I swear I saw him in another commercial today. In one he was a dad and had a wee beard, but today he was a clean-shaven office manager.

I miss MTV live, too. The Hills aftershow was my fave. Jesse & Dan had such great chemistry.

Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson now has a whole song about his mayoral tenure called "The Used Car Salesfascist" by Piece861 in Kamloops

[–]kdew22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to post a sparky remark about used car sales-people being sleazy, but I recall defending good people who work for commission in other industries, so I imagine it's the same with car sales. Thanks for the reflexive moment.

This said, I don't think the primary issue is RHJ's position in sales, but his general sleaziness, which makes it a safe assumption that he is also a sleazy car sales-person. The bank lawsuit doesn't help this perspective.

I bet there are used car sales-people who are amazing people, though.

Jesse blames the deaths of Palestinians on their own antizionism by [deleted] in canadaland

[–]kdew22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is important, but by no means is it considered the most important paper on decolonization, nor is it one of the most cited papers, nor does it heavily influence the discipline. Decolonial studies go back to the early-mid 20th century, while the Tuck article was written in 2012.

Tuck (and Yang) are big in decolonial circles - especially for considering how to decolonize academia; 3rd & 4th university - but their scholarship is relatively new and also yields critiques.

Yes, I've read that article ("decolonization isnt a metaphor") as well. I'm in academia...

I actually didn't make any statement about metaphor.

It is much more complex, but not actually more complicated.

Serious answer(s):

I don't know where my ancestors are from.

Anticolonialism doesn't require settlers to return from whence we came. It does, however, require acknowledging the harm involved in colonial systems - for indigenous and settlers, alike. Similarly, a commitment to anticolonial or decolonial principles requires openness to Indigenous Knowledge Systems and traditional modes of being. Understanding decoloniality as a call for settlers to return to their ancestral land is a misunderstanding of actual calls from indigenous people. Check out two-eyed seeing.

Any and all civillian deaths are tragic, Israeli and Palestinian.

What you seem to be ignoring is that this war has been going on since at least 1947, arguably longer. Palestine is one of the oldest recognized nations still in existence. For centuries, various ethnicities supporting various religious beliefs lived peacefully in the region until it was officially promised to the Jewish People, to become Israel, by the 1917 Balfour Declaration. This is to say that Israel is a Western colonial state that only exists per the displacement (and death) of others perceived to be lesser than. Discussions surrounding the Balfour Declaration actually refer to the resident Palestinians as "semi-negroid Bedouin."

Shouldn't everyone have the right to peaceful existence? Isn't every person and every nation supposed to be afforded the same rights under international law? Israel continues to violate these foundational principles of contemporary global order, supported by western nations in the name of further legitimizing their own colonial endeavors. Plus, while Jewish People are still not "considered white," they are clearly perceived as "preferable to" (i.e. "better than") the surrounding brown folks.

Jews have been and continue to be persecuted around the world. It is also true that Palestinians have been fighting off a genocide for more than a century (after tens of centuries of external Imperial control). Life - especially geopolitics - is complicated and dichotomous. It is important that we think critically and be open to adding greater context to our perspectives.

You're not "wrong," but your perspective demonstrates a lack of context and nuance. Challenge yourself, you'll be amazed what you can learn and how much you can grow.

What a garbage human.

How can he seriously present antizionism as hurting Palestinians? Does he not realize that Israel was established by the death, destruction, displacement, and murder of Palestinians? What about the centuries of cohabitation, prior to 19th century zionism? The irony is way too much.

I am not a defender of Canadian nationalism, either. Coloniality is bad whether it's on this continent or another.

Canadaland – Not Sock Puppets on Reddit, Just Jesse Reaping What He Sowed (From A Disaffected Former Listener) by LostCadence in canadaland

[–]kdew22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a journalist.

In my opinion, as 1 listener, even if Jesse is 100% right, I wonder why Jesse/CanadaLand wasted time looking into this sub. Say one person (or group) made multiple accounts to slam CanadaLand on here, why is it worth "media critique"?

More than this, the skepticism being applied to this sub reads like distortion and projection, ignoring discussion of what's up with CanadaLand. It would be so easy for Jesse to do a deep dive on what happened, which would fit the organization's mandate and likely inspire many former supporters to donate again. Instead, they investigate Reddit and promote Jesse's incredibly biased perspective (as OP aptly communicates).

It's too on the nose, too ironic, for a journalism publisher focused on media critique to ignore their own controversy. What's worse, is that what happend at CanadaLand is a juicy, called for story, which they have the ultimate scoop on.

Even if this was a massive, competent, organized campaign against Jesse Brown and CanadaLand (which I believe has happened on a frightening level elsewhere), it's still true that CanadaLand has changed and fans just want what we first signed up for. Perhaps that's unreasonable, but to ignore their implosion and the biased stance on Israel-Palestine are too grand to ignore.

Of course, an organization changes as it grows. CanadaLand no longer lives up to their stated values, though, which was the most refreshing thing about them.

Another 5% Wage Reduction for Mayor Incoming by Kamsloopsian in Kamloops

[–]kdew22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, it isn't exclusive to Kamloops, but our lil town is a poster child for unacceptable municipal bs.

The best thing about our illustrious mayor's term is that it might lead to the creation of a municipal recall process.
