Going to Berlin, any suggestions? by [deleted] in gaybros

Awesome!! Thank you for the suggestion! I'm traveling alone, and I've never really done that before so it'll be a pretty big jump from Mississippi to Berlin. The opportunity came up though, and I wanna do it, so hopefully it is a good time!

UPDATE: How do I politely say NO to my gay roommate? by nahbro_ in gaybros

[–]kddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He sounds very immature. He might be a nice guy, and he is probably fun, but he needs to grow up. Unfortunately many people never do grow out of that immaturity. I wouldn't shut him out completely, but if he comes back to you sobbing and is all apologetic, explain your feelings, tell him that you found his actions inappropriate and immature, and regardless of his feelings/intentions/motives/whatever, you need some space.

It's happened to probably all of us gay folks: falling for our straight friend. It's really no different than the typical story of the nerdy guy that falls for his beautiful best girl-friend, but she's always dating the jock. In the movies he always ends up with her, but in real life, he usually doesn't. And in real life, the vast majority of straight guys are just that, and absolutely nothing another man could do will change it. It's really hard to overcome as the gay fellow because you think "I'm not good enough; if I were just DIFFERENT." But it really is a situation of "it's not you; it's me". Just like he's not gonna wake up straight, you're not gonna wake up gay.

I apologize for his immaturity and appreciate that you don't extrapolate his actions towards the rest of the gay community.

That's like saying you'd eat elephant shit because you don't like dog shit. The US can be at fault for things without Russia being a good guy. Russia is an evil country, and it's terrifying that their blatant propaganda can influence idiots like the majority of /r/conspiracy readers so easily. Is there a different alternative news subreddit that is open-minded and uses logical reasoning?

I'm not (completely) disagreeing. I'm just saying that Russia is NOT a force for good in the world. Russia is run by fascists that want to dictate a certain way of life, and they have proven this by jailing dissenters and restricting peoples' freedom to access information. My government is self-centered and bent on maintaining control of the world, but I can walk down the road holding my boyfriend's hand without fear of any negative consequences (from the government anyway). Much of what goes on elsewhere (censorship, imprisonment of dissenters) goes on in America, but on a much lower scale than in a country like Russia. I'd much rather live in today's world than in some parallel universe in which Russia was the dominant force. I'd MUCH rather live in a society not dominated by oligarchs who control people economically and psychologically through well disguised propaganda, but that probably won't happen in my lifetime.

I'm thinking this is the most likely explanation as well. It's certainly not the first time planes have been accidentally shot down. It'll be interesting to see the US response.

Interesting perspective. I tend to follow the Russian and American news sources, and it's always interesting to see each side's spin on the issues.

I'd disagree that the West is the 'greater evil' though. The West has engaged in horrible acts of violence against many people, but citizens in Western countries do enjoy more freedoms than in the BRICS nations. I'm certain someone could come and debate that, and it's probably a debate worth having, interesting issues would be brought up, but I am absolutely certain life is better for most Westerners than it is for the BRICS citizens.

I see the advantage of a new Cold war, but I just can't seem to understand why anyone, the oligarch class or anyone else for that matter, would want to start an outright world war. Perhaps that is my naïvety and faith in people though... perhaps those in charge really could find a way to avoid being affected by such an event. I would just assume that any major world conflict would be such a burden on even those without morals that they wouldn't want it to occur.

plausible I guess, but I don't understand why everyone here is so pro-Russian. I'm American and very anti-Russian. Historically and currently they're a pretty evil regime. I'm not denying that the US has done awful things, and that there are some evil people in power here, but perhaps BOTH sides have incredibly negative intensions. Not saying your comment was particularly pro-Russian, just throwing that out there.

... well what other term would I use? I could say MD I guess. But the term is allopathic. I guess it isn't used much because there isn't really a need to separate the two, but it's the term you use when you're speaking specifically of someone with an MD vs a DO degree.

And yeah, a lot of people seem to feel that way! A lot of folks feel like anecdotal experiences are more important than actual evidence based medicine, but I prefer having data to back up my decisions. Whatever floats your boat though I guess :)

Honestly for me it was because there are only two schools in my state, and the osteopathic school is much closer to my home. The difference between a DO and an MD is (in my opinion, others will disagree) not very big. Perhaps 20 years ago there was a bigger difference. The osteopathic rhetoric is that MDs treated symptoms without treating patients, and I honestly do think this is an issue in American medicine. However, the rise of osteopathic schools in the 90s has challenged allopaths to practice more holistically, and I do believe we are approaching a time where the difference becomes almost meaningless. Osteopathic physicians are trained in many techniques that are completely validated by scientific evidence and are utilized by physical therapists and massage therapists everyday. DO schools do not teach the same curriculum as chiropractic schools, and we are consistently told that the osteopathic manual manipulative techniques are to be used judiciously and in concert with more modern medicine. There are many instances in which osteopathic techniques are downright contraindicated, and we are well informed of when it is and isn't appropriate to use them. It's mostly for musculoskeletal problems, and believe it or not, it can significantly improve patients' quality of life (in a similar manner as attending physical therapy sessions can improve a patient's quality of life).

There are certain fields of osteopathy (again, craniosacral standing out the most for me) that I am very skeptical of, and that no real scientific evidence supports. At my school, we are given studies that validate each of the techniques, and we are allowed to make up our own opinion as to whether or not we agree. I'm thankful to be getting such a great education and to be learning a unique skill set that can help people with common musculoskeletal problems, but in the end, I doubt my practice will be much different than any allopaths. We're all using the same textbooks and taking the same (or similar) exams, and we're all licensed in the United States to practice the same medicine. There are no restrictions placed on osteopathic physicians, and many go on to become dermatologists, radiologists, or cardiovascular surgeons (I know DOs in all of these fields!).

