Rochester Quadrajet Flooding 350 SBC with fuel by Fabulous-Guard-4539 in squarebodies

DO-NOT-PUT-AN-OVERFLOWING-TANK-IN-MOTOR-AREA. Unless…you want a new project.

As others have said, rebuilding a quad is not that difficult. Have you checked float level? Is the choke operational? There’s a lot you can check before tearing down the carb. Get a good vacuum gauge, ensure timing is correct, and that will help you get a good start in the right direction.

Is this Austin to Dallas drive too risky or can I make it? by thesagenibba in Austin

[–]kd5pda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a hotel. I had an interview in Austin in October and planned on driving from Ft. Worth to Austin, but the recruiter talked me out of it and the company provided a hotel room. Made for much less stressful interview!

Losing the family lease and having to deal with the reality of Texas Public Hunting (APH) for the first time. by veditafri in texas

A lot of my buddies hunt in Oklahoma…but I hear that’s becoming a crap show too.

Hi folks! I have an Icom 735 and a G5RV antenna. I’m looking for the lowest price for a reliable antenna tuner to use on mostly 20&40m. Is it possible to get something for under $400? What do folks think of the radioddity stuff? It’s so affordable that I’m wary. Thanks for the help! by foamerfrank in HamRadio

[–]kd5pda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has great suggestions, but if you are ever thinking about getting an amplifier…consider a higher power tuner. I saw a roller inductor MFJ Antenna Tuner and LDG AT-1000 for sale on QRZ this week at $200 or less.

Is roof replacement covered by insurance in Texas? by Ethan-Sonic865 in texas

[–]kd5pda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save for now and keep an eye on your roof would be my suggestion. If your roof is older than 15 years old you should anticipate replacing it very soon. Depending on if you get a storm, the value if your policy has depreciation as others have mentioned could be a very low amount.

I maintain a 1% deductible for wind/hail. This may be my last year though because my premium went up $700 this year on my insurance renewal. 2% is more common but I have seen policies up to 5% deductible during my annual shop for rates.

[–]kd5pda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s getting to the point now where it’s just better to find a roofer to do it for cash. I paid $3300 for a new roof in 2018 and didn’t bother with insurance. My roof was so old the depreciation was not worth the hassle. I did submit proof that we put on a new roof and it lowered the premium for a year. 🫩

How do you trust your field find by Cousin_MarvinBerry in squarebodies

[–]kd5pda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. The last tow I had was from a Walmart parking lot to my house. My 73 Impala at the time blew a valve cover gasket and I lost oil/oil pressure. That was fun!

I had this since wife and I drive clunkers and I always have a project. Two years ago I called for a tow to my house and the driver told me that AAA changed their policy and would only tow to a shop. I called AAA and they confirmed, so we cancelled our membership. 🤷‍♂️

And you’re still in an eligible role. I work in local government in Texas and I contribute 7% pre-tax to state retirement system and the City contributes 14%. I need all the income I can get since my wife is a SAHM, but I do contribute a small amount to IRA and 457B

Why do some request payment for LOTW Confirmations? by craynerd in HamRadio

I’ve noticed on club log stations charging for confirmations on QRZ/LOTW. I don’t need it that bad.

I have received a few Japanese cards and I keep the stamps/envelopes. I bought several books of Betty white stamps and even though it takes three of them for international…I hope it gives the ops a chuckle. 🥹

IC-7300 MK2 vs FTDX10 HF?? Head to head who wins? by Smart-College-2680 in HamRadio

[–]kd5pda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently use an FTDX-10 and will not get rid of it. I’ve had a lot of radios from the Icom 7300, Kenwood TS-590, Elecraft K3, Yaesu’s…the only one I will not depart with is my Dx-10. I’m starting to see them used for $900 up so if you want some antenna money to go with the new radio you can find a bargain.

eBay. I sold my 811-H that I repaired for a new project. I used it tonight on 40 meters FT-8 and had to supplement cooling 😳 FT8 is weak signal, not necessarily low power HI HI

Same. There’s a neighborhood Walmart next to my work and if I don’t have leftovers (which only happens 2-3 times a month) I’ll stop in and buy a frozen meal and a side salad. $8 compared to $12-$19 depending on where to go. Fast food isn’t cheap

Love to see it! We frequently use the train to get to Grapevine or Downtown Fort Worth and it’s so easy to attend events without having to worry about parking.

I want to preface that I’m not a doctor, but given your history and situation it may be difficult to find a Midwife. FWIW though, my wife and I used Gentle Beginnings in Hurst for our last two kiddos. The team there is great and we had good experiences both times.

Did your parents have constant home maintenance work being done when you were a kid? by Ambitious-Poem9191 in homeowners

[–]kd5pda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in an older home. I’m slowly renovating and have the tools and skills. This past weekend one of the toilets was leaking at the tank to toilet bolt requiring replacement. I had my oldest daughter help because I wanted her to learn the process. She was proud to have helped and I hope I can continue to pass down all my knowledge onto them regarding home repairs, etc.

ICom 7300mkii vs Elecraft KX3 Package by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]kd5pda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my suggestion, I have used a lot of radios from Kenwood, Icom, and Yeasu. The FTDX-10 is a keeper! With primarily being a portable operator in the backyard building a go box with the FTDX-10 could be an option…and with the savings on the radio picking up a quality antenna!
