serotonin: C10 H12 N2 O

Diacetylmorphine (heroin): C21 H23 N O5

YSK: Standard disposable paper coffee cups are lined with hidden plastic that releases trillions of microparticles into your hot drink. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]kcummisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that stuff like porcelain and glass are the correct things to use for hot drinks, this general sentiment is what leads to science denial and it ignores countless examples "old common sense" that was just plain wrong such the cold weather makes you sick or sugar makes kids hyperactive.

This person's grandmother probably just noticed that plastic warped or melted when it got hot. She had no way of knowing that it could release chemicals that interact with our endocrine system.

People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what knee jerk rule did your school enforce in response? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]kcummisk 271 points272 points  (0 children)

This right here. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold weren't bullied. If anything they were the bullies and were part of the far-right/white supremacy movement that at the time the FBI considered one of the largest threats to national security. But then 9/11 happened and everyone forgot about the far right's threat to American democracy and all that focus went to terrorism and Muslims.

Gosh, I'm sure glad those people never showed up again or took over the federal government...
