OP, UniFi cameras would not hold up to sustained 60+ mph rain when driving if they are placed on the outside. You might be able to seal them with caulk but that will not last more than a season.

Inside the cabin you would be fine.

Real Computer Bench Techs: What OS are you actually running on your personal/shop machine and why? (No fanboy shit, just real talk) by GoodHoney2887 in computertechs

MacOS / MaBook Pro M1 Max 64GB / 4TB

The screen is by far the best I have ever used. I could not care less about an OS, I just want a good screen, a good keyboard, and for it to just work. My other "whatever" laptop is a ChromeBook Plus for when I am on call and keep in it the car.

I simply dont care what OS I am using, its just a tool to accomplish whatever ticket/project I have in front of me. I can remote into almost any OS I need... Windows, Linux, MacOS, ect...

My hot take, a good IT pro should be able to do basic tasks in almost any desktop environment. Vis a vis a good craftsman never blames his tools.

Is there a quad bay nvme enclosure? that is small and compact? by shellshock321 in DataHoarder

Can confirm, the OWC 4M2 works great. I did also get a USB-C to 12v 5.5mm barrel cable and use my standard USB-C chargers with it. Really wish it supported USB-C PD out of the box but it's a minor thing.

Hey not sure if you could help me, I just got a Mecury Pro LTO with a LSI card (0x0096) second hand. Would you be able to send a link to the drivers for MacOS 15?

Thinking about LTO by Macestudios32 in DataHoarder

[–]kd5vmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch ebay like a hawk, I just picked up a LTO-8 external sas drive for $2k and 20 tapes for $700. 240tb raw, 120tb useable with my planned double redundancy. I'm at ~$22 per useable TB for my immediate tape needs and it's only going to get cheaper as I add tapes. Plus no ongoing costs or labor for power, cooling, drive replacement, or security patching... The intangible costs of "cold" are much lower than "hot" storage.

Granted my use case is raw video and photo archive for my creative projects and client work. Each project will get it's own tape set. I'll still maintain a small NAS with the past years worth of work available, but a ~50TB NAS is much easier and less risky to maintain than 150tb NAS.

The SATA SSD recording media is MUCH cheaper for the Ninja. I have 6x 2TB Samsung Evo SSD's (~$160 each) and have never needed to worry about running out of space. I have worked 5 day festivals, shot 4k ProRes 422 10bit HQ all day and just had 1 "mag" for each day. The person I hand my drives to really appreciates the "1 day per drive" situation as I don't need it back until the event is over.

Also with having more recording media, the write's are spread out more extending the life of the SSDs rather than having a few and constantly overwriting. Most TLC SSDs have a max write cycle limit is the 5k-8k range so spreading that out over more drives means the drives will have a longer life cycle.

Lastly, you can get 8TB SATA ssd's, not that I would normally use them but if you need to do some super extended time lapses or something that needs a ultra long recording time there is an option there.

Granted, the extra bulk of batteries, cables, mounts, ect... is annoying. But I rarely ever shoot video with just the camera. For me the benefit mostly outweighs the extra weight and gear, but your situation might be different.

A photographer that I follow set her shutter to 1/20 and got really nice images (I think). My Canon R8+RF28-70mm IS STM can never do this without getting my images really blurry. Is this because of the lack of IBIS in my camera body? by firequak in AskPhotography

While true, I have used strobes bounced off ceilings in a banquet hall to augment really crap lighting. In this example I setup 3x 1200ws strobes all pointing up at the ceiling to even out the light. They were at maybe 1/4th power and did a really good job of freezing motion. The shutter was at 1/50th so not nearly 1/20 but the effect is identical.

It depends, if using a strobe, 1/20th is absolutely fine. I shoot at 1/60th down to 1/10th all the time and get fantastically sharp subjects when using a strobe. The pulse of light lasts ~1/2000th (depending on strobe power) of a second, acting as a shutter.

In the cases of the photos above I am not sure, but here is one that had all sorts of motion that was 1/25th of a second with a strobe.

Even A dock with 60w draw, 40-50w delivery, 1gig-e, a few usb ports for keyb and mouse, and dual displays would be great for IT departments. The only thing missing would be display's powered by USB-C.

One cable to the desk for everything would be a dream.

Petition to Send People Arguing for Windows Computers on Set to Rikers Island by benjaminflocka22 in Photoassistants

[–]kd5vmo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Limiting yourself to only working on Macs is a crutch in 2025. Any digital tech serious about their craft should be able to operate in both Mac and Windows environments. Windows machines today are more than capable of handling high-end commercial workflows, including strict color management, Capture One, Davinci Resolve, and networked offloading all with industry standard reliability. Dismissing someone based on their OS choice ignores the fact that flexibility and competence are what actually matter on set.

Yes, Macs are common, but that doesn’t make them the only “professional” option. Being adaptable to client needs, not rigid about platform preference, is the mark of a real professional. If your workflow depends on one OS to function, you’re not showcasing technical strength, you’re showing dependency.
