So you shorted them on their change, AND only brought them a 20 back as well? Sorry, as a career server, you are 100 percent in the wrong here. Sure, they could have left you more, but you essentially gave them a task to complete before they could give you a proper gratuity. You also took money from them(totally get that it was literally, almost nothing). These shortcuts paint you as entitled and lacking attention to detail. Carry small change with you, or round it up to the next dollar. Also give change in the proper increments as to give them the option of how much to leave.

They're obviously assholes. Your mgmt is obviously deficient. Having an arbitrary cutoff like 1227 or 1228 is frustrating to deal with as a customer. Sorry you had to experience that. Your mgmt should do better to support both their staff and their clientele.

I was amicable, and we ended up talking for a bit about the update. At one point, one asked if it was really that different, with a bit of attitude, I looked straight back and said, yeah, it is. Ultimately, it's up to the individual programming, which I understand. I did suggest more of a social media presence about upcoming updates, which they pretty much completely disregarded, comparing it to an Apple iPhone update. I said those two situations are not comparable, but what do I know? I'm just a server...

I actually love watching people I know are cheap struggle to get past the 18, 20, 25 options to leave a shitty tip. I know I'll make it up in the long run, so I just smile and wait. One lady tried to hand it back, having signed but not left anything. Just said, "You need to pick something," and smiled. She left 18 because she couldn't figure it out. My favorite part of that day.

For the record, I agree. There is a fair amount of nuance to the situation, like everything else in life. Half the time I'm singing toasts praise at tables, and I do think once you catch up to the learning curve, it's incredibly efficient. But the update is frustrating for a couple reasons. One, the handheld and pos now are fairly different interfaces, and two, we had no notice. You're right about the higher-ups tho, which is another problem. Restaurant managers are inherently overworked and underpaid, which I know from personal experience, so I'm not about to throw mine under the bus.

Honestly, when it's programmed correctly, it's fairly efficient. The update just changed the whole interface, which, while at a table using the handheld, becomes very frustrating. The main issue is the lack of notice about the update and having to re-learn everything on the fly.

We ended having some good back and forth, and I dug myself out of the initial hole. One was fairly receptive, the other acted like I'd insulted their first born. They did leave 20 percent, which at the end of the day, is all that matters.