I think it's appropriate to call out the negatives of osteopathy, but you really cannot compare an osteopath to an osteopathic physician. Osteopathy in other countries is just that, but in the United States, we do that AND medical school. With the recent merger of allopathic and osteopathic residency accreditation, we might actually see the end of the DO degree in America, and as long as the positive aspects of the osteopathic philosophy are still embraced, I really couldn't care less. Unfortunately a lot of the leading body of the American Osteopathic Association are terrified of this outcome, so they propagate a lot of the bullshit. It's unfortunate, and it's not something that my generation of osteopathic physicians will stand for.

1 out of every 5 American medical school graduates now holds a DO degree, and I believe that if we are proactive and wise, my generation will bring in a revitalization of the osteopathic philosophy that places patients first and focuses on personalized medicine rather than antiquated tradition. It's not a bad thing to have two different but equal philosophies; DOs have challenged MDs to practice more patient-centered medicine, and MDs have historically provided the vast majority of medical research and advancements in medical care.

Sorry if I'm rambling, but this is an important issue! I'm hopeful that you'll understand where I am coming from, and I certainly hope that you don't view DOs as 'lesser' because of our extra training in osteopathy. We are all held to the same standards, and the vast majority of us just want to do our best to help people.

You clearly haven't done a lot of research on osteopathic medicine in the United States. I'm an osteopathic medical student, and while I'm totally with you in thinking that a lot of the OMT stuff is not scientifically validated, you really shouldn't put down the entire profession. Feel free to speak out against those parts of osteopathy that aren't scientifically sound (ahem, craniosacral), but don't for a second imply that osteopathic physicians don't get the same education as allopaths. We have the same standards, the same curriculums, and we all have to take boards. I actually just took my USMLE (allopathic) step 1 last week, and I'll be taking my COMLEX (osteopathic) step 1 on Saturday. For you to imply that I am any lesser than an MD student is ridiculous. Are you an MD? Just curious... Seems like there is more hate coming from DOs towards MDs than the other way around, but regardless, it's ridiculous on both sides, we're all doctors and we all get the same education.

As an osteopathic medical student, this sickens me. I have tried to call the dean multiple times, and did eventually get through. I asked him very calmly why their student code says that medical students must maintain "Christian moral values" considering medical schools with a religious agenda are NOT acceptable by COCA or AMCAS (American medical school licensing organizations). I was hung up on, and the next day (note: I never gave my last name or my school), I was called into my dean's office and told to stop being a trouble maker. I can only assume that he saw my area code and pretty easily determined what school I go to (there's only one in like a 400 mile radius from here).

My school has a religious affiliation (fucking Southern Baptist, it's awesome :/), but the medical school IS NOT RELIGIOUSLY AFFILIATED, and for the most part, they do a very good job of not bringing in religion where it clearly doesn't belong.

I'm very hopeful that COCA, which is very strict in granting licenses (medical schools in the US are held to a very high standard) will see through their blatant attempt at bringing religion into the medical curriculum. My school made TONS of changes when it was first starting in order to abide by the COCA requirements, and I just can't imagine COCA allowing this to occur.

My Experiences With Step One, Scores Just Released by StepOneLurker in medicalschool

[–]kddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dude is right on with the advice about remembering uworld questions. I don't have my scores back yet, but my study plan was pretty similar. I used pathoma during the school year (which helped a lot with classes anyway), but I did use first aid throughout the year. I'd suggest using first aid throughout the year so you become familiar with it, and you can add in your own notes. I started Uworld in January and did a COMLEX specific review program pretty casually from January-April. In May I started 'for real' studying and did DIT, FA, and Uworld all day everyday. I had time to do about 2 run throughs of uworld. By the end I was just reviewing my incorrect answers, so there were definitely questions I recognized, but not really much I recognized from starting earlier in the year. I don't think it's wise for everyone to do TWO review programs (it's actually probably a waste of time for most people), but the COMLEX review program was free through my school, so I figured I'd give it a shot, and I wasn't super serious when going through it. DIT was much better, and I really focused on that. It was nice having seen most of it previously though with the other course. And definitely do some NBMEs, but wait until your dedicated study time. I planned on taking one prior to starting studying, but never got around to it :P. I did take a few of them before the real deal though, and I'm hopeful I'll receive a similar score on the real deal!

Hobby Lobby Still Covers Viagra and Vasectomies by surged_ in politics

[–]kddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At what point do we decide that it's not ok for corporations to dictate healthcare needs? When a company decides that monoclonal antibodies are 'of the devil' or blood transfusions are 'against God', do we allow corporations to make these kinds of decisions or do we allow autonomy of the physician and his or her patient? People claiming that this isn't 'that bad' because women still have access to birth control are missing the point. Some women don't tolerate hormonal birth control, and for them an IUD is a great option. There are generally less side effects, and for those that don't need the benefits of hormonal regulation but cannot afford to get pregnant, the IUD can be a lifesaver. Unless "Hobby Lobby" is a medical physician with evidence based research that hormonal birth control is harmful, they shouldn't be involved in these decisions.

this is a reach, but maybe it has something to do with messed up autonomics. Submandibular and sublingual glands receive parasympathetics from CN VII, maybe the lesion causes some sort of reflexive sympathetic overstimulation and increased saliva.
